Serval cats are wild animals. Native to many parts of Africa, serval cats roam savannahs and wetlands hunting for prey . They are a long-limbed, nocturnal African cat and Felis serval, it’s zoological name, is about the size of a bobcat or a medium-sized dog, having a tawny coat spotted with black: now rare in many former habitats.
Taken from a print I have of a pencil drawing..
We were very lucky when this cat decided to come out of the thick brush and rest in clear view of us. For a secretive animal. he was not in the least concerned about us.
Thanks again to Rosemary and Ian (and Joseph) for this superb encounter.

In North Africa, the serval is known only from Morocco and has been reintroduced in Tunisia, but is feared to be extinct in Algeria. It inhabits semi-arid areas and cork oak forests close to the Mediterranean Sea, but avoids rainforests and arid areas. It occurs in the Sahel, and is widespread in Southern Africa. It inhabits grasslands, moorlands and bamboo thickets at high altitudes up to 3,800 m (12,500 ft) on Mount Kilimanjaro. It prefers areas close to water bodies such as wetland and savanna, which provide cover such as reeds and tall grasses. In the East Sudanian Savanna, it was recorded in the transboundary Dinder–Alatash protected area complex during surveys between 2015 and 2018.
In Zambia's Luambe National Park, the population density was recorded as 0.1/km2 in 2011. In South Africa, the serval was recorded in Free State, eastern Northern Cape, and southern North West. In Namibia, it is present in Khaudum and Mudumu National Parks.
There were two major difficulties in making this photo: the tall grasses at this time in the Masai Mara and the very harsh midday light which creates a veil of heat - and which is a sore for all photographers.
You can hardly photograph a Serval at the start of the day because it waits until the grasses are dry to hunt rodents, birds or lizards.
However, I was already quite happy with this meeting, even with a photo of average quality.

DSC_0203. We just left the tented camp when we found this beautiful serval cat walking close to our vehicle. It obviously was hunting and very alert and ignoring our vehicle! They are so beautiful with their great colors and long legs.

We saw this beautiful serval cat out hunting one day and were able to watch it for a while. We actually saw three different serval cats that day. Later that day, we came upon an older male serval cat marking his territory and shortly after we saw a younger male not far from the other serval.
A Serval is a small beautiful spotted cat. (20-40 lbs) We saw a few of them in the morning, well before light to photograph. However, one morning we spotted one after sunrise and I was given a few brief moments to capture a few shots before it darted away. I’ve read that they are active both day and night, although I suspect that they are much more active at night or during dusk and dawn. A beautiful creature, I’m grateful it gave me a shot. "The photo is the hunt. It’s the instinct of hunting without the desire to kill. It’s the hunt of angels… you track, you aim, you fire and-click! Instead of a dead man, you make him eternal." - Chris Marker
“ "Sport" hunting is a sickness, a perversion and a danger and should be recognised as such.
People who get their 'amusement' from hunting and killing defenceless animals can only be suffering from a mental disorder.
In a world with boundless opportunities for amusement, it's detestable that anyone would choose to get thrills from killing others who ask for nothing from life but the chance to remain alive. ” Sir Roger Moore
