Plan: The Tottenville Reach, our proposed Phase 1 Pilot, implements all elements of the project: physical, ecological, and social. It will be used to study ecological benefits, wave reduction impacts, and the economic and recreational potential of Living Breakwaters. It is critical that Phase I be implemented at a scale large enough to establish proof-of-concept, enable this to become a replicable strategy, and have immediate benefit to the residents of Tottenville.
While all of Grenada was in a carnival frenzy a group of us decided to make a little hike up the mountains, Mt. Qua Qua to be exact. It was an awesome experience, one which afforded me the opportunity to enjoy nature in all its glory and grandeur. Despite the muddy and almost impossible terrain we had a wonderful time and I got me some images I really love.

My garlic is putting up scapes, this means it will be ready to harvest soon - MMMMM. The scapes are also very delicious, I'm going to cut a few to eat. They have a nice light garlic flavor, not as strong as garlic cloves, so they're great in stir-fries, eggs and in rice.

Must confess to being bewildered when I found these curly greens at our natural food mart. Garlic scapes are the immature flower stalks of a garlic plant. In late May or early June the scapes are cut off so the underground bulb will grow bigger. Milder than a garlic clove, the scapes are delicious raw or cooked.

Layered Strategy: The LAYERED APPROACH extends across a thick section, creating multiple lines of defense that will not fail singularly and catastrophically. Shallow water ecosystems can be restored to step down risk faced by coastal communities and to rebuild diverse habitats.

I have never seen something like this, a flowering scape of a member of the Capparidaceae family. Northern foothills of Mount Yokolo.

I harvested the garlic scapes (flower buds) from my garlic today and made pesto. Delicious!! It's a good idea to cut the scapes off because it makes the garlic put more energy into the bulb, so you get more garlic. Plus the scapes are absolutely delicious, it's worth growing garlic just for the scapes.
Garic Scape Pesto
- A couple handfuls of garlic scapes
- A couple handfuls of basil
- About 1/2 cup toasted pecans
- About 1/4 cup parmigiano-reggiano cheese
- A few TBSP olive oil
- Sea salt to taste
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until it reaches the desired consistency. Taste as you go, start off with a small amount of oil and add more to taste.
