Helsinki is closed for repairs this summer - same as every other summer, really. Here are a few buildings I found under wraps this past week.
Two large chunks of the main shopping street Aleksanterinkatu have been shrouded for yonks.

Corfe Castle is a fortification standing above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck peninsula in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. The first phase was one of the earliest castles in England to be built at least partly using stone when the majority were built with earth and timber. Corfe Castle underwent major structural changes in the 12th and 13th centuries.
In 1572, Corfe Castle left the Crown's control when Elizabeth I sold it to Sir Christopher Hatton. Sir John Bankes bought the castle in 1635, and was the owner during the English Civil War. His wife, Lady Mary Bankes, led the defence of the castle when it was twice besieged by Parliamentarian forces. The first siege, in 1643, was unsuccessful, but by 1645 Corfe was one of the last remaining royalist strongholds in southern England and fell to a siege ending in an assault. In March that year Corfe Castle was slighted on Parliament's orders. Owned by the National Trust, the castle is open to the public and in 2018 received around 237,000 visitors. It is protected as a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Both the main A351 road from Lytchett Minster to Swanage and the Swanage Railway thread their way through the gap and the village.
The civil parish of Corfe Castle stretches across the width of the Isle of Purbeck, with coasts facing both the English Channel and Poole Harbour. It, therefore, includes sections of both the low-lying sandy heathland that lies to the north of the castle and the rugged Jurassic Coast upland to the south.

I played hooky today and spent the day with the inventor of the egg carton and refrigerator shipping (the same great lady!), the creator of Thanksgiving and Mary Had a Little Lamb (the same lady!), a signer of The Declaration of Independence, the voice of the Phillies, an Arctic explorer, Titanic victims and many many more! I spent the day at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. A cemetery on my visit wish list! One more off the list! I got to half of it. HALF! I missed some major monuments, but there was just no time! If you enjoy Victorian art, you must visit this cemetery…it’s more art garden than graveyard. So pick a nice day…bring along a picnic basket and make the day of it!
Laurel Hill Cemetery is a great cemetery. It would be a great thing if all cemeteries could be like Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA. They get the community involved by having fun events (not just tours) in the cemetery itself. Folktales, music, balls, banquets…all in the cemetery. It’s exactly what the founders wanted. A city park that is open for all. There just happens to be people buried there, that’s all!

Laurel Hill is one of the few cemeteries in the nation to be honored with the designation of National Historic Landmark, a title received in 1998. Numerous prominent people are buried at the Cemetery, including many of Philadelphia’s leading industrial magnates. Names such as Rittenhouse, Widener, Elkins and Strawbridge certainly pique local interests, but Laurel Hill also appeals to a national audience. General Meade and thirty-nine other Civil War-era generals reside here, in addition to six Titanic passengers. As in its earliest days, Laurel Hill’s natural beauty and serenity continue to render it a bucolic retreat nestled within the city’s limits overlooking the Schuylkill River. This beautiful green space is further complemented by the breathtaking art, sculpture and architecture that can be found here. These are just some of the many attributes that render Laurel Hill Cemetery a primary destination for local and national visitors to the City of Brotherly Love.

History
In late 1835, John Jay Smith, a Quaker and librarian, recorded in his diary: “The City of Philadelphia has been increasing so rapidly of late years that the living population has multiplied beyond the means of accommodation for the dead…on recently visiting Friends grave yard in Cherry Street I found it impossible to designate the resting place of a darling daughter, determined me to endeavor to procure for the citizens a suitable, neat and orderly location for a rural cemetery.”
Smith’s very personal experience ultimately had very public implications, as less than one year later, this grieving father founded Laurel Hill Cemetery with partners Nathan Dunn, Benjamin W. Richards and Frederick Brown. When Smith conceived of Laurel Hill, he envisioned something fundamentally different from the burial places that came before it, and the site has continued to hold an important place of distinction as one of the first cemeteries of its kind. Key concepts to Laurel Hill’s founding were that it had to be situated in a picturesque location well outside the city; that it had no religious affiliation; and that it provided a permanent burial space for the dead in a restful and tranquil setting.

