Family : Bignoniaceae
I planted this tree, renowned for its large yellow boquet like flowers, at Raintrees, Diamond Beach a few years ago and it was doing OK, although each year it would face a setback in the dry spring before leafing up again coming into early autumn.
Given that it was surviving here well over 2000km south of its native range in Far North Queensland I thought I had done well to keep it alive.
Just as it was beginning to look good again, in July 2018 a storm caused a a 5 metre section of a nearby Mexican Tree Fern (Schizolobium parahyba) to break off, smashing the Deplanchea tetraphylla off at the ground.
After so much effort to get it to where I had I was of course very despondent after this event.
Nevertheless I took the broken bits and stuck them in a pot of soil and surprisingly they took root pretty quickly and survive to this day in my nursery. The good news is the broken Mexican Tree Fern has resprouted and the adjoining Alloxylon Flammeum (Australian Tree Waratah), also seriously damaged has also bounced back well.
From January 2019 I had been seeking to purchase another advanced tree and was lucky enough to find 2 at Plumtree Pocket Nursery at Burringbar. I was fortunate that a friend was able to transport the 2 advanced trees down to Diamond Beach in late May 2019.
Recently I saw Deplanchea tetraphylla growing well in the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney so I have today bitten the bullet and planted one of the two trees in a hard spot but I've dug a big hole and added good loam and some lime.
I am hoping the winter will not impact the tree too much but keeping the water up to it in spring may be an issue. Well see how I go.

the biggest problem with the fascist television show "the voice", imo, is that it's taking way too long to become a shopping channel.
based on the interactive wii game "karaoke revolution", the voice manufacturers vocal copyists whom they ultimately hope will cross over into the creative range.
they pit style and fashion and sound together to create marketable role models and to sell songs on iTunes. it is one of the first television shows that actually generates an invisible product that millions and millions of people (even billions) can purchase.
however, singing covers is and will always be just karaoke -- or, alternately, kickback royalties in the pocket of a selective songwriter.
and the level of actual "competition" on the show is limited and uninteresting. if you're familiar with the format, you'll know that four global music celebrities choose teams of singers and then winnow through them to find the one voice that they believe will sell songs on iTunes and become the winning favorite for the "american public" (which is of course just a strange slice of freaky people who like watching singing shows at night and waste their personal time using voting systems that allow one user to vote 100 times if they so choose)

but aside from this false sense of "competition", there really is no actual competition on the voice. there is selective choosing, but there is never real competition.
to make this show infinitely better, authentic team competition needs to be interjected.
there needs to be a broader platform that shows off less finished product and more background work with team competition attached -- vocal exercises, genre challenges, rapping, improv, songwriting, etc.
teams need to go up against one another in relays and all sorts of manufactured challenges where they can engage in physical gauntlets instead of just boringly singing someone else's songs time and time again on independent stages with background musicians. glam is cool, but it's not staple. glam should be for the end, not the beginning. and people like the glam to be earned, so building up to it is the trend. create the fashion and you will have a million and one monkeys to sell suits to -- monkeys wanna be a part of the lab experiments!!!! they volunteer in human society.
so game it up!!!!
a point system needs to be developed.
in a point system, team leaders can stand out as decision-makers, not just "coaches". they can be ruthless. they are the captains in reality who coach, but their decision is final and there really is no team.
on the voice, the "team" leader is currently just the person who owns a stable of horses.
they're different creatures in economic terms and value.
they are not equivalents.
it's queen vs pawns, in chess speak.
team leaders can then use those points as a form of economic trade or leveraging -- the ability to take a player from another team by force, not just a "steal" after someone has been rejected (it's not technically a steal in its current form, but rather, a "save". so they need to get their words straight up on the that front). or, using points to save a player who has been eliminated off one's own team -- basically shifting power into select hands is the goal. competition is always based on certain forms of necessary superiority winning out over alternate forms which prove inferior. all this really means is that david can beat goliath if the environment is right -- say, for instance, david brings a gun to a knife fight. or he brings a projectile missile launcher and pulls a roof tap on your home... whatever.
not only would it help the manufacturers of the voice to achieve their goals -- creating a strong buying platform for clothing and shoes and hair products, but also padding the fat fking pockets of rich-ass world-class celebrities and paying kickbacks in royalties for invisible-product sales (electronic files) -- it would make the show more exciting for the viewers AND introduce a gaming element which doesn't exist in the current state.
gaming is huge.
people underestimate the power of gaming.
the entire book of the mahabharata is based on loan-leveraging, gambling and loaded dice -- that is so to say, ALL of indian literary culture explodes from trafficking in human slavery and gambling. so who are we to be any different?!?!?!
the voice could literally create a massive gaming platform that drew the viewer in -- no one just wants to vote for big causes. real voters want to vote whenever they can so that their opinions are heard all the time. real voters are concerned far beyond the realm of ordinary voters. real voters believe their vote matters. just ask any voting american heheheheh. but don't tell them to study anything about their actual vote. that will just upset them. especially in a country where your vote hasn't really mattered for the past thirty years.
but vegas is literally just one step away from this process. how do i know this? because i've turned the voice into a drinking game -- that's how boring i think the end game of the voice gets after all the teams have been established and the competition just turns into long songs sung by people who are not stars and probably never will be.
i mean, come on! they're just good singers.
if they were stars, they'd be judges or showing up to do the "successful musician" guest spots
after all, the fascist construct requires a class heirarchy.

