Volunteer Troy Wouters plants a bitterbrush seedling on the Willow Fire area Saturday, April 6, 2013 as part of a volunteer sagebrush seedling rehabilitation effort. Almost 40 volunteers showed up representing federal and state government agencies, non-profit groups and local ranches. Many families joined in the effort where ages ranged from 4 to 75-years-old.

I built a "lasagna garden" bed for these pumpkin seedlings. this looks like a mess but it's layers of cardboard, newspapers, leaves and soil. It's thicker than it looks in this photo.

Merigolds and Nasturiums

The seedlings are grown seperately in our nurseries, before we collect them together to plant them. Importantly our farm allows us to provide employment for workers who others would not employ as they become too old as well as for the stronger younger people.

Students grew tobacco in tiny grow chambers to count the number of albino seedlings produced. The ratio is the expected 3 to 1.

Tiny seedlings in the burnt forest.

If you compare this to my earlier pics you will notice the earth is darker... there must have been some rain because the ground was quite damp.

After the meeting in Ihuamaca, we headed back to Jaen the next day to begin the celebrations with a parade.

A grocery chain in Australia is currently giving away little tubs of seeds for children to plant, water and watch grow. This tray shows the variety of seeds in the promotion. You get one tub for each $30 spent in store. My granddaughters are enjoying watching the seeds sprout.

Q: When should I separate my seedlings?"

A: From this photo, maybe a month ago! If you keep them overly crowded like this, they'll eventually kill each other off and only the biggest, baddest will survive. Either that or they'll all succumb to disease from a stressful grow environment.
