The word "Creativity" from p.301 of "The Art of Photography" by Bruce Barnbaum. Taken on segments with about 3.17x zoom (using lens on reverse), and segments were overlapped with no perspective correction.

Segment 2 is a very dry and exposed section of the Colorado Trail. In 1996 the Buffalo Creek fire destroyed the pine forests and turned a portion of segment 2 into an arid, almost desert like environment. An unexpected area within the mountains of Colorado. But Segment 2 doesn't start until reacquiring the South Platte River and that was still almost 8 miles away.

After a restful night of sleep I awoke sometime after 6. I lingered in camp until 8 and then started hiking. Took a few pictures before my first break at some rocks with a nice overlook. I thought this was the 'ridge' as listed in my Colorado Trail Atlas, which is the high point before descending to the South Platte. I was not as far as I though I was but it was a nice place for a break after more than an hour of hiking. I took some zoomed in pictures of houses on far away mountains as well as Littleton. The scenery was beginning to be fantastic. There was a campsite behind the rocks, but no nearby water source.

I left this spectacular viewpoint and wandered past the 'ridge' approximately 45 minutes later. It seemed like I was moving slow. It took about 3 hours to hike less than 4 miles, including the break. It was mostly uphill though.

Finally going downhill, toward Segment 2 and the South Platte. Of course, there were nice views along the way including a peak or two of the river. There seemed to be about 50 switchback but going downhill I was hiking much quicker ... 3.9 miles in about 1 1/2 hours. It was 1250 and about 90f, the South Platte Canyon Trailhead was a welcome break.

It was already hot (and promised to be hotter through the burn area) so I took a nice long break, about 2 1/2 hours. The trailhead is on a dirt road, but there were plenty of cars here. One of the hikers from the night before caught a ride into town to reorganize and possibly come back out. There is also a privy here.

Rising Sunday morning at 4 am at Armstrong aid station, Ingrid and I set out on my 2nd segment to Heavenly.

I made this card for my cousin in May, 2014.

This is probably the sketchiest segment of U.S. highway I've ever driven in Colorado. I'd gotten around a bunch of slow traffic a bit earlier, but I didn't mind this time when it all slowed down in front of me. That dropoff to the left goes straight down about a thousand feet. Take a bad turn here, and you won't stop for a while. And then you'll stop all at once very suddenly.

This is what the guys were thinking of when they started calling US 550 the "Million Dollar Highway," though nobody remembers whether the name refers to how much the highway cost to build or how much silver wound up hauled along it. One story says an early traveler said you couldn't pay him a million dollars to take this road again.

Construction of this section of road from Red Mountain Pass to the town of Ouray was started in 1880, just as the silver miners were starting to inch their way up this canyon. The mines took off quickly, but the wagon company that meant to build this road ran out of money in 1882 when the road was still half done. A man named Otto Mears took over the project, then, and finished it only a year later. He operated this as a toll road well into the 20th century until the 1920s, when the Federal Government absorbed it into the new U.S. highway system and designated it part of US 550.

Sundsvall Vodka by V&S Vin & Sprit AB (1997-2000) - the precursor to Absolut Level.

The launch and failure of Sundsvall Vodka illustrate the difficulties of competing in the U.S. super-premium vodka segment. The product was launched by Seagram in 1997 to fight against the new premium brands that were cutting into sales of its Absolut brand.

Sundsvall was named after a town in northern Sweden where it was distilled in partnership with Absolut Vodka, because the company hoped that drinkers would identify with a folksy-sounding town connected to the vodka's origins. To ensure a separate identity for Sundsvall, Absolut Vodka took the brand's advertising account to Boston-based Arnold Communications, bypassing Absolut's long-time agency, TBWA Chiat/Day, and made no reference to Absolut anywhere in its marketing materials.

Sundsvall was positioned as a two-grain vodka with a two-tiered distillation process, coming from "a country with centuries of vodka-making experience." The vodka was launched with a series of VIP tastings. While other super-premiums were rolled out nationwide, the strategy for Sundsvall was to target eight trendsetting cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco. The brand hosted dinners in the cities' restaurants known for their "upscale trendsetting" clientele from the worlds of art, philanthropy, business and government. Additionally, Seagram sent bottles of Sundsvall, along with a sipping glass, to 125 consumers in each of the eight markets.

Sundsvall made its debut in bars and restaurants in the Fall of 1998. The vodka was deemed quite good by many bartenders, but the bottle - a clear barrel with an orange shrink-wrapped top - was viewed by servers and distributors as too plain and "too discrete where it was competing." The brand was often behind its rivals in terms of getting the attention of media and opinion leaders. Moreover, Seagram failed to implement a comprehensive bartender education plan. Unable to leverage the Absolut connection, many Seagram sales reps found it difficult to promote the brand, as many retailers had never heard of Sundsvall. Because "in the U.S. you get one chance to succeed, not two", Sundsvall was pulled from the market in December 2000.

I have a love/hate relationship with the SparkFun 7-segment displays. Most of the time, I am able to get them to work only for a few moments, and then never again. A recently revised version was released, and it looked to solve a lot of my problems, so I put it to the test. I connected it to an HIH-6130 temperature/humidity sensor. After working through a few issues on the provided code for the 7-segment display, I was able to display the room temperature.

I had this ring of beech and knew it would split, so i segmented it and doweled it back together(almost) i liked the effect so left it with the gaps.

Day 12

dispersed camping area near Mount Shavano trailhead

Today was the last day of hiking during this trip. I camped right near the trailhead so I was able to start hiking early. It was a short dayhike of about 3 miles out and 3 miles back. Fairly easy hiking below treeline on Segment 14. Mount Shavano, a 14er, was nearby but I did not hike it.

Day 4 random campsite (Segment 17) to random campsite (Segment 19)

This day was all about the meadows. It started off with a fairly steep, short climb. Then the trail made its way down to Lujan Creek within a large meadow. This was Lujan Pass. I stopped for a coffee break and water fill-up. Normally, the trail would come down and then head back uphill shortly thereafter. But not this time. The trail continued to follow the meadow downhill via an old road. Nice easy walking to CO114.

There was a short road walk on CO114 and then a gate to pass through. This was the start of Segment 18. Another meadow to pass through. One problem about hiking through the open spaces of meadows is the lack of shade. Fortunately, today had plenty of cloud cover to prevent baking in the sun. It did rain a few times, but never for too long or too hard.

After hiking through some cow pastures (don't drink the water!) came into a huge valley that again was easy walking. Rain was threatening, so I couldn't stop for an early Dinner Break. I pushed on to a campsite within an Aspen Grove on the edge of the valley/meadow.

Today there was alot of dirt road walking which was very easy and good for extra mileage. This section was probably one of the easiest yet. Overall did 19.5 miles and was a little sore.
