Rust roest is a Dutch expression which means ´idleness rusts the mind´. Literally translated it would be: rest rusts.
In Peso da Régua (Portugal) I noticed some old trains behind the train station. I asked if I were allowed to walk there (in The Netherlands it is strictly forbidden to walk across the rails. The people in the train station laughed, didn´t understand why I was asking that (no problem) and didn´t seem to understand why I wanted to do that anyway.
I was fascinated by those old trains, that seemed to have been here for ages. Grass growing in the engines, rust and flaking paint. Rust roest, literally.

This photo is taken in the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park, a monument of industrial cultural heritage. This is a massive industrial wasteland, measuring 200 hectares, which has been transformed into a multifunctional park.
Former industrial facilities have been converted to a variety of different uses. The former factory buildings have been converted to accommodate cultural and corporate functions; an old gasholder has become a diving centre; the former ore storage bunkers have been turned into alpine climbing gardens, and an extinct blast furnace has been developed into a panoramic tower.
In my opinion a great project where industrial heritage is saved for the future. For photographers it is a Walhalla as well: so many beautiful structures, buildings and lovely ´paintings´ of rust and flaked paint. Rust roest, literally.
