The Pyrrhuloxia (pronounced however your mouth decides in the moment) is the desert’s answer to a cardinal—same spiky crest, but with more attitude and less hydration.
I found this one perched on a rare leafy ocotillo, posing like he owned the place. With his candy-corn beak, dusty-red plumage, and permanent side-eye, he’s the bird version of a grumpy old-timer who’s seen things.
He’s tougher than his Northern cousin—built for heat, sand, and yelling at you from a bush for reasons known only to him. His song? Like a cardinal, but sharper, higher, and just a little bit judgmental.
Get the light right, and he glows like a desert ember.
He sings with a sting and glares like a monk—
A feathered grump with desert funk.

I may be wrong but it seems we see more Bald Eagles this time of year. They are here year round yet I sense more come from inland to the coast for easy prey.
**perhaps the white feathers could be sharper if...
The Osprey are still here, yesterday we captured one bathing at my favorite spot.

I've been a bird nerd for many years now, but for the life of me Sharp-Shinned vs. Cooper's still makes me foam at the mouth. From this moment onward I'm creating my own species (we seem to be living in an era of personal reality creating anyway). Which do you prefer, Coopshinned or Sharper's? Joking aside, anyone got any tricks to reliably tell them apart??

An old axe undergoing some blade rehab. Up close even what appears sharp is pretty ragged. As the old saying goes the most dangerous axe is a dull axe.
Some Cooshie-doos from a misty and frosty morning. Judging by the slightly brownish tinge to the wing coverts and the worn state of the primaries, these were birds born last year. Adults would have darer primaries with a sharper white fringe and the coverts would be a purer "dove" grey
Shame this is not sharper but beggars can't be choosers. Apparently it's a ichneumon wasp on the flower and another kind of insect in flight ( I.D. please if anyone knows)
Until I die, live the life of a boss player, cause even when I'm high
Fuck with me and get crossed later, the futures in my eyes
Cause all I want is cash and thangs, A five-double -oh Benz, flauntin flashy rings.
Bitches pursue me like a dream, been known to disappear before your eyes just like a dope fiend
It seems, my main thing was to be major paid the game sharper than a motherfuckin razor blade

Devil Inside
INXS
Here come the woman
With the look in her eye
Raised on leather
With flesh on her mind
Words as weapons
Sharper than knives
Makes you wonder how the other half die
How the other half die
Makes you wonder, wonder, wonder
Here come the man with the look in his eye
Fed on nothing but full of pride
Look at them go, look at them kick
Makes you wonder how the other half live
Devil inside
The devil inside
Every single one of us
The devil inside
Devil inside
Every single one of us
The devil inside
Here come the world
With the look in its eye
Future uncertain but certainly slight
Look at the faces listen to the bells
It's hard to believe we need a place called hell
A place called hell
The devil inside
The devil inside
Every single one of us
The devil inside
Devil inside
The devil inside
Every single one of us
Here comes the woman
With the look in her eye
She's raised on leather
With flesh on her mind
Words are weapons sharper than knives
Makes you wonder how the other half die
Devil inside
The devil inside
Every single one of us
The devil inside
Devil inside
Devil inside
Every single one of us
The devil inside
Devil inside
Devil inside
Every single one of us
The devil inside
Devil inside
Devil inside
Every single one of us
The devil inside
The devil inside
Yeah, yeah, yeah
The devil inside
Yeah, yeah, yeah

For Looking Close... on Friday! Pencil sharper. I have spent the last week moving my home office, making up flat pack furniture and sorting drawers and paperwork. I had no idea I had more than one pencil sharpener.

Nikkor 50mm f1.8 AI + Sony A7 II
This lens was standard with most Nikon cameras in the 1970s. There are no sharper lenses made, and today you can buy these for next to nothing since most people seem to prefer slower, fuzzier zooms. It has less distortion than the f/1.4 version.
It is very, very well made.
It has no distortion, unlike the f/1.4 version.
It is pretty good at f/1.8, much better than the f/1.4 lens is at f/1.4.
By f/2.8 the image quality is just about perfect.
This lens has just about the best performance you can get.

Sharper moon images are out there but photographers working on a budget will be pleased to know that the lens for this shot was purchased on ebay a few years back for less than $50. A 500mm "Five Star" lens that may have other branding. This is a film era long lens not a telephoto, so an awkward 14" long. It does have a tripod mount so that helps and a T mount. It came with a 2x Vivitar tele converter...so 1000mm. This does require manual shooting but I recomend this all the time anyway.
Sharper than a motherfucker

This picture is for the group Happy Caturday and this week the theme is "Catphabet".
"N" is for Noah and Novelty teeth.
Noah is not very impressed by the Fang brothers.... and I can attest that Noah's teeth are a little bit sharper! :)
Neotinea ustulata (burnt orchid, Brandknabenkraut), Antanges, Waadt, Switzerland. My first published orchid picture 2017. This time using a proper macro lens. The difference in sharpness is evident!

