I spent a long weekend on rum walking, bothying, camping sharing rotten chat with friends and fighting the the dreaded rum midges. Without doubt, they have to be the worst, most ferocious midges i have ever encountered! I would definitely recommend a visit - though take some DDT! if you don't believe me, here's a we vid i took that my friend posted on twitter. the swear words have been edited out ;-)

„Rüm Hart, Klaar Kimming“ ist das friesische Wappenmotto: „Großes Herz, weiter Horizont“. Die Kimme ist der magische Ort, an dem sich Meer und Himmel berühren.

Wadi Rum (Arabic: وادي رم Wādī Ramm, also Wādī al-Ramm), known also as the Valley of the Moon (Arabic: وادي القمر Wādī al-Qamar), is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan, near the border to Saudi Arabia and about 60 km (37 mi) to the east of the city of Aqaba. With an area of 720 km2 (280 sq mi) it is the largest wadi in Jordan.

Several prehistoric civilizations left petroglyphs, rock inscriptions and ruins in Wadi Rum. Today it is a tourist attraction, offering guided tours, hiking and rock climbing. The Wadi Rum Protected Area has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011.*

The beach at Laig Bay

There are a lot of sea caves around Rum but not many are easily accessible except from the sea. We had to wait for the tide to go out here to get round a small headland on foot. The red rocks are the billion year old Torridonean sandstone.

People have called Wadi Rum home since prehistoric times. It was once inhabited by the Nabataeans, who left their mark in the form of temples, inscriptions and rock drawings. Khazali Canyon is famous for Nabataean etchings featuring humans and animals. In the 1970s, archaeologists excavated one of the most famous temples in the area, the Nabataean Temple. The Bedouins who live here now have been roaming this land of dry sands and extreme temperatures for many years, though now with more modern comforts.

Rum-running, or bootlegging, is the illegal business of smuggling alcoholic beverages where such transportation is forbidden by law. The term rum-running is more commonly applied to smuggling over water; bootlegging is applied to smuggling over land.

Smuggling usually takes place to circumvent taxation or prohibition laws within a particular jurisdiction.

Given the rather unfavorable weather conditions, I felt quite discouraged before starting to edit the photos. But in the end, I’m glad with how the series from Eigg came together. It’s a mix of somewhat atmospheric images—at least that’s how I’d describe them—and some more classical compositions like this one. As always, I’ll be uploading them gradually on Flickr.

Wall art by Paul Curtis. This tribute to Red Rum is on the end of a building overlooking the Promenade in Southport. Red Rum was the famous race horse that was stabled and trained in Southport by Ginger McCain. He could often be seen training on the beach in Ainsdale. He was winner of the Grand National race at Aintree 3 times 1973, 1974 and 1977.

Wadi Rum, also known as The Valley of the Moon, is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan 60 km (37 mi) to the east of Aqaba; it is the largest wadi in Jordan. Wadi Rum is Arabic for "Roman Valley", or "Valley of the Rûm", as the Greeks (or East Romans) were called in the early Byzantine era by Arab people, probably referring to Christian Byzantine monastic or ascetic communities in the area, for which they were also known as "monks of the desert", before the expansion of the Rashidun Caliphate.

Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures–including the Nabateans–leaving their mark in the form of rock paintings, graffiti, and temples.

In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who passed through several times during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. In the 1980s one of the rock formations in Wadi Rum was named "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" after Lawrence's book penned in the aftermath of the war, though the 'Seven Pillars' referred to in the book have no connection with Rum.

The area is centered on the main valley of Wadi Rum. The highest elevation in Jordan is Jabal Umm ad Dami at 1,840 m (6,040 ft) high, located 30 kilometres south of Wadi Rum village.

Jabal Ram or Jebel Rum (1,734 metres (5,689 ft) above sea level) is the second highest peak in Jordan and the highest peak in the central Rum, rising directly above Rum valley, opposite Jebel um Ishrin, which is possibly one metre lower.

Wadi Rum feels like the planet Mars, but with Camels. This picture was taken close after sun rise where I climbed a big boulder and I saw a group of camels.
