Herring Sampler
Västerbotten cheese and dill potatoes. ($12)
Back left to right:
Vodka Lime, Salmon Roe, Dill: Fairly clean. the salmon roe, as you can see, was on its last leg. That made me sad.
Matjes, Red Onion, Sour Cream: Perhaps my favorite. It's a bit sweet (from the red wine and this version probably some added sugar). I like the tangy cream and the use of red onion.
Fore left to right:
Curry, Apple, Chives: Interesting. I like it because the curry masks any potential fishiness the herring might have.
Pickled, Horseradish, Black Pepper: Traditional. This one had a touch of fishiness to it.
A little of this and little of that...
Fried tofu, Pad Wun Sen, Pad Lad Na, Pad Thai, Eggplant.
Thai Cafe, San Antonio, TX
Pierogies, stuffed cabbage, potato pancake, kielbasa, sauerkraut. Overall, it was just ok, not something we'd get again.
Sampler.Sampler.
Apparteneva a Jane Bostok.

This water sampler is lowered into the ocean and then the sampling bottles around the outside are capped one at a time to collect water samples as the apparatus is pulled slowly upward through the water column.

This was at the relatively new Deschutes brew pub in Portland. We got a sampler tray which was a real treat. I think they are the best brewery in America-- bar none. There is a depth and richness to every one of their beers that no other brewery can match.
This is a sampler worked by Eliza Holman aged 9 years on 6th May, 1845. The text reads 'Idleness is the root of all evil'. Samplers often have biblical quotes or proverbs worked on them.

I deliberately went with lower contrast fabrics with this block. I have a lot of very dark, and a couple of very light, blocks. I need some middle ground to help keep the eye moving over the (eventual) quilt top.
Both prints are Walmart fabrics, and I'm still having some fun playing with fussy-cutting. I've determined that I would NEVER do it for a large quilt, but one off/sampler blocks, I'm okay with fussy-cutting.
This is a sampler worked by Ann Bray aged 10. It was finished 29th March 1826.
The text reads
Go like your heavenly Father feed the poor
And carry comfort to the sick mans door
Think of your heavenly Fathers love to you
And imitate his love in all you do
Mercy shall then your early steps attend
And from the snares of Death your paths defend.
The first verse finishes
Pity the widow, be the orphan's friend
And if you cannot give them, freely lend
The hymn continues
For you the poor man's prayers shall reach heaven
And blessings more than you can ask be given
And when the righteous Judge from heaven descends
Before the world he'll own you for his friends.

Samplers were first made in the 1400s or 1500s as a way of remembering different types of stitches or patterns. Over time they evolved into pieces of work made by young girls, proving their knowledge and patience.
