This was created for the embroidery sampler project in my surface design class. The text is from one of my favorite novels, "Gilead" by Marilynne Robinson. It is taken from a part of the story where one of the characters, after returning from the Civil War, enters his father's church and finds an exquisite needlework hanging above the the alter with these words: "The Lord Our God Is a Purifying Fire".

The scene is a beautiful illustration of one of the book's themes: Christianity and violence/nonviolence. It is also a beautiful illustration of historic needlework samplers and their context.

With this piece I am using the quote to speak to contemporary issues of violence.

(found this old photo so thought I'd upload it)

This is a sampler worked by Selener Samuel aged 8 in 1836. The first synthetic dye was discovered in 1856 so all dyes before this date come from natural sources such as plants. This is why the early samplers are often less vibrant than ones made from 1856 onwards, such as the samplers worked by Martha Barnes.

Samplers were first made in the 1400s or 1500s as a way of remembering different types of stitches or patterns. Over time they evolved into pieces of work made by young girls, proving their knowledge and patience.

The Herbert has over 60 samplers in its collection. With volunteers from NADFAS we have recently completed a project to improve their storage and to make them more accessible. You can see some of the samplers on display at the Herbert in the History Gallery, Connected and in What's in Store.

Perle Cotton 3/2

Warp: ivory & chocolate brown

Weft: light brown

This is a sampler worked by Mary Cotton aged 9 and was finished on 30th April 1836.

The text reads 'Wisdom is the principal thing therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting get understanding'. This is a quote from the Bible, Proverbs 4:7, and highlights that understanding is more important than acquiring things, whether it is possessions, friends or knowledge.

The text reads

John seeth Jesus coming unto him and saith,

Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away

the sin of the world. Remember Death

That about sums up today. And it's making me feel incredibly sad. This is work related crap but I feel like I've been ignored by far too many people and now a situation has gone to hell in an all too predictable way. And I tried to stop it, I did my part.

This fluff sample was sent to me from an etsy seller. It lives on my bulletin board at work.

The sunset on Sunday in Sugar Hill was quite beautiful, puffy clouds and the Franconia Ridge were bathed in a soft pink glow.

Finished the stitch-along with &Stitches! Blogged.

Block of the Month quilt from the Fat Quarter Shop. 2009 Designer Mystery Block of the Month. Uses Glace Collection fabrics from 3 Sisters. 78x78"

I could never have taken on this quilt as a complete package, but a Block a Month was not overwhelming and by the time the finishing kit came, I was so excited to see it completed, that I was happy to do the remaining center star, sashing and borders. Longarm quilting by Laurel Cook finished it beautifully.

Herring Sampler

Västerbotten cheese and dill potatoes. ($12)

Back left to right:

Vodka Lime, Salmon Roe, Dill: Fairly clean. the salmon roe, as you can see, was on its last leg. That made me sad.

Matjes, Red Onion, Sour Cream: Perhaps my favorite. It's a bit sweet (from the red wine and this version probably some added sugar). I like the tangy cream and the use of red onion.

Fore left to right:

Curry, Apple, Chives: Interesting. I like it because the curry masks any potential fishiness the herring might have.

Pickled, Horseradish, Black Pepper: Traditional. This one had a touch of fishiness to it.
