In childlike glee, I always remove my socks and shoes at a beach

Walking barefoot hurt

Tip-toeing brought forth a litany of curses

So like an ascetic and his bed of nails

We lay down, basking in the remnant warmth

Left by the sun on baked bleached shells

Staring at the blue sky

Deciphering patterns from the cotton wisps of clouds

Pure idle throwback the years bliss

Stopped in at Shell Beach for some capturing of images...

Playa Conchal (Shell Beach) - Shane walking on water?

The beach is mostly crushed shells smoothed by the years of constant wave action washing up the beach and back into the ocean.

Though not apparent from this photo, the beach is made entirely from millions of cochina shells. The beach is on the way to Monkey Mia, and the whole area is covered in shells to a depth of up to 3 metres. It was amazing to see.

Visited in April 1992. (also in July 1993)

This is scanned from the original slide.

Billions of tiny white 'coquina bivalve' sea shells form Shell Beach. The coquina bivalve shellfish has no predator in this locality. The shell fish have existed in huge numbers for thousands of years, then died natural deaths then been washed ashore. Shell Beach is covered for a 60km-long stretch to a depth of some seven to ten metres. Shell Beach is one of only two shell beaches like it in the world.

Shell Beach är 3km lång och snäckorna går 10m djupt.

Brown Pelicans, Pelecanus occidentalis, Pismo Beach, CA. I post these pictures, not because they are particularly good, but because of the large influx of Brown Pelicans they depict. This is possibly related to nesting failures in Baja California, with the birds coming north looking for food.

At 110km long, Shell Beach is one of only two beaches in the world made completely out of shells.

The shells on this beach are all the small cockle species Fragum erugatum.

The beach forms a sustainable resource as the shells concrete together and are cut out in blocks and used as a naturally insolating building material.

friend and fellow local artist, marni mutrux. i had no idea she was involved in art in the park, but it was nice to see a familiar face just a few booths away.

Shell Beach's most prominent older cliff top home, the old Chapman house, as it looked in the year 1979.
