Thomson Elite Black Setback Seatpost 30.9mm 367mm

August was quite the month - such a great month! Despite some technical setbacks, it turned out to be a sentimental, interesting, beautiful and profitable end to our summer.

I'm starting to get more photography work rolling in, which is very exciting. The most fun? I'm the photographer for a local candidate to our House. What a perfect way for me to merge my love of photography and my out and out geekiness over public policy and government affairs!

Can't wait to se what September has in store for us! (BVI anyone? =])

Happy Saturday, and happy September to you all

These are my original photos for each day of August, 2010, my 20th month of my Year in Pictures project.

.New Fresh Start program helping families hurt by foreclosure during recession

DOVER — A new state program is designed to help families and individuals who have experienced foreclosures, job loss, or other financial difficulties stemming from the financial crisis that began in 2008, Governor John Carney and other officials announced this week.

Fresh Start, a partnership between the Delaware State Housing Authority and DHSS’ financial empowerment program, $tand By Me, offers free financial coaching to help Delawareans get past setbacks and move toward home ownership again.

“Home ownership is a fundamental element of our economy and important to ensuring our neighborhoods thrive,” said Governor Carney. “We have to make sure that all Delawareans have an opportunity to succeed, achieve financial stability and strengthen their communities. Through Fresh Start, we are giving people the tools they need to help them work through economic challenges.”

The statewide program, funded by bank settlements, was developed to help Delawareans who lost their homes due to foreclosure, short sale, or deed in lieu arrangements, said DSHA Director Anas Ben Addi. They may wish to improve credit, increase savings, or decrease debt to put them in a better position to buy a home or rent.

“Fresh Start reaches Delawareans who have struggled to recover and get back on the path to financial stability,” Ben Addi said. “Losing your home or job is painful and a significant challenge, but with the right coaching and assistance, we can help Delaware families move forward again.”

$tand By Me, a partnership with the United Way of Delaware, works with nonprofits to offer personal financial coaching, with four coaches statewide devoted to helping Fresh Start clients.

“Our goal is to provide people with the information, resources and support they need to establish and achieve their financial goals,” said $tand By Me Director Mary Dupont. Since it began six years ago, $tand By Me has served more than 75,000 Delawareans, including more than 14,000 who have participated in financial coaching.

Governor Carney and other leaders spoke at an event formally kicking the program off at the Goodwill store at Lea Boulevard in Wilmington. Goodwill is one of three nonprofits with Fresh Start financial coaches, along with NCALL Research and Interfaith Community Housing of Delaware.

This barn at 2936 N. Wisner in the Avondale neighborhood dates to the 1880s.

The thirty-seven storey, 468 feet high Palmolive Building is a limestone tower with six symmetrical setbacks and indentations that telescope upwards to a flat roof. The receding setbacks create an elongated effect that is heightened by continuous channels of windows and vertical piers, which minimize the effect of horizontal breaks created by the setbacks. In the daytime the elegant appearance of the building is attributed to the graceful way in which the setbacks fold into one another. At night, when the building is illuminated the effect is reversed as the bright coloured floodlights dramatically contrast one vertical cliff against another.

At the time of completion the building was topped by a 150-foor mast carrying a powerful beam for aerial navigation. After serving as a navigation tool for over thirty years, the beacon was partially shielded in 1968 because it disturbed tenants in nearby high rises, particularly the 100-storey John Hancock Center (1965-70) where apartment-dwellers caught the beam dead in the eye. The beacon was extinguished in 1981 long after it had become obsolete as a navigation tool and had, instead, become a constant source of irritation to area residents.

The Palmolive was part of a design tradition that evolved after passage of the 1923 Chicago zoning law, which paved the way for setback skyscrapers. The architects produced an impressive and cohesive body of works in the late 1920s and early 1930s that included such elegant limestone setback towers as 333 North Michigan Avenue and the Chicago Board of Trade. The Palmolive is undoubtedly one of their most sophisticated designs. According to Robert Bruegmann in “Chicago History”, “the building can perhaps be considered the firm's most exemplary work of the late 1920s. Here, because there was an ample site and no tall neighbors to block the view, the architects created a nearly perfect expression of the high setback skyscraper”.

I've seen those setbacks that I've had and I realized I – I got through them, you know. I still managed to finish school. I still managed to pursue my career goals. Maybe it didn't happen exactly how I wanted, but life went on, and people supported me, and there was always people to – to help me out.

But century-maker Faheem Khatana and Luke Duckitt, caught off the final delivery, added 128 for the seventh wicket, enabling the visitors to post a competitive total. Openers Nathan Madden and Adam Stocks gave Triangle a solid start as the wicket dried but the hosts failed to build on those solid foundations, collapsing from 70-1 to 181-7. A late flurry from Chris Metcalf and Tom Kenworthy could not prevent defeat.

