Workshop participants learned how to save seeds of common vegetables, including "wet seeds" like tomatoes. Community gardeners are encouraged to begin a habit of saving and contributing seeds to the Hayward Seed Lending Library, to share with local gardeners. Workshop participants learned about the advantages of growing locally adapted crops. The workshop was led by Alameda County Master Gardener and Seed Lending Library volunteer Irene Beebe.
This workshop was presented as part of the Hayward Seed Lending Library, sponsored by the Friends of the Hayward Library. The Seed Lending Library operates as a community seed exchange. "Check out" a variety of vegetable and flower seeds to plant in your personal garden. In return, consider harvesting some of the seeds from mature plants for your own use and for sharing with the Seed Lending Library. It's easy to become a member or volunteer - learn more at: hayward-ca.gov/seeds. Join the Hayward Seed Lending Library Club's interactive forum on Facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/haywardseeds/
Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA)
Represents the automotive specialty and performance parts industry. Also a watch dog group to protect us and give us a voice for those in government that would limit our hobby in the name of saving the planet and protecting the environment. Protecting the environment is noble but your tree huggers and your PETA type can go over board.
Before saving, tomato seeds must be processed using a wet processing technique. Seeds are fermented in water for several days until a mold develops, which helps break down anti-sprouting inhibiting enzymes on the tomato seeds, and also helps eliminate disease carried by the tomato seed.
