This is the same confrontation, next frame. As you see, the phoebe veered to follow the path of the fly, and has it in the bag at this point!

The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it dies. Within it, at all times, it contains its whole potential. It seems to be constantly in the process of change: Yet at each state, at each moment, it is perfectly all right as it is - Paulo Coelho

Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala) juvenile adult

Following yesterday's post of the chicks waiting for Mum, she arrived with some Lerps for them. If you look closely you will see some Lerps in Mums beak.

For those not familiar with Lerps I add the following -

Lerps are basically pure starch with some proteins and fats. They are white in colour, about 5mm in size and look like round, pointy hats. They are created by psyllids. Psyllids are tiny sap-sucking insects. Like many insects, adult female psyllids lay eggs, which hatch into nymphs, which transition through various nymphal stages before emerging as adults. An adult psyllid is about 4mm in size. Psyllids build lerps, which act like tents, to protect them from predators and drying winds.

Psyllids draw sap out of leaves and create their hut-like homes (lerps) to live in. Unfortunately for psyllids, their homes taste sweet (containing more starch than cane sugar) and are prized food of birds, mammals and opportunistic humans. The level of sweetness fluctuates depending on the season, weather and the species of psyllid. Yes, there are over 300 species of psyllid in Australia. Some are associated with only one species of tree, whereas other psyllid species can live on several plant species.

This is the sequel of a photo I posted two years ago, titled Home Alone, of an Eastern Screech Owl (Grey Morph) chick peeking out of a nesting hole while three of its siblings fledged and sat on a tree nearby. The scene repeated itself this year with a new set of 4 chicks; three already left the nest and were around somewhere in the park while this one seemed to be content in staying in its comfort zone a little longer. The adult male, sitting on a branch slightly above the hole, kept an eye on the youngster. Rosetta McClain Gardens, Toronto, Ontario.

The Journey Continues.

The sequel to the "Sicilian Edition".

And: actually there's nothing Italian here, all is made in China....

This is the sequel of the photo I posted two days ago which showed Linus with the autumn leaves he had borrowed from his brother Fynn. Fynn stayed surprisingly calm when he found out that some of his leaves were missing but Linus had to answer some serious questions. Under Fynn's gaze Linus forgot all his carefully prepared explanations and just muttered something like "I don't know what happened", not very convincing.

When I first saw the upper scene I noticed the two that were touching and thought "how sweet." But three seconds later, not so sweet.

A new session of water drop shots, this time closer to the subject and from a more flat angle in an attempt to make the effect itself the important part. I had food colours in the water in the MIOPS container. Also, In the bowl below I had a spot of milk to make the water more opaque - and some food colours as well. The backgrounds were simply different coloured plastic binders which are semi-clear with a frosted quality to it, which I like. Because of the issues below I never did try to add the Xanthan gum thickened water I prepared - I just didn't have the strength to add another variable to the shoot ;)

I used a recently purchased Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens for the session. To be quite honest, this was a frustrating shoot. I couldn't get the DOF perfect although I tried varying the F-stop and moving the camera around. I need some help to maximise the DOF so please let me know if you have suggestions to the range to the drop from the lens - or any other suggestions for that matter. Focus also caused me issues for some reason. I placed a pen in the water in some Tac-All so it was stable and fired the MIOPS to find the exact spot to set focus on. How do you achieve perfect focus? I let the the drop hit the center of the pen but should it perhaps be slightly in front or the back?

I used 2 Speedlights off-camera on 1/32 power, one illuminating the back and another, with a softbox mounted, illuminating the drop. 1/250 shutter speed and varying f-stops.

Please let me know if you have experience using 3+ drops with the MIOPS; I just can't seem to get a third drop to actually have an effect. Help! :)
