A brand-new collard plant. A lady sent me an envelope full of seeds last fall; she said they were from plants she grew, very tall ones. 5-6', something like that. Two prominent cotyledons, and the first leaf.

I have transplanted this seedling from the seedtray to the lawn to see what happens....
Basically I want to change my lawn into a wild flower meadow - but until i have some wild flowers I will just plant the odd thing here and there to spruce it up a little ... only a lot of the seedlings I have planted have been attacked. I thought snails were the culprits but there are a lot of small holes in the leaves and yellowing of the first leaves...hmmm
At the tree nursery in La Liberdad in Guatemala, seeds are prepared for planting. Some tropical seeds require the heat of fire before they can sprout. This ramon tree seed, which usually requires fire before sprouting, has been artificially enduced to sprout by submerging it in boiling water for one minute followed by five minutes in warm water. It works just like fire.

2015 seedling 15-70. It grew very well in 2016 and we will grow lots of it in 2017 and will probably name it. It is a miniature flower at about 4 inches in diameter and that makes it even more desirable.
Well, I never!
I found a little seedling growing in a crack in our paving at least five years ago. I thought it was Holly. I potted it up and have looked after it very carefully ever since. It has now decided to have some flowers, which didn't look very Holly-like to me, so I asked Google, and lo and behold....
The image shows Berberis darwinii, commonly known as Darwin's Barberry. This is a popular evergreen shrub known for its vibrant flowers and suitability for various garden uses.
So now I have a Berberis darwinii - who'd have thought!
Stinging Nettle seedling. When it grows up it will protect my tomatoes from root disease and prowling critters.
I'm really not sure what I planted here. I know they are flowers that do well in the shade. I'll spread them out a bit when they get bigger.
Coffee seedlings grow fast and are very tough. This little guy is just a couple of months old. In a year the seedlings are replanted in the field.
