After trying various alternatives, I decided to shellac the completed upper deck with a slight golden color added. I didn't cut the shellac with thinner, which led to a somewhat undesireable glossy finish. I tried lightly sanding the glossy finish off, with poor (splotchy) results that can be seen in the photo.
Note that the deck beams in this photo have now been tapered at the ends and they now reflect the curve that the quarterdeck will follow.