Israel, which has led the world in launching vaccinations and in data gathering, is confronting a surge of COVID-19 cases that officials expect to push hospitals to the brink. Nearly 60% of gravely ill patients are fully vaccinated.

The great fire of 1918 was a terrible setback to many businesses and homeowners in Raetihi. The loss of numerous mills slowed the timber industry but it continued successfully into the 1940′s.
As decades passed, it emerged that the ‘endless’ supply of strong native timber was running out. The choice to replant forests in fast-growing pine was there, but in the middle of the 20th century the ability to treat this new soft wood for outdoor building was not available. Raetihi felt the loss of the timber industry more as each year passed. Farming was an option for some but it would never be as high an employer as the forests once provided.
From the 1970s through to the 1990s, Raetihi fell into a state of depression similar to many rural New Zealand towns. While farming and forestry continue here, it is tourism that provides the next glimmer of hope for this historic town.

DOVER — A new state program is designed to help families and individuals who have experienced foreclosures, job loss, or other financial difficulties stemming from the financial crisis that began in 2008, Governor John Carney and other officials announced this week.
Fresh Start, a partnership between the Delaware State Housing Authority and DHSS’ financial empowerment program, $tand By Me, offers free financial coaching to help Delawareans get past setbacks and move toward home ownership again.
“Home ownership is a fundamental element of our economy and important to ensuring our neighborhoods thrive,” said Governor Carney. “We have to make sure that all Delawareans have an opportunity to succeed, achieve financial stability and strengthen their communities. Through Fresh Start, we are giving people the tools they need to help them work through economic challenges.”
The statewide program, funded by bank settlements, was developed to help Delawareans who lost their homes due to foreclosure, short sale, or deed in lieu arrangements, said DSHA Director Anas Ben Addi. They may wish to improve credit, increase savings, or decrease debt to put them in a better position to buy a home or rent.
“Fresh Start reaches Delawareans who have struggled to recover and get back on the path to financial stability,” Ben Addi said. “Losing your home or job is painful and a significant challenge, but with the right coaching and assistance, we can help Delaware families move forward again.”
$tand By Me, a partnership with the United Way of Delaware, works with nonprofits to offer personal financial coaching, with four coaches statewide devoted to helping Fresh Start clients.
“Our goal is to provide people with the information, resources and support they need to establish and achieve their financial goals,” said $tand By Me Director Mary Dupont. Since it began six years ago, $tand By Me has served more than 75,000 Delawareans, including more than 14,000 who have participated in financial coaching.
Governor Carney and other leaders spoke at an event formally kicking the program off at the Goodwill store at Lea Boulevard in Wilmington. Goodwill is one of three nonprofits with Fresh Start financial coaches, along with NCALL Research and Interfaith Community Housing of Delaware.

