We got some garlic scapes in our CSA (community-supported agriculture) package last week. The internet told us that they're the green shoots of a young garlic plant; you can only get them in season (June), which is why you probably haven't seen them in your local run-of-the-mill supermarket.

[Reef cross section]: A necklace of breakwaters is proposed along the South Shore to buffer against wave damage, flooding and erosion. We have designed “reef street” micro-pockets of habitat complexity to host finfish, shellfish, and lobsters, and also modeled the breakwater system at a macro scale to understand how and where they can most effectively protect communities.
I really wanted to try and get a city scape portrait myself, so- I got it from a separate location.

SB600 triggered by my newly acquired Cactus V4's. They are a little cheaply built but they get the job done! I'm happy with them especially with the amount of money spent on them. Tungsten filter over the SB600 through a 45" umbrella camera left.
I harvested the garlic scapes (flower buds) from my garlic today and made pesto. Delicious!! It's a good idea to cut the scapes off because it makes the garlic put more energy into the bulb, so you get more garlic. Plus the scapes are absolutely delicious, it's worth growing garlic just for the scapes.
Garic Scape Pesto
- A couple handfuls of garlic scapes
- A couple handfuls of basil
- About 1/2 cup toasted pecans
- About 1/4 cup parmigiano-reggiano cheese
- A few TBSP olive oil
- Sea salt to taste
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until it reaches the desired consistency. Taste as you go, start off with a small amount of oil and add more to taste.

Must confess to being bewildered when I found these curly greens at our natural food mart. Garlic scapes are the immature flower stalks of a garlic plant. In late May or early June the scapes are cut off so the underground bulb will grow bigger. Milder than a garlic clove, the scapes are delicious raw or cooked.
The garlic is putting off scapes in the garden, they're so interesting the way they all curl around.