Match statistics:

.New Fresh Start program helping families hurt by foreclosure during recession

Today is my first day hitting the gym this year. I've had many setbacks over the past 6 months or so. From a hand injury, groin and the latest ankle surgery. I felt like my body has been falling apart. I'm truly done making excuses! I was once told this many years ago and it always stuck with me: "EXCUSES ARE TOOLS OF INCOMPETENCE WHICH BUILDS MONUMENTS OF NOTHINGNESS AND THOSE WHO SPECIALIZE IN THEM ARE USUALLY CAPABLE OF NOTHING ELSE!" I'm going to start being my strong and relentless self again! I want to thank my amazing supportive wife @yarablancovich for inspiring me. She has not wavered from her goals! #Day1 - vicbefit

Karoonda Hospital Opened By Chief Secretary

DISTRICT COMMENDED ON ITS OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT

Karoonda October 20

The Karoonda and District Soldiers' Memorial Hospital was officially opened by the Chief Secretary (Hon A L McEwin) in the presence of a large gathering on Friday afternoon. The chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr H W Petras) gave a comprehensive outline of the board's activities since its inception, and welcomed the official party, which included, besides the Chief Secretary, the Hon J L Bice and Hon L H Densley, MLCs, Mr T C Stott MP and Dr and Mrs Nancarrow, Mr Petras stated that the board had encountered many difficulties and setbacks before its aims had been fulfilled, but he was now happy to state that the primary objective of establishing a hospital in Karoonda had been accomplished, and he appealed to the people to see that it remained as it was—a memorial—in the true sense of the word to blend and serve the people of the district for all time. He stated that a hospital must have public support, and he appealed for a continuance of the support that had been so willingly given for the establishment of the hospitals.

He expressed the board's sincere appreciation to the Karoonda Ladies' Hospital Auxiliary, which had raised some £276 in a matter of a few months, and had assisted in working bees and presented much valuable equipment to the hospital: the Wynarka, Borrika-Sandalwood, and Perponda-Kalyan Ladies Committees' for generous support, monetary gifts of equipment; the Karoonda Sub-branch of the RSL for its assistance at working bees and wonderful efforts in raising £130: the Karoonda District Council for its co-operation: Mr L Bernadi for his material assistance in carrying out the work of making the front approach of the hospital as it was at the present time.

Mr Petras further stated that he particularly wished to thank the Red Cross Society for its generous donation of linen, bed spreads, garments, and other items, and he wished to make it known publicly that the board deeply appreciated the assistance that the society had rendered.

Mr J LBice stated that he was proud to be associated with any hospital movement, but it made him all the prouder to be associated with a hospital in this district. He stated that both the Premier and Chief Secretary always lent a willing ear to country appeals for medical assistance and that they were always concerned for the health of the community.

Mr Stott congratulated the board on the fulfilment of their ambition, and he appealed to the people of the district to give the hospital their full support.

Mr Densley added his congratulations and endorsed, the remarks of the previous speakers.

Mr McEwen stated that it was two years ago this month that he visited Karoonda at the invitation of the Progress Association to discuss the possibility of reopening the hospital in Karoonda. On the facts placed before him on that occasion he could not give a very promising reply and he was afraid the people would not have a very favourable impression of his visit. He was pleased to state that his somewhat pessimistic report had not dampened the ardour and enthusiasm of the people in their aim.

In August of last year he had received a deputation from the hospital board, which had then evolved a tangible scheme for the purchase of the Karoonda hostel with the idea of converting it into a hospital. He was favourably impressed with the scheme and was able to obtain a grant of £1,000 for its execution.

He stressed the urgency of keeping alive the activities of the Ladies' Auxiliary. Mr McEwin went on to state that we were getting a young doctor from the best training school in the Commonwealth, and because of his youth he had had the advantage of learning medicine and surgery under the most modern conditions. He stated that the people had worked well in the past and he hoped they would continue to do so in the future to retain the hospital in the district.

Mr McEwin, amid loud applause then cut the ribbon and declared the hospital open.

Prior to official opening by Mr McEwin, Dr and Mrs Nancarrow were introduced to the public by Mr Petras.

After the opening ceremony the large gathering proceeded to the oval where the Karoonda area school children held their annual sports day. Time would not permit the completion of the programme, but at the end of the day Lowrie House, with 152½ points, held a slender lead from Perkins House 148½ with Ridley House 142 in third place. Two more events have yet to be decided and the final polling of the houses promises to be close and interesting.

Gate takings amounted to £13/4/-.

The Ladies' Auxiliary conducted stalls in the pavilion at the sports. Proceeds amounted to £26/12/6.

£20 from Ball

The day was brought to a successful conclusion with a ball in the Institute at night. Music was supplied by Oakley's Orchestra, Mr and Mrs R E Coward, Mrs R M LeMaistre, and Mrs O R Williams, all of whom played gratis. Mr V K Petras was in charge of the ticket office, and Mr C J Blenkiron was doorkeeper. Mr J Coombs, was MC. A buffet supper was served in the Institute. Proceeds from the hall amounted to approximately £20.

333 North Michigan is an art deco skyscraper located in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Architecturally, it is noted for its dramatic upper-level setbacks that were inspired by the 1923 skyscraper zoning laws. Geographically, it is known as one of the four 1920s flanks of the Michigan Avenue Bridge (along with the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower and the London Guarantee Building) that are contributing properties to the Michigan–Wacker Historic District, which is a U.S. Registered Historic District.

Additionally, it is known as the geographic beneficiary of the jog in Michigan Avenue, which makes it visible along the Magnificent Mile as the building that seems to be in the middle of the road at the foot of this stretch of road (pictured at left). The building was designed by Holabird & Roche/Holabird & Root and completed in 1928. It is 396 feet (120.7 m) tall, and has 34 storeys.

The building is embellished by a polished marble base, ornamental bands, and reliefs depicting frontiersmen and Native Americans at Fort Dearborn, which partially occupied the site.