True. Aurora is making her comeback now (: She's getting stronger each day, trust me.. When she doesn't want to do something, or doesn't want me to do something, she makes it clear. Take her purple hoop for example. I tried to take it out of her cage because she wasn't using it, but she took it off of me, took the roof off of her house and kept it there. It's true what they say, 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger'. My little princess has proved that to the entire world. I've never met such a brave and trusting creature.
When she had her accident, and she was bleeding a lot, my mum tried to get her out of her cage. Aurora just ran. She didn't want my mum to touch her. So (as embarrassing as it is) when she stopped running away, I started talking to her, and singing to her (she loves to hear singing) she calmed down. I put my hand next to her in the cage and she climbed on it. I was then able to take her out and help her clean herself up. Then the next morning when we took her to the vet, she didn't want to be touched by the vet either, so again (I embarrassed myself in front of all of the vets) I started singing to her to calm her down and the vet could finally pick her up, check her teeth and give her the pain killer that she needed desperately. Then when she was back in my hands she went to sleep peacefully. She woke up only for around 10 minutes for a little bite to eat, and a drink then slept. She was like this for 2-3 days, but now.. she's so much better. Yesterday we took her to the vets so that they could see how well she was doing and so that the vet could check her teeth again, and she gave them all kisses. They said that she was the first hamster that they have ever treated who hasn't bitten them. I'm so proud of Aurora. I couldn't ask for anything better for my birthday (I bought her myself, the present part was that my mum would actually let me keep her in my room :L). I am a very proud mummy <3

An afternoon well spent! Despite little setbacks from my "assistant", such as breaking the p/s pump drive coupling.... we got the new clutch fitted and pushed the new 6LXB home. Bolted up to the gearbox but awaiting some new studs for the front crossmember, so sitting on packers for now.
I need to make up an oil cooler for it, then I can put some oil in and start it up. All progress is good progress :-)
Since I don't want a setback with this sinus infection, I stayed home today--skipping workouts at the gym and at water aerobics. One of Jim's colleagues is from Greece. His wife sent us some Baklava. It was delicious, as usual.
Hmmm a bit of a setback today. Colin had just refitted the expansion vessel on our pressurised hot water tank when he realised there was a leak and then noticed three cracks on the joint from the tank. He's hoping to fix it tomorrow. If the fix doesn't work then it's likely we'll have to buy and install another new tank (this tank has only been in since January).
He also noticed at this point that there's no way of isolating the hot water tank from the rest of the system, meaning that we have no running water at all until it's fixed. Ah.

Unfortunately I had the Serpentine belt and pulley go to shit on me on my car. That cost me $40 bucks and about 2 hours worth of time to fix because I couldn't get the damn bolt loose. That sucks because now Im going to have to push my ordering of the new bridge back a couple of weeks, which will push back the whole project. Oh well patience... However I did pick up a 1-ply white pickguard today for $10 bucks.

Israel, which has led the world in launching vaccinations and in data gathering, is confronting a surge of COVID-19 cases that officials expect to push hospitals to the brink. Nearly 60% of gravely ill patients are fully vaccinated.

