Peter LENČE, outstanding chef, in his garden at the Škrubi restaurant in the Topla valley near Crna, Carinthia

We came for dinner, three of us.

Six courses, three bottles of wine. Total bill, less than €95. We had:

Rye bread with pumpkin pesto

Ice-cream (!) with grated blue cheese, toasted pumpkin seeds and pumpkin oil. (amazingly this worked, a really good starter).

Dried plums stuffed with blue cheese wrapped in smoked ham with cheese sauce on crackers and garnished with chives

Wild garlic and spinach soup with croutons with garlic and parmesan cheese

A trio of salads - cabbage with nuts, tomatoes with pumpkin oil; greens with potatoes and egg dressed with pumpkin oil; lettuce, apple and raspberries

Pork stuffed with mushrooms (bound with egg), potatoes with onion, cream cheese strudel and vegetables (local mushrooms)

Dried pear in 'noodles' with dried fruit and cinnamon.

Wine - Gonska Bida Cabarnet Sauvignon, & a sweet wine (can't remember!). Oh, and he gave each of us a small bottle of the local poteen.

We called with Peter the next afternoon & this time ended up in his kitchen... inevitably eating and drinking, this time with his friends, whew...

If you're going to Slovenia and you're thinking of going to see Peter (& you should) you should score a bottle of Laphroaig whiskey at Duty Free and you'll have a friend...

Guy food!

From Canadian Living, April/May 1976.

What makes Laura happy is being able to choose from dozens of different really strong rye breads in the supermarket.

Little fish in oil with a smoky taste and very delicate flesh. Best eaten with some chopped onion and a pickle or two. It was great with the German-style rye-bread from Luneburger Bakery.

Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup - doesn't get much better than that.

With caramelized onions, and balsamic vinaigrette. Served with rye bread; I enjoyed their own brown ale with it.

My favourite salad; I order this almost every time I eat at the Inn at Lake on the Mountain; Prince Edward County, Ontario.

Happy Friday! Turkey pastrami Rachel sammie features homemade coleslaw, sauerkraut, Emmentaler cheese and Russian dressing on rye. The coleslaw was made with savoy cabbage and a little red cabbage, Greek yogurt, mayo, white vinegar and lemon. Russian dressing given a spicy twist with horseradish and sriracha.

Sydney International Airport holds a very tasty secret. The Reuben Sandwich by Danks St Depot.

What is The Reuben? It is a layered hot corned beef with sauerkraut, cheese and Russian dressing toasted between slices of rye bread. And comes with hand cut chips. There are not many quick dishes that compare to Reuben. It's just iconic. To try it yourself, take course towards Danks St Depot in Sydney International Airport, land side, before customs.

Cream cheese carrot spread and speck (smoked prosciutto) on pumpernickel rye make a light sandwich. The mild hint of caraway in the bread goes perfectly with the tangy carrot salad and salty speck.

Yes, that is the tail of a pig, having been marinated and slow-cooked, in a "secret sauce" which put me in mind of honey garlic and teriyaki or soy sauce; incredibly tender meat that fell right off the bones, but with a lot of fat - much like eating ribs, except the bones were tiny segmented ones rather than the large rib bones, and more fat as well as a soft skin which I didn't want to eat (if it had been crisp, yes; it was too soft, and esp. with the layer of fat under it, not really desirable to eat, IMO).

With the rye bread, and the warm sauerkraut with caraway seeds and bacon, a decent lunch - not too heavy, but certainly filling enough.

Teriffic dense rye bread with the woodsy cardboardy fragrance of rye. Great for mopping up sauces.

A little slice of Bohemia in the Windsor end of Chapel Street, with it's eclectic selection of cuisines. A great atmosphere, 3 pages of vodkas plus another of vodka cocktails, and hearty soups and stews, Borsch, Vodka & Tears is much more than a vodka bar.

Silly yes, but tasty! ;)

Have a nice Thursday everybody!

Dinner: a simple sandwich; dark rye, mayo, mustard, fat tomato slices, some shredded mozzarella on top (and I even set it in the broiler for a bit to give it some strength to stick together vs, crumbling off with each bite) and lots of leafy lettuce

Fragrance: this little candle came in an awesome pack of citrus scents at the Grocery Outlet... I lit it as I was praying, and even the next day as I sat don to eat a breakfast sandwich... all i could smell/taste was the candle's intensity!

[blogged]

well when it will stop raining outside, I'll get out to do some landscapes..

We made Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato sandwiches for lunch. I toasted rye bread, added sliced cheese and guacamole to my sandwich.

Russian Beetroot and Horseradish Salad

1 cooked beetroot and 1 apple - grated, 1 tbsp fresh grated horseradish, 1 clove crushed garlic, 4-5 parsley sprigs, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp red wine, 2-3 tbsp apple vinegar

This makes cracking toast. The combination of the molasses, cocoa powder and onion seeds really comes into its own when they're toasted and smothered in butter.

(They look the same.)

promenading happily

through the throng of

Just two for dinner last night.

Well, and the dogs of course.

But they don´t get roastbeef, rye bread, tartar sauce and roasted onion.

Or maybe they had a couple of roasted onion snacks. I managed to spill onion all over the kitchen and, even if I did not see any dogs, I swear I heard some munching noises from under the kitchen table.
