Via Santo Stefano, 20, Piazza Armerina

Piazza Armerina is a beautiful mountain town, best known for the mosaics of the nearby Villa Romana del Casale. Yet the town is unbelievably desolate. Most of the shops are shuttered, and many houses bear signs offering them for sale at low prices. Hotels and B&Bs have largely ceased operation, and on any given day, there are no more than two or three restaurants in the entire town serving full meals. The streets are almost empty—cars still pass by, but pedestrians are rare.

An elderly Dutch lady also noticed this strange phenomenon and said she had no idea why it was happening. I discovered that many of the now-closed B&Bs and restaurants were still operating as recently as 2023. In other words, this astonishing decline has taken place only within the past couple of years. I wish someone could tell me what happened here.

Beyond that, all I can do is seize every opportunity to photograph the few interesting people I come across.

112 Wenmiao Rd., Shanghai

On a nearly deserted street near Wenmiao (Confucius Temple) in Shanghai’s old town, two photographers sit in front of a walled-off noodle shop, quietly enjoying cold drinks. The drinks were bought from a small beverage store behind the photographer—one of the last still open on the street. Reportedly operated by the local subdistrict office, the shop was allowed to continue operating until the very day demolition began. It set up plastic chairs and a table across the road, under a sunshade improvised with a paint bucket and an umbrella, offering a place of rest for passersby and photo enthusiasts.

The wall behind the two figures was once the storefront of a neighborhood noodle shop, now bricked up due to demolition. Yet traces of the shop’s past remain: hand-written messages from the owner listing the new location, and a warm invitation—“欢迎来吃!” (“Welcome to eat!”)—along with an English “welcome” scrawled in casual letters.

In contrast, a warning sign posted by the demolition authority reads: “Urban Renewal Site. Safety First. Unauthorized Entry Prohibited.” It underscores the irreversible process underway.

To the right, the street sign for Caoshilong is clearly visible, marking the entrance to a narrow alley now sealed by construction barriers.

In the early morning, a sanitation worker from out of Shanghai sits on the sidewalk, leaning against a fire hydrant, taking a break to video chat with family members far away.

The bigger space on the left is for vegetables while the small space on the right is the owner's aquatic processing room, in which she processes yellow eels, snappers and frogs.

I love this lovely bird. I think it has an understated beauty. I am glad when I see it flitting about trying to get fed from the bird feeder. I note it doesn’t partake at them but on the ground underneath them.
