After having a couple months shooting with the Legendary Canon EF 50mm f/1.0L USM, I decided to look back through my Lightroom catalog and compare it to the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2.
The Nikkor is a really quite good performer with an interesting characteristic. Wide open, there's some noticeable spherical aberration just in front of the focus plane. If you are slightly back-focused, your subjects have a dreamy glow to them. Sharpness wide open is surprisingly good as well, however the 50mm 1.0L is sharper at f/1.2. Contrast is quite good on this lens wide open.
Its real benefit over the 50mm f/1.0L is size and weight, with the downside being that it is manual focus. Getting precise focus at f/1.2 can be tricky, but when you nail focus, it is fantastic.

Uploaded sharper version 5/25/19. The description below is from 2015.
It was yet another winter Columbia Gorge photo trip where the weather steadfastly refused to be anything but steel-gray overcast. But, just as we came down the hill on westbound Rt 14 leaving Stevenson, Washington, we saw a light on the horizon. I found the first river view where I could park the car, and got out the Hasselblad and the 50mm lens. The light was changing fast, so I guessed at exposure, and took two pictures. This is one of them.

Uploaded sharper (but still a bit slightly fuzzy) version 2/20/19.
Previous descriptions I wrote for this photo over the years remarked on why a photo taken with an 8x10 film camera managed to not be sharp when put onto Flickr. I still have that problem to a certain extent. Some pictures show up tack sharp, some are a bit fuzzy. There doesn't seem to be rhyme of reason to which ones turn out sharp. This one, after the third attempt to rescan and re-upload the picture, is still a bit fuzzy. On my computer, it is razor sharp. Go figure.

I haven't felt like posting anything for a while, and have grown increasingly frustrated with my limited opportunities for photography. I have been carrying a little Olympus Mju as a pocketable camera. It is a brilliantly compact design, but suffers from a tendency to under-expose. Judging from comments on-line this seems a common "fault", although I suspect it is deliberate bias, the camera stopping down to ensure "sharper" pictures. This is no great problem but, more troublingly, there are very occasional quirks with the autofocus. I inevitably lost the one picture I was looking forward to, and which should have been very straightforward :)
The lens is incredibly sharp and focuses to 25cm. In sheer resolution it beats many SLR lenses. Everything considered, this is a wonderfully convenient camera, but I far prefer an older, classic look and manual control :)

After we had filled our boots with the Desert Wheatear (a tick for me), we headed back towards the car. We got near to the junction in the path when I spotted a fence post taller than the others. I figured it was worth a look but tripod on my shoulder I asked liz to take a look, she didn't spot the post I was on about at first but a double take confirmed it was a bird. I set the tripod down and looked and to my surprise a kestrel was sat on the post! I was hoping for a merlin but it didn't take a second to realise it was a kestrel. We moved up from about 40-50meters away till we got pretty close, the bird seemed quite relaxed. Spotting a dog walker entering the path I knew it was only seconds before it was going to bolt. This shot is still a big crop perhaps a portrait shot would have gave more pixels on the bird but getting use to the new lens it wasn't a thought of mine at the time. I've cropped to 3.6Mpx and thats with a 2x so Im more than pleased with the quality it's kept. I think the shot could have been sharper too which would have helped further no doubt. I really need a decent head for my tripod. The dof having 600mm and still being able to crop heavy is a real bonus over what I've had before as the backgrounds still remain nice and creamy smooth.
It was a great way to end a wonderful days birding.

It's not my normal subject matter, but this oddly named road on an idilic summer morning may provide some warmth on the chilly days coming up as the fall approaches. so i picked up my new glasses today.
i've never had glasses before, other than sunglasses, so the effect on my brain was startling.
firstly, i felt shorter. a lot shorter. i felt like i was walking on my knees at first. this threw me off quite a bit, especially since it is slippery out.
secondly, things at a distance are much sharper now. i'm not sure i like this, at least not entirely. i like that i can read bus numbers from a few blocks away again, but i don't like how everything seems closer. and uglier. i'm rather surprised at how ugly the world looks when you can see it clearly. a little soft-focus can do wonders.
at any rate, i think they'll take some getting used to.

