At a trendy, social-media-famous ice cream shop, a family of three on a trip to Shanghai orders two cups—one for the mother and one for the child. The father was not originally meant to have any. After a few bites, the child loses interest and chooses a drink instead. The father then takes the unfinished ice cream from the child and eats it, as if carrying out a task that still needs to be completed. Visiting internet-trendy ice cream or coffee shops, taking photos, and sharing them online has become a routine part of travel. The child, however, has yet to understand this intention. From my perspective, it seems that the idea to stop at this shop came from the young mother, while the father simply ensures the plan is carried through.

Fortunately, there’s a café along the street that opens early. One of the staff members is fond of the Samoyed and invites the old man to sit on the street-side bench outside the café. He gently pets the dog while the old man takes the chance to enjoy his morning smoke.

This narrow street lies in the oldest part of the former French Concession, once known as the French Bund (South Bund). In the distance, two towering landmarks of Lujiazui—the Shanghai Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC)—rise across the Huangpu River. Along this stretch, the street is lined with low-end eateries. Farther ahead, the blocks once housed leather wholesale shops, which have already been acquired and cleared. Now, the acquisition of this section has begun as well. Many eateries have already relocated, and the rest will soon follow. The shop buildings are likely to be demolished entirely.

His “workshop” is just a messy yard behind an iron gate. There’s a sign on the left gatepost, but most of it’s hidden by a tree. He was watching a video on his phone, and when he looked up and saw me taking pictures of him and his place, he still had the smile from the video on his face.

This photo was taken in the autumn of 2020. After this, all the buildings along the street where the restaurant was located were requisitioned and sealed off.

Established in 2016, this shop has designed its frontage in an old-fashioned style, even a bit Hong Kong style, with a signboard calling itself " Gu Qing Ji Mountain Goods Company of Li You Cai Food Factory", and in English, Gu Qing Ji Nam Pak Goods, since 1925: flic.kr/p/2pMFD8T

The delivery platform lets some of its deliverers dip a pair of kangaroo ears on their helmets, as the company's mascot is the kangaroo. However the public generally think of them as rabbit ears.

An elderly woman sits by the gate of a residential compound, waiting for nearby residents to bring her recyclables or calling on them to collect larger or bulk items. Her husband is likely riding around the neighborhood on a tricycle, looking for more scrap to pick up.

M. Yunnan Rd., Shanghai

This was originally a residential compound built in the 1920s or 1930s. Four or five years ago, it was requisitioned about and the residents and shops were all relocated. Then the street frontages were replaced with concrete blocks. However, until now, these empty buildings have not been demolished, so perhaps the urban renewal programme here is in trouble. Recently, poorly executed military recruitment murals have been painted on the concrete block walls, making comical sights along with the passers-by.

I have taken many photos of the neighborhoods in this area (www.flickr.com/photos/runenliu/albums/72177720309821973/). It used to be a historic district. However, it was demolished in 2021 and is now a construction site.

The background of the photo of these three girls is the facade of three European-style model buildings along the street that are still under construction. The buildings occupy only one street corner, with the construction site behind them, and the buildings themselves are empty.

Many people use photography as a means to distort reality. It seems that these three girls might be from some small towns, and they are very fond of this European-style street corner building—after all, just like the other pretentious upscale areas in this city that have already been built, they can use these fake buildings to capture fake beauty.
