Ruby Jackson, Executive Administrative Specialist in the Dean’s Office for the College of Education, has made significant contributions to the university throughout her 21 years of employment at USF. Ruby began as an Administrative Assistant and was promoted to her current role in 2006.
Ruby’s contributions to the College of Education and the university itself are innumerable. She is one of the unsung heroines working behind the scenes to make sure the more visible academic teaching, research, and service provision continue seamlessly for our students. Ruby is one of the staff members who is consistently asked to serve as a reviewer or pilot team member. Her knowledge, skills and willingness to give meaningful feedback are valued widely and contribute to the increased efficiency and cost savings for individual units within the college. She is especially mindful of issues of diversity and culture and how they may impact employee and supervisor perceptions of situations, and she often mediates to help both sides find multiple perspectives. Ruby is solution-oriented and understands the realities of budget constraints. She has a wonderful balance of being direct and evaluative while at the same time communicating support and caring for individuals facing difficult circumstances. Ruby was instrumental in creating a protocol for faculty search plans that not only met University and DEO requirements, but that was practical and user friendly, and has since been adopted by other colleges.
In a letter of support for Ruby’s nomination, Harold Keller, Interim Dean for the College of Education said, “Attributes associated with her performance include dedication, fair, equitable, advocate, problem-solver, direct, supportive and caring, all attributes meriting an outstanding award.”

Ruby shares the same name as my first car 🚗. She's absolutely breathtaking, and is most definitely my favourite doll from series one.
Strobist: Three 580EXII on stands surrounding the feeder at 1/64 -1/3 at around 10" away. Waited until the ambient dropped well below the flash exposure, 1/250 @ f/11, ISO 100 to knock the background to black. This left me about 10 minutes to shoot, triggering with Pocket Wizards.

I mined this ruby in Franklin, North Carolina, had it cut and mounted in a gold ring.
You can see the imperfections in the ruby with your eye.

Ruby in her prom dress. Photos taken in Downtown Spartanburg, Hatcher Gardens, and at a neighbor's private garden.
A flash of green and red, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is eastern North America’s sole breeding hummingbird. These brilliant, tiny, precision-flying creatures glitter like jewels in the full sun, then vanish with a zip toward the next nectar source. Feeders and flower gardens are great ways to attract these birds, and some people turn their yards into buzzing clouds of hummingbirds each summer. Enjoy them while they’re around; by early fall they’re bound for Central America, with many crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight.