Alfie enjoys himself in his basket by the window. Outside the rain is pouring down but he is nice and warm.
If you enlarge this image you'll see the raindrops and my Alfie sharper of course ;-)

I wish this shot had been sharper but I am still fairly pleased with it. It was taken handheld on a boat that was really rocking on the waters below the cliffs of Raasay . We had to cross the Raasay sound to find the birds and what a joy it was to see these magnificent raptors for the first time . Good that they are back in British skies after been extinct for almost a century . It was a good job I was using digital took over 120 shots and only three were usable not a good ratio
The UK’s largest bird of prey, the white-tailed eagle is sometimes known as the 'sea eagle', and preys on fish, mammals and small birds. It was persecuted to extinction in the UK, but reintroduced from Norway during the 1970s. Today, around 150 pairs now nest in Scotland. Both parents tend to the one or two chicks that hatch each year.
A massive and impressive bird of prey, the white-tailed eagle has broader wings than the golden eagle, with which it shares its home. Its wingspan is about eight feet. Adults have a white, wedge-shaped tail and a pale head with a yellow bill. They are more likely to be found near the coast than the golden eagle.

► █░▓ YET ANOTHER of those mythical places in Dalmatia that bear mythical traces of some very real things from the past. The ruins of this medieval tower treasure a rich story and a legend which has been - just as the ruin itself - heavily neglected in the blindly self-centered communist times. The last three decades have obviously brought scarce improvement. Instead of a thorough restoration treatment, or at least some attention by the authorities, the tower has gotten close competition of a pesky cell phone network antenna and its installation.
This is a land where heaven obviously opens up and talks to the ground. And I have witnessed it. More than a year after this visit, it haunts me in my dreams.
Underexposed ⅔ of a stop. Developed from raw in Affinity Photo 1.10.6 applying Haze Removal filter. This filter does work miracles on the more distant objects and details affected by perspective hue, but it also colors grey clouds and grey sky into blue, which is wrong. The clouds here were rather grayish as it rained a lot that day. In-between the rainy periods I caught this site from the local road. The rainbow starting from (or ending at) the top of this remarkable hill bears a popular belief of marking the spot where a treasure has been buried.
Back in the car, just a minute later the impressive rainbow closed the whole circle over sky. But Zečevo hill was already behind us.
-Oddly, the s.o.o.c. jpeg is much sharper but lacks refinement so I chose the raw file for this edit. I refrained from too much sharpening of this raw edit as it gives a cheap effect. The Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 pro kit zoom is consistently sharp with nice colors, reliable performance at all focal lengths, a relief indeed after all other kit zooms I have used. Except for Pana Leica 12-60mm which I have barely used. I do miss 60mm a lot. Also I have now attention for the 75mm angle of view because of the remarkable Oly prime, and I know now I need it much more often than I expected to.

This one is a tiny bit further away than the one I posted yesterday, and its focus is sharper. I'm still not sure which I like best.

I wish this was a sharper image, but I didn't use a tripod. Instead, it was taken through my windshield as Mark was driving down the road. A lot of my pictures are taken from the car window because if Mark had to stop the car every time I wanted to take a picture it would take us forever to get to our destination. I still thought it came out to be a good picture despite having to take it through a dirty windshield and while the car was in motion.
I upgraded to firmware version 1.3 on my Sony A1. Not sure if others have noticed any difference but it has definitely made my 200-600mm more accurate and it appears to be even sharper. Here is an image from Brookwood Marsh taken yesterday. You be the judge.
This Voigtländewr Color-Lanthar lens is removed from Vitoret LR rangefinder camera. I made an adapter from m42 cover and a 18mm helicoid.
I like very much the way it renders colours, even when it looses contrast due to nearby light source. It is quite sharp for Cooke triplet. Closest relative is MOG Trioplan 50mm f2.9. It is sharper than Trioplan and, until now, I did not succeed to produce any meaningful bubbles in background. Bokeh, at least for now, is smooth and pleasing.

In July, 2019, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, a.k.a. PG&E, conducted surveys of the electrical wire system in our region of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The helicopter is a Bell 206L-3 LongRanger III; in this view we can see the devise being used in the survey—a Sharper Shape (the package with a large dongle, at the front of the helicopter).
It could be a a tad sharper but it was taken through the glass window of my 7th floor hotel room in Liverpool . It does however give an impression of the size of this extraordinary building . In fact the only way you can get a good shot of Liverpool Cathedral is from some distance away . If you are close it defeats even a super wide lens .
Liverpools Anglican cathedral is the largest cathedral in England and the fifth largest in the world . It is also the most recently built. The cathedral is based on a design by Giles Gilbert Scott, and was constructed between 1904 and 1978. The total external length of the building, including the Lady Chapel, is 207 yards (189 m) making it the longest cathedral in the world. I will post a shot or two of its interior at a later date.
One thing that is remarkable is that there are many photographs of the construction of the building in a museum. Unlike the medieval cathedrals in Europe you can actually see the faces of the builders of this church. It will have kept many Liverpool workers employed during the 74 years of its construction