CureVac's COVID-19 shot just failed in a large trial, a major setback for the Gates-backed biotech
CureVac's experimental COVID-19 vaccine failed in a pivotal clinical study, the biotech said Wednesday.
It's the first late-stage study to flop, with CureVac's vaccine showing 47% effectiveness.
The German biotech saw its stock price drop by more than 50% in post-market trading.
A COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by the German biotech CureVac failed in a critical late-stage study, the company said Wednesday.
It's the first failure of a major vaccine candidate in a final-stage trial. CureVac said an interim analysis showed the shot was 47% effective, falling short of the study's goals and the minimum bar for what US regulators find approvable.
The development is a setback to the world's immunization efforts, as European officials had previously reached deals to acquire up to 405 million doses of the shot.
Despite the disappointing result, CureVac CEO Franz-Werner Haas said the company plans to go "full speed for the final readout." The trial is still ongoing and the final vaccine efficacy figure may vary as more COVID-19 cases are tallied.
"We are still planning for filing for approval," Haas told The New York Times' Carl Zimmer.
CureVac, which is backed by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, saw its stock price plummet following Wednesday's announcement. Shares were down more than 50% in post-market trading. The foundation owns about 3.1 million shares of CureVac, or 1.7% of the company, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
An independent biostatistics expert said it will be nearly impossible for CureVac's study to still produce success. The 47% estimate of efficacy is based on 134 COVID-19 cases among study participants. "It's not going to change dramatically," Natalie Dean, a University of Florida biostatistician, told The Times.
CureVac blames variants, even as other vaccines hold up against different strains
In a statement, CureVac leaders said that the abundance of virus variants played a role in the result. Only one of the 134 analyzed cases resulted from the original strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the company said.
"While we were hoping for a stronger interim outcome, we recognize that demonstrating high efficacy in this unprecedented broad diversity of variants is challenging," CureVac CEO Franz-Werner Haas said in a statement.
The disappointing result is surprising given some of the similarities CureVac's experimental vaccine candidate had with other, highly effective immunizations. CureVac's shot is a messenger RNA vaccine, a new technology platform that's also used by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech.
Those shots proved to be more than 90% effective in late-stage trials last year. They also appear to protect people against some major virus variants.
Other vaccines have also shown success against variants. Novavax, for instance, announced earlier this week its two-dose shot was 90% effective in a late-stage study. What's more, Novavax's vaccine was about 93% effective in preventing illnesses caused by variants of concern or variants of interest, the company said.
A quiet existence, until the pandemic
Since its founding in 2000, CureVac had a largely quiet existence until the pandemic. As one of the first companies trying to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, CureVac's CEO was invited to the White House in March 2020. Shortly after, reports circulated that the US had offered a "large sum" for access to its vaccine program. CureVac disputed the reports. The company also cycled through three CEOs in the span of a week.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also drawn attention to CureVac with his tweets. A Tesla subsidiary is working with CureVac in building a "prototype of an automated manufacturing unit," Insider reported in July.
In its Wednesday press release, CureVac focused attention on its second-generation coronavirus vaccine. Pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline has partnered with CureVac on that research, paying the company roughly $235 million upfront and investing an additional $180 million in multiple deals over the past year.
CureVac said it hopes this next-generation program could start human testing by the end of September, with the goal of launching in 2022.

Modifications:
I pretty much followed the pattern as written, but I did have to recalculate the stripes order for me to fit 3 colors not 2, in order and to make sure that the colors don't touch each other. It's like how I like my sandwiches - cheese and mustard can't touch each other because they're both yellow. Also, I did change a bit around the button bands. Instead of using same size needle as for the body, I went 2 size smaller needle, picked up more stitches. Also, smaller button holes to accommodate smaller buttons (I used 1 inch buttons instead of 1 3/8" because larger buttons = more expensive and harder to find). The pattern calls for 7 buttons, 5 for the body and 2 "vanity" buttons on the collar - I chose to ignore those top vanity ones, and put on 6 buttons on the body (below the neckline).
If I were to make this again, what would I have done different?
First of all, I would've made a size smaller (I made second size on the pattern), or don't increase as much around the bust area - well, what can I say, I don't have the "girls" to fill it in. Also I would make it a wee big longer, and maybe even a slightly longer collar too (maybe like half inch to an inch?).
Regardless, in the end, I do like how it turned out. It keeps me warm. Too bad that it's going to get too hot soon.
