Two old men are sitting on either side of the gate of the front yard, and another is in the room. A sign with information about rental apartments is leaning against a pillar on the front gate, on which is a small sign that reads, ‘’If you look for a flat or a room for rent, come in please.‘’

The woman giving the massage was the owner of foot bath store No. 237, and the woman being massaged was the owner of hardware and building materials store No. 239 next door. They seemed to be playing a joke, laughing while massaging. The black dog lay in front of them, indifferent.

The restaurant behind the old men has a very funny name: Huachi Rice Noodles. The word " huachi " literally means a person who is obsessed with flowers, which is probably why flowers are used to decorate the front of the restaurant. However, the more well-known meaning of "huachi" in Chinese is a nymphomaniac, so maybe that's what the restaurant is trying to convey?

While enjoying a bike ride along the Shark Valley Loop in Everglades National Park, I came across this Great Blue Heron in a nearby freshwater slough. The view extends to the southeast and zoomed in with a NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR to have the heron fill the image with some background sawgrasses and water. I captured several images with this bird, with this sideway look and pose being a favorite.

This was originally a residential compound built in the 1920s or 1930s. Four or five years ago, it was requisitioned about and the residents and shops were all relocated. Then the street frontages were replaced with concrete blocks. However, until now, these empty buildings have not been demolished, so perhaps the urban renewal programme here is in trouble. Recently, poorly executed military recruitment murals have been painted on the concrete block walls, making a comical sight along with the passers-by.

Finding a young woman, making her wear a beautiful dress, telling her to pose at famous attractions when it's fine and windy, and taking photos of her is one of the hobbies of some old Chinese men in their retirement years.

I spotted the bird while hiking on the rocks, and tried to go closer to it without alarming it. Somehow the bird sensed my presence and as luck would have it moved perfectly to this crevice. The crevice framed the bird as it had a sideway glance.

Lagopus mutus; ptarmigan's are common birds on Iceland. They are a major food source for predators like the gyrfalcon and, the winter visitor, the snowy owl. In many regions they are also hunted by men and there they are quite shy. Where they are not hunted, like on the island of Hrisey near Akureyri or nature parks like Skaftefell, they are much more tame. The males moult 4 times a year where the female moults 3 times a year. During winter they are all white except for a black tail end and black eye line. During summer they have reddish-grey top parts. During winter and spring they have characteristic large red eye combs which become reduced after the mating season. They are residential ground dwelling birds which can be found in all vegetated lands (scrubs etc.). Ptarmigan's feed on berries, buds, germinating seeds and insects when available. Different regional subspecies are recognized in Europe, and Greenland.*

This bear claw emerging from the wall was extremely popular in 2021, often surrounded and hidden by crowds of people. However, in recent years, it has become much quieter. So much so that these two ladies sat beneath it without even noticing it—until I took a photo of them and the claw above them.

This is an interesting café called HINICHIJOU (Beyond the Everyday)—for more details, see the ChatGPT-translated English version of the Chinese Wikipedia article below.

_____________

Bear Claw Coffee HINICHIJOU is a coffee chain in the People's Republic of China, staffed primarily by employees with disabilities. The name "HINICHIJOU" comes from Japanese, meaning "Beyond the Everyday" in English.

History

The first store was located on Yongkang Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai. It began trial operations on November 15, 2020, and officially opened on December 3—the International Day of Persons with Disabilities that year. The café does not have a traditional storefront; instead, a hole is carved into a concrete wall. Staff members wear bear claw-like gloves and pass the prepared coffee and a rose to customers through the hole. Each cup of coffee is priced at 20 yuan, and customers place orders by scanning a QR code.

The store manager, Yingying (Employee No. 1), and staff member Weiwei are both hearing-impaired and certified baristas. Yingying even won first place in the coffee brewing category at the 6th National Vocational Skills Competition for People with Disabilities. Customers with a disability certificate are eligible to receive one free coffee per day. However, the employee handing over the bear claw is a non-disabled person.

This service method was chosen because most of the baristas are deaf or mute, making verbal communication difficult. Many of them experience anxiety when interacting with people. The café also operates a coffee plantation in Yunnan, where they employ deaf workers. One of the co-founders, Wang Haiqing, stated that the purpose of establishing the café was to provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

On November 30, 2021, the first Bear Claw Coffee without a wall opened in Meilong Town Plaza. On December 3, 2021, another store was launched at Crystal Plaza in the Jing’an Temple area, also without the "bear claw through a hole" concept, operating like a regular coffee shop. As of December 2021, Bear Claw Coffee had opened ten branches in cities such as Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou, with more than 60% of frontline employees being deaf baristas.

In July 2022, Bear Claw Coffee opened a new store, where a visually impaired individual took on the role of both store manager and barista. On July 16, 2022, Meituan collaborated with Bear Claw Coffee to open another branch at China Resources Times Square in Pudong New Area, Shanghai.

Imitations

On September 11, 2021, a café in Osaka, Japan, opened with a design inspired by Bear Claw Coffee. This café also features a concrete storefront with a hole for passing coffee. The founder of the Japanese café acknowledged that the idea was indeed inspired by Bear Claw Coffee in Shanghai, and their goal was to provide job opportunities for people with social anxiety.

The original shop's relocation address is written on the wall that seals the shop.

Built in the 1920s, this residential compound has very basic facilities, and the property owners have been looking forward to this day for a long time. But for the tenants of the shops along the street, who have no say in the matter, they will have to look for another shop, which is obviously not a good situation.

The work displayed here is the right-hand half of a pair of hanging scrolls.

White and red peonies stretch diagonally out from the middle left section of the composition.

The swallowtail butterfly and two cabbage butterflies are depicted realistically owing to the influence of nineteenth-century treatises on natural history and encyclopedias.

However, the movements of the butterflies are based on standards found in painting manuals.

The work displayed here is the left half of a pair of hanging scrolls.

It illustrates wisteria, butterflies, moths, and a cicada.

The white and yellow patterns on the body of the robust cicada perched in a tree and the wings of the tiger swallowtail butterfly are true to life.

The downward and sideway motions of moths as they fly are skillfully depicted.
