nrhp # 91000632- Located in the heart of downtown Sequim, the Sequim Opera House served to quench the creative thirsts and entertainment needs of area residents for many decades. Built in 1906 by Austin Smith and opened the following year by prominent area entrepreneur Charles Franklin Seal, the two-story structure with retail space on the ground floor and a second-level auditorium with stage was the site of musical events, concerts, dances, school graduations, film screenings, public meets and civic gatherings. It remains one of Sequim’s oldest commercial buildings and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Got a late start and hit what I thought was the Maynard Burn Trail but turns out I was on the newer Tyler Peak Trail. I got to the ridge and some Marines that were camped on the ridge (who also boasted several times about their 80 pound packs full of beer) told me I was actually on the Tyler Peak Trail. No matter, both trails lead to the same ridge and soon I was on my way to Baldy. My original goal was to hike to the top of Grey Wolf but due to my late start this would have to wait for another day. Excellent views this trip of the interior Olympics including Grey Wolf, Tyler, Buckhorn, The Needles, Royal Creek drainage, Mount Olympus, Sequim, San Jauns and Canada. Tyler Peak trail and the Maynard Burn Trail are both very steep. If you want a water source on the way up or down I would suggest the Tyler Peak Trail. I think The Maynard Burn Trail is better maintained as I saw no blow downs when Tyler had several. All in all a good trip but very tiring with what my GPS says is 4250 feet of Elevation gain in 7 miles RT. Whichever route you take, it is a good idea to either be very proficient at route finding or take a GPS. When you come out of the trees near the top, the trails just peter out and if you are not paying attention to where they are they can be hard to find on the way out, especially if the weather turns bad.

Cedarbrook was the first farm we visited during the 2006 Lavender Festival in Sequim. The atmosphere was charming: the focal point of the site is Bell House, a stately 100-year old farmhouse surrounded by a huge, lush cottage-and-herb garden. The festival booths were set up near the shade of a grand old crabapple tree, and wandering the herb stand was Minnie, a resident white kitty with calico markings.

The garden was the real delight-- lavender, santolina, and poppies punctuated by spires of ornamental thistle, alliums, and bee balm. They have a rental cottage on the premises-- I could easily see spending a weekend wandering the herbs and flowers.

The Olympic Peninsula

Sequim, Washington

Tuesday, August 16, 2011 we sailed to Port Angeles, in Washington Stated, USA, for a two-night visit with friends who live in Sequim, WA. We've been friends with Jay&Suzanne since 1998 but this was our first visit back to their Sequim home since 2005. They are American citizens and live 6-months/per/year here at their Victoria, BC, home. We had a great time. thanks to Jay &suzanne for being our best friends.

One of the highlights of our visit was returning to the The Olympic Discovery Trail

The Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) traverses over 120 miles of lowlands between the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Currently, 40 miles of paved trail are complete, connecting Blyn on Sequim Bay with the cities of Sequim and Port Angeles. At the ODT's eastern end, an additional 6 miles have been constructed running south from the seaport of Port Townsend.
