There were several types of mammoth, all members of the elephant family. Most widespread was the Woolly Mammoths, which ranged across all northern continents and grew a very long, thick, hairy coat to keep out the bitter cold of the recent Ice Ages.

The woolly mammoth was roughly the same size as modern African elephant. Males reached shoulder heights between 2.7 and 3.4 m (9 and 11 ft) and weighed up to 6 tonnes (6.6 short tons). Females averaged 2.6–2.9 metres (8.5–9.5 ft) in height and weighed up to 4 tonnes (4.4 short tons). A newborn calf weighed about 90 kilograms (200 lb).

The woolly mammoth coexisted with early humans, who used its bones and tusks for making art, tools, and dwellings, and the species was also hunted for food. It disappeared from its mainland range at the end of the Pleistocene 10,000 years ago, most likely through climate change and consequent shrinkage of its habitat, hunting by humans, or a combination of the two.

The teeth of a mammoth consist of a series of plates composed of enamel surrounding a dentine core. These are held together in a matrix of dental cement.

Each tooth erupted from the back of the jaw and slowly moved forward as it wore, to be replaced by another tooth from behind. The thickness and number of tooth plates are important identification criteria.

Day 2

Segment 9 random pond to Segment 10 random spot

Fortunately it wasn't too cold ... probably in the 40s. The moon was quite bright but it did drizzle several times. I didn't sleep very well with alot of tossing and turning.

I had been contemplating climbing Mount Massive while I was nearby. I would have stashed my pack somewhere below treeline and then climbed. Doing it while hiking the Colorado Trail would mean fewer overall daily miles than during a dayhike. The closest trailhead would add 6 miles to a roundtrip dayhike. In theory, it would have been easier to do it while this close. However, with more anticipated cold weather, I knew I would not want to get up earlier than usual to tackle this challenge. (Leadville is nearby and I recall the forecast for being in the 20s.) I decided to do the hike after finishing this hike instead.

Packed up and hiking by about 7:30 with about 2.5 miles of hiking left in Segment 9 and Holy Cross Wilderness. I took a short break at Timberline Lake Trailhead. In the mornings, after about an hour of hiking and when I come across a water source, I like to take a coffee break. Kind of a second breakfast stop. I dayhiked to Timberline Lake back in 2016. Nice hike to a high alpine lake. This trailhead also leads to Leadville.

Since January 1st 2010, I have been taking and uploading one square picture each day.

Full scale segment print with buttons.

Not sure how to turn this.

I need to have the interface between AllBlack rim disk and Index ring, turning at right angles to the axis or the join will be wobbly.

If I put the shaft in the chuck, I could use the tail stop to align things, then remove it.

Might be best to remove the tapered jaws, they will only be in the way.

A selection of photos put together in a grid. These were taken as part of a project exploring the body. I focused on its differences and simalarities-for example finding scars, blemishes and different muscles/bone structures in a range of individuals.

I have been done this project for my local client. They are satisfied and also appreciating me for doing this.

I always do their work with integrity and loyality. I feeling blessed to work with Them.

Thank you.

Day 9

Salida, CO to Avalanche Trailhead (Segment 13) to random campsite (Segment 12)

Darryll arrived on time with his son, Adam, and then we met Brenda and Satori at Princeton Hot Springs. They dropped off a car there. It took much longer to get to their trailhead. I was dropped off at Avalanche trailhead (once we found it) about 3 miles away. Thanks for the rides.

The climb from Avalanche was pretty tough but manageable, of course. My knee did start to hurt though. Brenda had given me some wrap to try which I will tomorrow. At the top it was not above treeline. Mount Yale was nearby. It looked like a nice place to camp.

The downhill was also tough but OK. I met 2 groups doing trail maintenance. Thanks for the Hard Work! One was at Silver Creek trailhead. I stopped and helped them move a rock and then I took a short break.

It started to rain, so I started hiking in Segment 12 now. The rain didn't last but maybe 5 minutes though. It was a long haul to the top, about 9 miles where I finally set-up camp. No other rain threatening until now. I actually though I might get a sunset. Oh well!

I did see a handful of hikers, so everyone didn't do the West side, which I would have suggested. 16.1 total miles for the day.

2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. In the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), the right aft center segment of a Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) is lowered toward the aft booster for mating. The aft booster arrived in the VAB Nov. 22 for the Return to Flight mission STS-114. Two SRBs are stacked on the Mobile Launch Platform and later joined by the External Tank.. The twin 149- foot tall, 12-foot diameter SRBs provide the main propulsion system during launch. They operate parallel with the Space Shuttle main engines for the first two minutes of flight and jettison away from the orbiter with help from the Booster Separation Motors, about 26.3 nautical miles above the Earths surface. I stumbled on workers assembling a tower crane at Robson and Granville Streets. Happily, I passed by just as they were starting to raise a new segment to the tower. Unhappily, I only had time to stay for this one segment.

Pretty difficult to see what's going on here. The foreground is actually part of the eventual arm of the crane. It's resting on "sawhorses" (out of frame), hence a few feet off the ground. The segment of the tower is also horizontal, and behind this. You can see the chains if you look closely. The helper crane has just lifted the segment off a flatbed truck, which then drove out from under it. Now the segment is being lowered onto the ground, where the crew will move the chains onto the top end of it for lifting it up.

Went to West Meadow Beach to try to get some sunset pictures but it was cloudy. Luckily, it was also low tide and I got to see some neat things in the water including this 8 foot long worm! Okay, more like 6 inches.

Using a 5-axes CNC controlled machine tool, we obtain individual gear segments with identical rough radius of curvature and high-quality ISO-DIN 7 gears. Positioned along the load bearing frame of the antenna, they make up the gear circumference with rough diameters greater than 30 m and therefore suitable for raising satellite dishes with diameters greater than 60 m.

Grassy Cove Segment of the Cumberland Trail - March 21, 2015

CO (Eagle County)

My plan for this year was to hike from Breckenridge to Twin Lakes, via Leadville, and then hike the Collegiate Loop. That would've been about 200 miles. I didn't even make it to Twin Lakes. For some reason I just wasn't in to hiking this year. Maybe it was the distance, I don't know. The scenery that I had already enjoyed should have spurred me on but it did not.

The hiking for the day was not difficult. The trail went past a few landmarks. First thing in the morning was Cataract Creek Falls. Shortly thereafter the trail went through a meadow until it passes Camp Hale bunker ruins. At 9300' Camp Hale was a military, winter training camp during WWII. I bet it was cold and snowy!

After crossing East Fork Eagle River, the trail reentered the woods. I took a short break at the James Miller Memorial Bench where I contemplated going into Leadville earlier than planned. There are 3 easy access points to Leadville from the Colorado Trail. I was planning to catch a hitch at the end of Segment 8 via Tennessee Pass off of US24. The trail crosses US24 several miles before Tennessee Pass and that is where I decided to go in.

I caught a ride fairly quickly and made it to the Leadville Hostel where my car was parked. I was done hiking but I wasn't done hiking. Less than 35 miles of hiking for this year. Well those were backpacking miles. After getting off the trail I hung around Leadville for a few days. I day hiked the rest of Segment 8 and a portion of Segment 9. I climbed Mount Elbert (start very early to avoid crowds and possible thunderstorms).

So even though I didn't hike as far as I had planned I still had a good time exploring around Leadville.
