Shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug to form a cocoon, on trees in the forests of India and Thailand, or a minimalist rock trio.
This bike now has a wheelset of its own including my first wheel build on the front. I am trying out a Brooks team pro and installed Berthoud fenders. First ride to work today with the new stuff went well.
I applied a shellac finish to this clock in the Spring of 2006. On July 9, 2009 I sanded the finish with no. 400 wet/dry sandpaper plus mineral oil mounted on a rubber sanding block, then buffed with no. 0000 extra-fine steel wool, followed by Turtlewax white automotive polishing compound, then finally applied Johnson's paste wax. Notice that the finish is much smoother and even than photos taken of the same clock in 2006.