A friendly crow in St. James's Park this lunchtime was happy to pose for photographs. I love the amount of detail in this shot - the crow allowed me to get really close to it.
Because I used Lightroom on the previous image in this photo stream, I was able to sync the adjustments, making the finishing of this image that much faster.
Sharpening had been done with a brush so I still had to use a brush to sharpen specific areas of this image.
A funny thing about this lens. It's shots, straight from camera, are softer than from other lenses but with sharpening they end up far far sharper than sharpened images from other lenses.
The negative is actually sharper than this scan of it would suggest, nevertheless, best seen larger on black here...
Wikipedia has a useful discussion of the history of Warsaw's 'old town,' as well as a great image (if wide angle lens distortion is your thing) of a similar row of buildings on another side of this market place...
I think the zuikos are sharper, and the 14-54mm being slighly cleaner looking overall than the 25mm pancake.
This was a fairly unscientific experiment. I shot my curtains handheld about 1.5feet away and cropped around the center. These are crops of the JPEG files at 1280x960 straight from the camera.

Uploaded sharper version 2/4/19. I wrote the description below 10 years ago. Interesting to look back on me looking back.
In this, the summer of my 45th year, I have returned briefly to my youth for this image. With my first decent camera, which I still own: a Minolta XG-1, in hand, I trapsed across Europe in the age of Ronald Reagan, and the "Evil Empire." I was a soldier back then. In the precious little time I had to travel, I took one excursion to England. I visited Canterbury and London. This image is supposedly (I say "supposedly" because I never verified it), next door to the Legendary 221B Baker Street, the fictional home of Sherlock Holmes. I had left my tripod in Germany, so I was forced to hand hold the camera for this picture using 400 speed film with a shutter speed of 1/8 of a second.
I was 20 years old when this was taken. I made $500.00 a month, and had an incredible thirst for German Beer, which robbed me of my runner's physique by my mid twenties. I've struggled ever since to stay thin.
On the 25th anniversary of this photo, I would be hard pressed to recognize the me I was back then. My back didn't hurt so much. I had all the time in the world. I still spoke of what I was going to become, or do with my life. I looked a bit girlish. Most of all, I wouldn't recognize my lack of direction. However, what I did have were the beginnings of the passions that would drive me to succeed. I was a budding writer then, an erstwhile poet, and a somewhat inept photographer. My "success" has not derived from pursuit of these passions, but from the drive to do well that I learned from them. This success, however, has enabled me to afford to pursue them on the side. I honed my photography and writing skills slowly over the years, and they would help me find my place in this world--no easy feat for the young man I was then.
Enjoy.

It offers a versatile focal range, very good image quality, a large buffer for continuous Shooting with 8 fps.

This camera is such a joy to use, it's so snappy, it feels great, the large aperture helps a lot, and the fact that it's so light and small allows slower shutter speeds, and the colors are great

The benefit of both the sharpening and NR parts of the new engine is better detail retention at higher ISOs, with an ISO 1600 shot from the G7 X Mark II shot showing as much detail as an ISO 800 shot from the G7 X.

"John's disciples said to Jesus, "Are you 'He who is to come' or do we look for another?" In reply, Jesus said: "Tell John what you hear and see: the blind recover their sight, cripples walk, lepers are cured, and the poor have good news preached to them..." Lk. 3:10 Third Week of Advent
O Jesus, I rejoice at the signs that say you are near. Your power is everywhere if I could see it.
Yet my eyes often see only darkness and what has yet to be done. I believe in you, yet when I look around evil seems so strong and goodness so weak. If you have come, why is there still so much suffering and why do the poor still despair? Where are your miracles today?
Your grace, O Lord, is more fruitful in my world than I imagine. I know your power is everywhere around me, if I could only see it. Show me today where the blind see and cripples walk.
Make my vision sharper than it is."

I have seen ravens plenty of times before but have never been successful in photographing them. I would have liked this one to be sharper in the face but overall for a bird zooming by I don't think it is too bad. Also photographed at Rainbow Curve in RMNP.

Here is a sample image I took using a Canon A640. If you look at "original" size on this, Dan's hair is quite sharp. Compare this against the photo I took of Dan and Emily using the new 40D and you'll see just how soft the 17-55 IS USM image is.
I messed with the contrast very slightly, and bumped the saturation. But NO image sharpening was applied.
At this point, the A640 images are so much sharper than my 40D images that the 17-55 EF-S is headed back to the store to be replaced. Maybe they'll have a better sample of the 17-55? If not, I'll have to see if they have a 17-40 f/4 L or 16-35 f/2.8 L in stock.
