Monsoonal rains, lush landscape, then a plague of nasty lawn grubs invaded the scene. Mercifully a flock of a hundred or so White Ibis arrived to save the day. No wonder ancient Egyptians exalted the Ibis. Shining white, they flew out of the west. These guys have earned my respect. Pest control – no toxic residue. City dwellers who refer to them as tip trash should do a rethink.

Bees need all the support we can give. One of the best ways is to sow wildflowers and to encourage councils to have cutting plans on road verges and some parkland that compliment their growth.
Without them we would have to cross pollinate flowers by hand for a large percentage of our everyday food!?Without pollination, many interconnected species and processes functioning within our ecosystem will collapse.

That's what the blouse on her dress has written on it. I have no clue what that is supposed to mean.
The script used is terrible. Quite hard to read at a distance. And I wouldn't want strangers getting that close to my children if I wasn't there. That is, of course, if I had children.
Bad concept, this is.

...I did it. I... I killed someone in cold blood. I still can't believe I really did it. The idea makes me sick. I don't know how I can live any further with myself. I feel like an ordinary killer. I'm going crazy here. Why did I even do this? I didn't even know the slave. Am I...am I in love?

A substantial number of people (some say over 1000) took part in a protest march around the West End, raising awareness for the potential fate of one the quaint lanes the West End is known for. This particular lane, Otago Lane, is located a few blocks east of the Glasgow University Union, and boasts several... [read more...]

Grocery store in Ironwood Plaza, Richmond, BC. Owned by Jimmy Pattison, Vancouver's wealthiest businessman.
On the road heading up from Newlyn towards the Red Lion pub and to Mousehole, you see this sign as you turn the corner - "save our fish!"
The sign is lit up during the Christmas period and is a constant reminder to where possible buy locally sourced fish and keep the communities active and alive. I second that.
Keep Our NHS Public. There is a growing chorus of dissatisfaction with the Bill from GPs and Public Health doctors
This is such a difficult review. Having lived in Weslaco (about an hour away from Brownsville) from the late 80's to the mid 90's, and only a few years younger than Mr. Martinez, I really wanted to like this book. And, if I’m completely honest, I do think Mr. Martinez has a wonderful story to tell, but it didn't come through very well in this book. The book should have been shorter and should have been better written. The number of commas used in the book probably outnumbers the number of periods two to one! There were also statements that made me question the integrity of rest of the book: “pantaloons” was used in a sentence instead of the Spanish “pantalones,”; rattlesnakes do not add a rattle each year of their life; the “red tide,” common along the Texas coast, is not caused by shellfish. Things like this, that are easily researched or corrected, make me wonder what else in the story is incorrect, or misrepresented. There are also some beautiful passages, like “I like the water. I am good under the water, and it doesn't scare me in the least, whatever the form or velocity. Its depths and hydraulic violence do not frighten me. Water kills you when you fight it, saves you when you go with it.” I do applaud the author for opening up and providing such a detailed account of his difficult childhood.
This guy cracked me up. He must have been half in/half out of his costume. Note the kilt, the socks, the shoes. Note the "Save the cheerleader, save the world..." t-shirt.

I took a few macro shots of corks today in hopes to get you all to save the corks for Valencia's foundation that raises funds for student scholarships. I wrote more about it on my blog: www.amandakern.com/blog/2009/10/save-the-corks/
If you're interested in participating here's the info on how you can help donate your corks to help students in need:

Of course you can also donate your corks at Valencia's annual Taste for learning event:
And they're holding a silent auction to help raise funds for student scholarships too:
