It was project wrap and shellac day. I shellacked some cork grips for a roommate's bike, and added a couple layers to the Long Haul Trucker. Then I used some white Silva cork bar tape to make grips on the Rudge Sports, then twined it, and applied five layers of shellac. I used Bullseye pre-mixed amber shellac for the job.

SHELLAC RECORD No. 9

LP

1997

Mastered By - John Golden

Bob Weston - Bass

Steve Albini - Guitar

Todd Trainer - Drums

Originally recorded for La La La Human Steps, Montreal (dance troupe). Both sides are instrumental, not counting a shortwave radio collage interlude on side B.

Recorded in Chicago & Angers, 1995

Distributed to the "friends" listed on the front cover, each copy had the recipient's name circled in marker (or written in the box at the bottom) for personalization (and sale deterrence). Just under 800 people are listed on the cover.

In the 1880s, inventor Emile Berliner realized the line of recorded sound wrapping around a wax cylinder could be flattened out into a spiral and mass produced with a stamp. A few years later, Fred Gaisberg discovered an incredibly crisp sound came from records made of powdered slate and shellac (a resin produced by a species of Asian beetle). Nicknamed for their rotation speed, shellac 78s would rule sound recording for the next half-century.
