The Lackawanna’s electrified commuter territory in Northern New Jersey was not the exclusive domain of electrified MU cars. Locomotive-hauled trains reach many points located beyond the farthest reach of the catenary. Steam power for these trains gave way to E8’s, GP7/9’s and RS3’s. In the early 1970’s, new trainsets with GE U34CH power displaced the earlier technology. Here one of those trainsets enters Hoboken Terminal.

I *think* that after 50+ years of taking pictures I have finally internalized the basic requirement to make sure the entire subject is in the frame before taking the picture. At this point in time (Jan 1976), I evidently had not. Apologies.

This is one of those photos that after scanning I realized just how badly I need a new scaner around. The shadows are horrible, especially in areas between midrange shades and shadows. Its like it takes my nice looking prints and turns them into a cheap digital mess. These areas, the dark shadows, in digital imagery are still easily its weakest point in my eyes and is why I've gone back to film. Sad thing is that even the developing place im using for color developing (like most these days) is using a digital process to make the prints from my film... just cant get away from it :)

So, aside from the shadow and color issues there is also the inhumane amount of time spent removing dust and such which is actually inside the scanner now... frustrating. yes. But its what I have available to me at the moment, such is life.

After scanning this I realised it was a summary of Carlisle Citadel in 1985, in this case 3rd April, with 87014 Knight of the Thistle on a WCML passenger service and 25194 on parcels (probably the Euston to Stranraer). On Platform 3 trolleys with sacks of parcels, a Freight Rover minibus and a staff member using the phone, it was just so BR Blue era.
