the reflection in the window of the old house of the modern house that replaced it. both are abandoned. between the two runs a small creek, in places just narrow enough to jump. we came upon the site in the early morning, leaving pullman. the sun just coming up over the hills, casting soft light across the grass, white with frost. over the course of two hours, sunlight and shadows illuminated a treasure trove of two histories, overlapping and intertwined. the old and abandoned, the older and abandoned. the place desolate, nothing for miles and rarely a passing car. the creek, a cluster of trees, the old house the typical and the ideal for a pioneer homestead. that memory was quieter, the ground more marked by the life there had been in the in the more modern house - a boxy powder blue little thing all boarded up. antenna on the chimney, cracked television by the doorstep, old dodge out front a light blue a shader green than the house and grown into weeds. a birdhouse against the wall out back and over it, a window air conditioner still in place. a rusted metal clothesline and the frame of a swing set, swings long gone, by the original place. the wooden structure, it's front door padlocked and slightly ajar, had long become a shed. through the missing panes of glass, plastic lawn chairs and a banana seat bike.

Downhill on Rt. 389, in front of the dam. Dust and gravel!
Driving south on Rt. 389 in Quebec, we turned a corner and there was the Manic-5 dam (also called the Daniel-Johnson Dam), on the Manicouagan River. It was totally unexpected, though we did have a reservation at the Motel de l'Énergie, just south of the dam.
Of course, this necessitated another delay, as we decided to stay in the morning and do the wonderful tour of the dam.
Traveling south from Labrador City NL to Baie-Comeau QC.
