Rust Rider was built in two parts ,this way it would be easy to move around . both parts are heavy .It was built from old rusted iron found in junkyard piles as well as flea markets and gas stations . The front wheel spokes are floating ,a spring fron a motorcycle and a lot of old tools make up the handlebars and seat . Michael

Anyway, my first photo is a rusted pole, shot with my 100mm macro lens, this morning. It's at the intersection of 28th St and Army Navy Drive in Arlington, and holds the bus schedule for Route 22B. For you technical folk, I added a small amount of sharpening and bumped the saturation a bit. I kept my XTi on continuous shooting and AI Servo for focusing, and shot 4 frames to make sure I could get one in focus.

The beauty of old buildings is that "ugly" can take on a beautiful meaning - textures, shapes and colours abound.

Just an example of every day challenges as a mechanic in the rust belt.Step 1: use chipping hammer to knock off rust. step 2: drill out remains of cotter pin. step 3: pound socket 3 sizes smaller than original nut onto rusted nut and hope it comes off. step 4: if all else fails use cutting torch to cut nut/stud off. step 5: prepare speech to customer for the increased cost of repairs.

Josefina: The whole reason we were getting together was to discuss decorating and costumes for Halloween.
I popped up to Crosland Hill Airport to the Northern Retro show on Sunday morning, it's only a mile and a bit from home. A gorgeous morning after a poor Saturday, I'd been up on the moors earlier and called in Slawit for breakfast and had already seen one or two motors heading for the show, including Stewart Kaye in his Atkinson tractor unit. I was a bit worried about blown out reflections on such a sunny morning but I didn't do too bad, I wasn't looking for a masterpiece in any case, just some nice colourful shots. I have to admit that, despite my own choice of car, I'm not really a car nut, there were some beautiful cars here though. As someone who routinely flattens old cars, I can tell you that the old British stuff collapses into a pancake shaped pile of rust when it sees the two tonne weight coming whereas a lot of the foreign stuff and all modern motors take quite a few smacks over the head to flatten. Needless to say I didn't get far without seeing lots of locals who I knew to chat with, which I like-being a bit of a gasbag myself....
I went around a few times as cars were rolling up all the time but I decide that I'd seen what I wanted by about 12.30 and shot off home to get shorts and vest on and get out there again. I ended up having a chance encounter with someone I knew in Honley and finished the afternoon in a field photographing a Ford 8210 making round straw bales.
I discovered these large, cut steel plates at the top of our driveway, covered in detritus. They were cut by Michael Rodriques several years ago. Kudis to the elements for the rust.

Walking around Manhattan last autumn I passed this classic bicycle with that certain charm. I guess it comes from the rust.
This is part of a sculpture that is just one of many all along Baseline road. I would imagine the city of Phoenix put them up. Below is a shot of the whole thing. The idea was to plant some sort of vine to grow and cover the entire thing. It looks like an umbrella, or a candy dish. I guess. I haven't seen one of them grown over.
