Learned the unfortunate-for-the-creature way that these shells were in fact occupied.

This shell really drew my attention. It can also be seen here and here. The shell is sitting on a small sand dune, sort of hovering 1 or 2cm above the beach. The wind can create very special things....

Drove the loop Santa Barbara - Ojai - Carrizo Plain - Morro Bay - Santa Barbara yesterday. Certainly no "superbloom" at Carrizo Plain this year - the condition is best be described as "no bloom at all". Shell Creek Road was the only notable display of wildflowers we encountered.
