Better known as the Short Brothers, British pioneers of powered flight who built their first planes at Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey, with one of the first orders coming from Charles Rolls of Rolls Royce fame. In February 1909,Shorts started construction of a new workshop on unobstructed marshland at Leysdown, near Shellbeach on the Isle of Sheppey. This had been acquired by the Aero Club for use as a flying ground, together with Mussell Manor (now known as "Muswell Manor"), which became its clubhouse. Construction of an initial batch of six aircraft was started immediately. Short Brothers so becoming the first aircraft manufacturing company in the world to undertake volume production of an aircraft design. The company expanded, opening another factory in Riochester, Kent, where the famous Shorts Flying Boats were built.
Production gradually moved to Belfast where the company still manufactures aircraft, but it is now under the ownership of Bombardier.

We enjoyed our last Motorcycle ride down the coast so much we took another week and did it again.
Shell Beach is located just north of Pismo Beach. The rocks are home to a multitude of seabirds and provide an interesting vista. I will have to make it back there under some better light conditions.
Misty day colors of bluff, house and tidal rock pattern got my attention on a drive through Shell Beach.
Taken 1-16-2009 at the opening of the "Ebb & Flow" exhibit at the Huntington Beach Art Center. The exhibit celebrates the City's centennial with historical artifacts, photos, documents, etc.
Brown Pelicans, Pelecanus occidentalis, Pismo Beach, CA. I post these pictures, not because they are particularly good, but because of the large influx of Brown Pelicans they depict. This is possibly related to nesting failures in Baja California, with the birds coming north looking for food.
With a 4:30am wake up call, we chugged up Cave Landing road in Avila Beach. We hiked out to the rocky point and posted up with our gear. After watching the warm sun wake up sleepy Shell Beach we cruised down the mountain (tri-pod and all) and found ourselves the perfect low- tide-tide-pools to slip and slide around in. After taking advantage of the negative tide we Splashed our way south to Pismo for some breakfast burritos. It was such a nice way to reconnect with my high school buddy, snap a few sunrise/tidepool/wildflower shots, and learn a few Canon tricks! Thank you Nick!
Not a bird I would be expecting to find on the beach and cliffs but, considering all the flies and small flying insects, I probably should. Certainly one of my favorite little birds, I really enjoy watching these little flycatchers catch flies..#mymothernature #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #bird #Oystercatcher #nanpapix # 7DMarkII #canonusa #treehugger #birdphotography #shellbeach

The winter, when I took this is not really the most popular time of year to go to the beach around here. But, then most people are not crazy photographers. (thank heavens!)
Ya don't get sunsets like this in the summer around here though.
The flowers in the center are Japanese Irises, on the right is
a bird of Paradise.
Peron pensinsula Fence reaching into the waters of Shark Bay, WA.
Project Eden is a conservation project that aims to turn back the tide of extinction and ecological destruction in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area.
For this reason a 'Feral Proof Fence' has been constructed reaching from one end right across the Peron peninsula to the other.
Feral invader species, such as cats, foxes, rabbits and goats are being removed from the peninsula to give the indigenous animals a protected area to rebuild their numbers.
Seen sitting on the fence are mostly Pied cormorants.
This picture is from my visit to Shell Beach located at Shark Bay in Western Australia.
You can read more about my visit to this area at the link.
With fine food from DePalo & Sons in Shell Beach you can make a romantic picnic on the bluffs above the beach.
