Candle House is a new residential building in the Leeds Granary Wharf scheme, designed by Carey Jones.
The building was named after the candle and tallow packing warehouses that used to reside on this site, as well as the obvious shapely similarity.
To the right is the the ubiquitous Bridgewater Place.

I harvested the garlic scapes (flower buds) from my garlic today and made pesto. Delicious!! It's a good idea to cut the scapes off because it makes the garlic put more energy into the bulb, so you get more garlic. Plus the scapes are absolutely delicious, it's worth growing garlic just for the scapes.
Garic Scape Pesto
- A couple handfuls of garlic scapes
- A couple handfuls of basil
- About 1/2 cup toasted pecans
- About 1/4 cup parmigiano-reggiano cheese
- A few TBSP olive oil
- Sea salt to taste
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until it reaches the desired consistency. Taste as you go, start off with a small amount of oil and add more to taste.

The flower stalk from garlic bulbs, scape is absolutely delicious! Cut it into 2 inch pieces, parboil for 2 minutes and saute or stir fry with greens or whatever. It tastes like a cross between garlic and asparagus. If we hadn't joined Clagett Farm, a CSA in our area, we would never have been introduced to this wonderful vegetable.

Description:
"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up" - pablo picasso
This project for a family coastal residence is located on a stunning site in eastern Victoria. The design is an investigation of how an idealised conception of "house" is transformed by its context and use. The site has extraordinary qualities: harsh prevailing winds of the roaring forties; sloping site; and sublime panoramic views from cape liptrap to wilson's promontory. The residence required maximum flexibility as a beach home that could accommodate varying sleeping needs - anything from a single guest to burgeoning family summer holidays.
The sectional character of the design adopts an idealised child-like profile of a gabled house as a point of departure. However this reading of the architecture is subverted by a reorientation of the plan. The house twists to accommodate framed views and take advantage of the natural fall of the site, with two wings capturing significant views of the landscape to the east and west. These arms of the building are mediated by an ambiguous space that operates as provisional gallery, entry, veranda, storage, dining, lounging and circulation zone. This contested space engages more directly with the landscape and environment and accommodates shifting patterns of use.