Same waterfall, different perspective. Got a little closer as I grew in confidence. What made me click this one was the guy and girl in the pose that were in. This, disregarding the fact that he had just fallen inside the water and could have proven fatal (this made "O" go... "see I told you"!)

A very challenging puzzle to do because of subtle colours and CLC and the push certainly requires steady hands. The street market detail is wonderful.

S.A.M.E., an acronym for Società Accomandita Motori Endotermici, is a Italian agricultural machinery manufacturer. ... The company was founded in 1942 in Treviglio (Bergamo), Italy, by the brothers Francesco and Eugenio Cassani. SAME main products are tractors and front loaders.
Built in 1929, this Art Deco-style skyscraper was designed by Burnham Brothers for the Carbide and Carbon Company to serve as their regional headquarters. The building stands 37 stories and 503 feet (153 meters) tall, with a 23-story lower section that is the same dimensions as the building’s footprint, and a 14-story slender tower above in the center of the eastern end of the building. The building features a black granite base with green and gold terra cotta cladding above, along with gilding and bronze trim. The building is clad in black granite at the base, which extends up to the third floor, which features large brass-trimmed storefronts at the base, a tall doorway with a large glass curtain wall and decorative brass screen over the door, and is flanked by two large brass lantern sconce light fixtures, and features a decorative architrave above with gilded panels, and decorative panels on the side walls flanking the doorway. The base also features window bays on the second and third floors featuring decorative metal spandrels, below metal lettering spelling out Carbide and Carbon Building on both the Michigan Avenue and Wacker Place facades, above which is a band of gilded acroterions, forming the top of the base. Above the base, the building is predominately clad in a chalky pale dark green terra cotta, with one-over-one windows, decorative reliefs, some of which are made of a contrasting tan terra cotta or being gilded, which surround the fifth floor windows and sit below the sixth floor windows, with the facade remaining relatively simple with decorative spandrel panels that feature motifs with volutes up to the spandrel between the 20th and 21st floors, which features decorative contrasting trim at the corners and along the Wacker Place facade, demarcating the start of the top of the lower portion of the building, with the spandrel panels between the 21st and 22nd floors being distinct from those below, and the 23rd floor featuring a non-recessed spandrel, with decorative reliefs in green terra cotta, tan terra cotta, and gilded terra cotta on the facade above the 23rd floor windows, terminating the two outer bays on each side of the Michigan Avenue facade, as well as the building’s north, south, and west facades. Above the 23rd floor, the tower continues to the 35th floor, with corner setbacks featuring chamfered corners and contrasting tan terra cotta and gilded terra cotta, with the two central bays on the east and west facades and three central bays on the north and south facades continuing to the 36th floor, where they also terminate below decorative tan terra cotta and gilded terra cotta trim. The tower gets narrower at the 37th floor, with decorative piers turned 45 degrees from the rest of the building at the corners, projected bays on each face, and decorative made of tan terra cotta and gilded terra cotta ringing the top with decorative reliefs. The top of the building is crowned with a spire, clad in tan terra cotta and gilded terra cotta, and is similar in shape to the top of the tower below, but with narrower and taller proportions, emphasizing its verticality. Inside, the building’s lobby is mostly intact, with the decorative ribbed ceiling, original glass ceiling light fixtures, brass screens around the front entrance doors, marble wall cladding, brass trim and railings, coffered ceilings, fluted pilasters, brass elevator doors, and marble floors being intact and in excellent condition. The building is a contributing structure in the Michigan–Wacker Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1996. The building was adaptively reused and converted into a hotel in 2001-2004, serving first as the Hard Rock Hotel Chicago, before becoming the St. Jane Chicago Hotel in 2018, which closed in 2020. Since 2021, the building has been home to the Pendry Chicago Hotel.
