Discarded drinks cans go rusty if left lying around for a long time. No sunshine today to brighten up the picture.

Rusted iron nails still holding on to a old wooden table

Went for a walk in a nearby industrial / storehouse area to look for rust. Got lots of shots, which made choosing quite hard. In the end, simplicity attracted my eye the most.

LATIN NAME: Aculus schlechtendali (Nalepa)

LIFE CYCLE: Overwinter in a resting stage on host, becoming active when buds open. Several generations are produced per year.

MONITORING: Leaf brushing following the sampling procedure for European red mites.

HOSTS: Apple.

COMMENTS: Apple rust mites resemble other species of rust mites: broad at the front end and tapering to the rear. Typical damage is reddening of leaf margins and upward cupping of the leaf. These mites are an important early-season food source for predatory mites.

BODY LENGTH: Adult - 0.17 mm; Mature nymph - 0.15 mm.

#12. Rust

The cabin of this flatbed truck has been exposed to the elements for probably half a century, or more. It has now taken on a deep rust-coloured sheen, with most of the original paint now long gone. I'm guessing that it was originally made sometime between 1930 – '50. This is one of the pieces of farming machinery left at the former Ravensborne Railway Station in Western Australia. The station was closed in 1925.

There are three images of this truck in my photostream.
