This Sunday I went to Mexilhoeira beach by the end of the day. An (almost) new moon tide and a fogy weather, kept most people of the beach, leaving an endless and almost immaculate extension of sand for me and my surf rods. By sunset this runner and I where the only souls on sight : )

~another view of this beach on high tide here

The weather was terrible the whole weekend, so I had to delete most of the photos I took. Too bad.

Photos from the 13th Human Race

I didn’t have any time, so just pulled out my flash and started to snap some shots from the ground and power lines be damned! Sometimes I got lucky like in this shot. (If you are wondering, I am using the D70’s commander mode to remotely trigger a flash that I placed on the ground next to me).

I had forgotten that my camera was set at ISO800 (argh). Lucky for me the D70 has a flash sync speed of 1/500 of a second or it would have been a total disaster.

I removed some of the annoyances (cones, signs, power lines) from the photo. I did a blend with the normal output because Adobe Camera RAW’s default settings blew out the highlights on the runners skin.

After that, I blended with a saturation to brightness digital filter to create a stylisting effect.

2012 Virgin London Marathon

Dromeas, also called The Runner, is made of individual pieces of glass stacked atop each other to take the blurred shape of a runner in motion. Thousands of sharp, jagged pieces of glass form the sculpture.

The running figure is the work of Costas Varotsos, who began working on it in 1988 and didn’t finish until 1994. It was originally erected at Omonia Square, but it was later moved because people grew concerned construction and the vibrations from the underground metro would cause it to shatter or topple.

It’s a fitting sculpture within a city with so much running history—Athens was, after all, the final destination of Pheidippides’s famous run from the Battle of Marathon. But unfortunately, the artwork wasn’t met with unanimous appeal. Though some heralded the innovative sculpture, others were less-than-pleased with its unusual appearance.

Storm Runner is an Intamin-built[1] steel launched roller coaster at Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania. It is located in the Pioneer Frontier section of the park, right across from Sidewinder and above the Trailblazer. It was constructed in 2004 and was the third Intamin Accelerator Coaster. It reaches a height of 150 ft (46 m) and catapults riders from 0 to 72 mph (116 km/h) in 2 seconds. It features a top hat and three inversions, a dual loading station and a magnetic braking system. It was built to interact with three other Hersheypark rides: the Dry Gulch Railroad, the Monorail, and the Trailblazer.

Storm Runner is the first accelerator coaster to utilize over-the-shoulder restraints and the first to have a dual-loading station with switch tracks. Likewise, it was also the first accelerator coaster to feature inversions; Kanonen at Liseberg was the second.

When Storm Runner first opened in 2004, the queue line would often be extended with ropes due to the ride's popularity. In 2005, the park added an overflow queue line located next to the Trailblazer's first drop.

In October, when Hersheypark is decorated in a Halloween theme (Hersheypark in the Dark), Stormrunner is dubbed Ghost Runner.

Ride experience

As the train leaves the station, it moves slowly onto the launch platform. As it is rolling to its launch, a pre-recorded sound of a heartbeat is heard, and after a few seconds, the trains rolls back as the magnetic brakes drop and riders hear a voice saying "Now get ready, here we go", then the train launches from 0–72 mph in 2 seconds (just when the voice says the word "go"). Riders are photographed by the on-ride camera a short way down the launch track. In 2004 during the wait, riders would listen to a heartbeat then a countdown from five before hearing the voice. After traveling down the take-off runway and hitting a speed of 72 mph, the train climbs straight up the 150-foot-tall "top hat" element providing some airtime, and back down again, dropping 180 feet, reaching the top speed of 75 mph down the side of a hill leading down toward Spring Creek. The train next climbs and rolls left through the first-ever "Cobra Loop". The train then speeds up and into a straight-line barrel roll which then leads to the first-ever "Flying Snake Dive" which consists of a heartline roll followed by a half Immelman roll that makes a vertical plunge back down toward Spring Creek. The train shoots back up and to within 10 feet under the park's Monorail track, over a portion of the TrailBlazer, quickly twists to the left and to the right, then back above the treetops for one last dose of airtime. The train hits the magnetic brakes at fast speed, jerking riders forward, and then slowly glides back into the station. The duration of the ride is 34 seconds from launch to the brakes.

Launch system

To launch the trains, Storm Runner utilizes a system invented by Intamin that launches the trains using hydraulics. This system is similar to the propulsion on a locomotive wheel except it doesn't spin completely. The inner diameter of the wheel is attached to the hydraulic actuator and the outer radius of the wheel is then attached to the launch mechanism. The outer diameter of the wheel amplifies the energy output from the slow actuator stroke creating a high speed launch in a matter of seconds. A pusher car is attached to the launch mechanism and the train attaches to this pusher car prior to launch. Once the train reaches the end of the launch area, the pusher car disengages and gravity does the rest.

The launch track features magnetic brake fins. These slow down the car if the launch is unsuccessful (also known as a rollback). Storm Runner does not have a very tall top hat like Top Thrill Dragster and Kingda Ka, and usually does not have a problem clearing it. After a successful (although slightly rocky) first season, the ride's launch system is generally considered reliable.

The SPAR Great Ireland Run 2013 was held in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, Ireland on Sunday 14th April 2013 at 13:10 and 13:30 respectively. The Great Ireland Run is now probably the largest 10KM running event in Ireland. The race also incorporates the AAI National 10km Championships. This category is for club athletes in Ireland only. However, there is also the main field race where anyone, regardless of being with an athletic club or not, can enter and race. The elite women and club women's race started at 13:10 whilst the male club and main field event started at 13:30. The race starts on Chesterfield Avenue and takes a clockwise route - first over to the Blackhorse Avenue sid of the park, crossing Chesterfield avenue again. The race then descends down the Kyber pass before the runners must take the challenge of the famous S-Bends on the Chapelizod side including a steep climb at 7KM. Finally the race winds its way around the Furry Glen, before finishing very close to the starting point of the race.

These photographs are taken at the 7 KM marker on Chapelizod Hill. They are from the time period 13:35 (leading elite women) until all waves have passed this point (approximately 14:42). There are no start or finish line photographs.

I really enjoyed taking these photographs. It is the first time in a long time where I have been able to photograph a race I was not participating in. It was a really great experience. Despite the tough course and the horrible head winds I got so many nods and "hellos" from hundreds of runners I knew there and from thousands of others I have yet to get to know ;-) It is a really great event.

I ran the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set!

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

If you want to contribute something for these images?

We do not charge for these images. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the image(s) you request are good enough that you would ordinarily pay for their purchase we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible.
