Best I could do given the height of the grass, but all serval sightings are good sightings!

The serval is a wild cat native to Africa

Servals are wild medium-sized cats found in Africa. And they are very elusive. So when our trip leader suggested we would see them while in Ndutu I was skeptical. But indeed we did see them, multiple times, in fact. They are quick to hide when spotted, but we managed a few decent views. We found this Serval over near the marsh one morning at dawn. Although it was fairly visible where it stood, three feet further back into the weeds and it would disappear entirely. February 3, 2017

Walking in the Grass

The serval is a wild small cat native to Africa. It is widespread in sub-Saharan countries, where it inhabits grasslands, wetlands, moorlands and bamboo thickets. Across its range, it occurs in protected areas, and hunting it is either prohibited or regulated in range countries.

The serval (Leptailurus serval), is a wild cat found in Africa. It is the sole member of the genus Leptailurus. The serval is a slender, medium-sized cat that stands 54–62 cm (21–24 in) at the shoulder and weighs 9–18 kg (20–40 lb). It is characterised by a small head, large ears, a golden-yellow to buff coat spotted and striped with black, and a short, black-tipped tail. The serval has the longest legs of any cat relative to its body size.

Active in the day as well as at night, servals tend to be solitary with minimal social interaction. Servals are carnivores – they prey on rodents (particularly vlei rats), small birds, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval uses its sense of hearing to locate the prey; to kill small prey, it leaps over 2 m (6 ft 7 in) above the ground to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the neck or the head.

At long last, I finally managed to get a few photos of what for me has been a very elusive cat - the beautiful Serval. During previous safaris I’ve only ever seen two, and both of those were at distance and with their backs to us. Since those sightings many years ago in Ruaha, Tanzania, the Serval has been very high on my ‘wish list'. Our Maasai guide James knew this from our previous trip (when he could only come up with a Caracal) and, consequently, made a special effort one day to spend time looking for one. After nearly two hours searching a long-grass area near the river I’d just about given up hope until I saw this little beauty crossing a bare patch of earth. It was some way off and I’m sure that if it had been in the tall grass it would have been hidden from view. We didn’t have that long with it, but it’s an encounter that I’ll remember for a long time.
