Der Serval ist eine mittelgroße Art der Katzen, die meist auf ockergelbem Grund schwarz gefleckt ist. Die sehr schlanke und hohe Art zeichnet sich durch sehr lange Beine und einen kleinen Kopf mit großen Ohren aus. Er lebt als Jäger in den Steppen und Savannen in Afrika und ernährt sich vor allem von kleinen Nagetieren, die er durch sein sehr gutes Gehör aufspürt.

A rare sighting and even more rare capture of a serval cat with a small prey in his mouth! Unfortunately the serval did not jump while catching the lizard!

A re-edit of a photo from a 2019 safari in northern Tanzania: This serval, spotted like a leopard, slinky and small-headed like a cheetah, a bit taller and lot longer than a house cat -- it looks like a friendly kitty and it wasn't bothered at all by our presence at it slithered through the savanna south of the Seronera region, eyes, ears and nose to the ground, hunting for lizards and small mammals. c.2019 John M. The beautifully marked Serval is a slender spotted cat associated with moist savannah, swamp and forest fringe habitats in Africa. Servals are common where there is plenty of water – they prefer areas of bush, tall grass and dry reed beds near streams. They are also found in high-altitude moorlands and thicket. This example is seen at the Cat Survival Trust, a charity which houses an array of species for education and conservation purposes.

We were very fortunate to see a serval in the Mara, a sighting which apparently only happens about once a week. It didn't last long before venturing off from our vehicle.

Male serval (Leptailurus serval) named "Emmett", was in Zoo Boise and now living at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and working as an animal ambassador.

Le serval (Leptailurus serval) est proche du chat doré africain ainsi que du caracal. Il fait partie des félins capables de ronronner. Le serval est également capable de feuler (cracher), grogner et miauler. Ce chat serval, est assez commun en Afrique, il vit principalement dans les savanes humides.
Le serval est carnivore, il se nourrit d'autres mammifères tels que les rongeurs (comme le rat), les lapins, les damans, les antilopes naines (ourébis, dik-diks, steenbok), et d'oiseaux, ainsi que d'insectes et de grenouilles. Le serval s'attaque peu aux grandes proies, 90 % de ses proies pèsent moins de 200 grammes.
Les servals, comme les guépards, sont généralement amicaux et faciles à domestiquer. Les Anciens Égyptiens l'adoraient comme un dieu au même titre que les chats. Certains d'entre eux sont domestiqués et s'attachent beaucoup à leur maître.
Le serval (Leptailurus serval) est petit félin que l'on trouve parfois en Afrique et ici au Kenya. Ce chat haut sur patte n'est pas très grand ce qui lui permet de se fondre dans les herbes sans être repéré par ses proies. C'est surtout un excellent chasseur de rongeurs.

Le Serval est un carnivore qui appartient à la famille des Felidae et au genre Leptailurus dont il est la seule espèce. C’est l’un des carnivores les plus répandus sur le continent africain, que l’on rencontre principalement dans la savane là où, du fait de la présence de marais, l’herbe est haute et l’humidité omniprésente.
Il a le même ancêtre que le lion, mais le serval constitue à lui seul une lignée bien spécifique. Il ne pourrait donc être assimilé aux autres félins, à l’exception du caracal (Caracal caracal) et du chat doré africain (Caracal aurata) dont il pourrait être proche.
Le serval ressemble à un gros chat sauvage de la savane. Son croisement avec un chat domestique est à l’origine du Savannah, une race de chat qui n’existe que depuis 1986.

So here is my story, we are in our safari vehicle, and our guide says look there are two Serval Cats in that meadow. I do not see them but i trusted our guide and snapped a photo. When i got home and took at look, yep there they are.

Serval cats are wild animals. Native to many parts of Africa, serval cats roam savannahs and wetlands hunting for prey . They are a long-limbed, nocturnal African cat and Felis serval, it’s zoological name, is about the size of a bobcat or a medium-sized dog, having a tawny coat spotted with black: now rare in many former habitats.
