Macro Monday - Sweet spot squared

This was interesting as I quite often use f16 when I want everything in focus but went for f9 in the end for this shot as I felt the point of focus was slightly sharper (if I understand correctly, that was the point of this theme) I felt a bit like I was at the opticians...is it sharper or just closer...I'm never sure there either! ;)

I am slowly catching up after my weekend away. I am going away again in a few days so may not be on Flickr much for the next week, I will try to comment when I can but actually have a very busy few weeks ahead. HMM

A few years ago I shot this same scene with my camera gear at that time; testing out my then new Olympus EM1 mk2, against my trusty old Canon 5D mk3. The net result was that there wasn’t a great deal to choose between them.

Now 6 years on, I thought I would reprise the shoot with my all singing and dancing Canon R5. And….. I still prefer my older images.

Naturally the newer image is cleaner, has more resolution and is a little sharper. But I was a little late setting up, the sun was already coming up and so I was rushing. The lesson is, no matter how good your gear might be, it’s how you use it that counts 😉.

Northern Cardinal - It is a challenge to have the eye on focus in that type of position however, what I find funny is that how one is a bit sharper on the back feathers than the other. I assume it is the angle.

It could be a a tad sharper but it was taken through the glass window of my 7th floor hotel room in Liverpool . It does however give an impression of the size of this extraordinary building . In fact the only way you can get a good shot of Liverpool Cathedral is from some distance away . If you are close it defeats even a super wide lens .

Liverpools Anglican cathedral is the largest cathedral in England and the fifth largest in the world . It is also the most recently built. The cathedral is based on a design by Giles Gilbert Scott, and was constructed between 1904 and 1978. The total external length of the building, including the Lady Chapel, is 207 yards (189 m) making it the longest cathedral in the world. I will post a shot or two of its interior at a later date.

One thing that is remarkable is that there are many photographs of the construction of the building in a museum. Unlike the medieval cathedrals in Europe you can actually see the faces of the builders of this church. It will have kept many Liverpool workers employed during the 74 years of its construction

THANKS FOR YOUR VISITING BUT CAN I ASK YOU NOT TO FAVE AN IMAGE WITHOUT ALSO MAKING A COMMENT. MANY THANKS KEITH. ANYONE MAKING MULTIPLE FAVES WITHOUT COMMENTS WILL SIMPLY BE BLOCKED

Come winter, me somehow go to Carl Zeiss lenses. Planar type.

Carl Zeiss Ultron 50mm f1.8 concave. Modern lenses may be sharper and have better IQ in many aspects (when messured) but Ultron (pretty much all version of the lens, but this one in particular), have this sweet spot of sharpness, micro contrast, cooler colors and decent to quite interesting bokeh.

Gannet back-lit against the cliffs at RSPB Bempton. Glad I got there early - this shot wasn't possible after 9.30 - could be sharper on the eye I admit.

The chessboard shook, the end was near,

The king cried out, “Not here! Not here!”

The queen just smirked, the knights stood tall,

The rook declared, “Off with his all!”

No simple check, no mate so clean,

Instead, they called "Guillotine!"

The blade came down, a final slice,

A sharper end, but oh—so nice.

The pawns looked on, a dreadful sight,

As the monarchy lost one last fight.

These Tree V Fold photographs show trees forming a fantastic figure fashioned from branches and leaves.

The sign with birds in silhouette both open and closed catches the eye and makes for a great positive message as you walk from the Car Park to the Visitor’s Centre. I was very pleased with the single image and also with the joining of images which immediately offered two variants. The two variants were either the original full frame joining forming a Tree V Fold, or a sharper incised cut to make a more precise V Fold at the centre of the pictures.

The Sun and Winter go very well together. Bright and strong the shadow making light built everything, well photographically at least. This is a great place with excellent cafe and visitor’s centre making a superb human reaction to help wildlife. This place is a reserved world of natural wonders nestled in amongst our modern pressures of life and living that often overlook wildlife and the chance to be calmer and closer to the land, water and sky and also to those that never left the cycle of seasonal lifestyle.

Point well taken, getting the point across, I see your point....Points come and go, some points are sharper than others, be gentle and wear a thimble when working your point into the fabric of life. Is it a point or a pike?

A small (2cm) pencil sharpener photographed with a combination of old and new.

The lens is a 56 year old Macro-Takumar 50/4, pre-set, 1:1, extended to its maximum magnification. The shot uses in-camera Pixel Shift – merging four nearly identical photos into one, for more clarity/detail. Minor crop off the pencil to the right, to keep the width of the horizontal plane to less than an inch.

Nikon D7000 Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/85 ZF/2 @1.4

I made this image with the Nikon / Zeiss 1.4/85 @1.4 and another with Sony A7ii / Sony FE 85 1.8 @1.8 that was sharper but chose this one as it has a more aesthetic appearance I think.

Sharper than I thought. A nice alternative to the Leica-branded Summicron.

I was so bored playing small cubes (piece of cake), wanted something challenging so I got my self a bigger cubes. These are 6x6 and 7x7 V-cubes. It was hard to find in US that time so it has to ship from Greece but this days you can find this more on eBay. I must say it’s a really remarkable puzzle for all age. Quality is unbelievable. So far I have solved these puzzles a number of times. I can’t wait for 8 9 10 and 11 to come out, no matter what the price is it’s worth it, I’ll buy it all. Did anybody say I am a nut?

Powerful laser beams leave Unit Telescope 4 at ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Their destination? An upper layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, about 90 kilometres from the ground, rich in sodium atoms.

The colour of the lasers is tuned to excite these atoms, making them shine brightly, like stars. Astronomers then use these artificial stars to calculate the blurring effect that Earth’s turbulent atmosphere creates on the light from astronomical objects. A deformable mirror uses this information to correct this blur in real time with a technique known as adaptive optics, which leads to much sharper observations.

This telescope, also known as Yepun, is the only one at the VLT equipped with a Laser Guide Star Facility. Each beam is 30 centimetres wide and packs 22 watts of power. For safety reasons, the system is equipped with cameras monitoring the part of the sky occupied by the lasers, so that when an airplane flying by is detected approaching this area, the lasers are promptly switched off.

This panorama of my workplace was stiched from two shots taken with the Olympus Zuiko 28mm f2.8 Since it's a manual lens it does not have the 'hot spot' problem. And much sharper than the Eos kit lens too.

Gaia and I took a road trip to central Oregon last week. We were hoping to outrun the cloud cover, and get some pictures. These weren't the fluffy kind of clouds that are good for photography. They were the all-consuming flat cloud cover that wipes out contrast. Well, the clouds won, but we kept going until we found this old homestead.

The building in the center is the original homestead from the 1870s, and on the right is a water pump tower. The owner was gracious enough to let us get up close.

Slightly sharper than last weeks water drop. I used a larger aperture to keep more in focus.

I wish that I had a lens that shoots with a bigger aperture so that I could take sharper low light photos... but whatevs
