Saturday 14th of August 2021 and a trip to the closest Cathedral to me in Portsmouth. Portsmouth Cathedral was built in 1180AD and paid for my a local wealthy Norman merchant. It has a very interesting history. In 1449AD the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors so the cathedral was closed for a time and the people of Portsmouth excommunicated! The Cathedral is just a short walk from the closest beach at the Hot Walls.

By Eve M. Kahn

In 1928, a department-store owner in Meridian, MS, set up a time capsule. He didn't mean to; he just intended to briefly close down a 1,000-seat theater inside his store – for complicated and intriguing business reasons. But the room – gloriously ornamented by a renowned theater architect – ended up shuttered, moldering and frozen in the Jazz Age until last year.

The Riley Center, Meridian, MS ~ Project

In 1890, a pair of German-Jewish half-brothers, Israel Marks and Levi Rothenberg, built Meridian's first major department store and first opera house. Sherman's troops had razed the town in 1864, but the inhabitants managed to rebuild quickly and even expand, partly because five converging railroad lines brought tourists and freight traffic to Meridian.

Marks and Rothenberg set out to attract locals and tourists with high-style architecture. They hired Swedish immigrant architect G.M. Torgenson to fill a downtown block with a five-story Romanesque Revival store, its brick and stucco shell topped in turrets and mansard roofs. The storekeepers set aside a quarter of the building for the Grand Opera House, designed by J.B. McElfatrick & Sons, which had offices in New York City and St. Louis. Between the 1850s and 1920s, the McElfatricks (pronounced MAC-el-fat-ricks) produced some 400 theaters nationwide, including opera houses for New York City and Philadelphia. (Only about 25 of the firm's works survive.)

August 2021 trip to Portsmouth Cathedral. The cathedral is in Old Portsmouth & was built in 1180 making it 845 years old as I type. The Cathedral was paid for by a local & very wealthy Norman merchant.

It has a very interesting history. In 1449 the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors in a dispute over pay, so it was closed for 59 years & the people of Portsmouth excommunicated! It reopened in 1508. In 1591 Queen Elizabeth I of England worshiped there. I took this photo with my Canon DSLR Camera. I have included the link to the Cathedrals Wiki page below

Mdina the ancient capital city of Malta. The Silent City with St Paul's Cathedral as its centre of worship. Mdina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mdina

The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Swithun, commonly known as Winchester Cathedral, is the cathedral of the city of Winchester, England, and is among the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Winchester and is the mother church for the ancient Diocese of Winchester. It is run by a dean and chapter, under the Dean of Winchester.

The cathedral as it stands today was built from 1079 to 1532 and is dedicated to numerous saints, most notably Swithun of Winchester. It has a very long and very wide nave in the Perpendicular Gothic style, an Early English retrochoir, and Norman transepts and tower. With an overall length of 558 feet (170 m), it is the longest medieval cathedral in the world. With an area of 53,480 square feet (4,968 m2), it is also the sixth-largest cathedral by area in the UK, surpassed only by Liverpool, St Paul's, York, Westminster (RC) and Lincoln.

Though churches were recorded in Winchester as early as 164, the first Christian church can be traced back to c. 648, when King Cenwalh of Wessex built a small, cross-shaped building just north of the present building. This building, known as the Old Minster, became the cathedral for the new Diocese of Winchester in 662, a vast area stretching from the English Channel to the River Thames, the bishopric having been transferred from Dorchester on Thames, Oxfordshire by Bishop Wine. The design of this early church cannot be confirmed, for no trace other than ground plan exists today, but Wolstan mentions a gateway tower situated some distance from the west end. Wine died in c. 672, but one of his later successors, Swithun, would become one of the most famous Bishops of Winchester.

Whether Swithun himself oversaw any expansion of the Old Minster is unknown, but it is recorded in Acta Sanctorum that from 963 to 984, Bishop Æthelwold greatly expanded the church, the works being finished by the following Bishop, Alphege. The church was rededicated in 993, and consisted of a central tower, north and south aisles, transepts, crypt and an apse, and was briefly the largest church in Europe. Also on the site was the New Minster, in direct competition with the neighbouring Old Minster. The New Minster was begun by Alfred the Great but completed in 901 by his son Edward the Elder. These two monasteries existed side by side, the monks becoming virtually intertwined with one another. Swithun's body, which according to his wishes had been buried in the graveyard outside the church, was brought inside and housed in a magnificent shrine.

The construction of the cathedral of Piacenza, high example of Romanesque architecture, was begun in 1122 and completed in 1233 over the ruins of the former church of Santa Giustina, destroyed by an earthquake in 1117. Equipped with a gabled façade, the bottom in red Verona marble and in sandstone in the upper with blind galleries, it is divided into three areas withh semi-cylindrical pillars and it is moved by loggias at half height. It is enriched by a great rose window and three inputs with statues. Below, between the two columns and the main door, two lines of stone were made to show the local unit of length.

The structure of the church is on a Latin cross and it is extend, unique case in Italy, on the hall with three naves intersected by imposing a tripartite transept.

The bell tower was built a century later and in 1341 at the peak there was placed a bronze angel, affectionately called "Angil by Dom ", like a symbol of the city.

Haapsalu Episcopal Castle (Haapsalu piiskopilinnus) is a castle with St. Nicolas cathedral founded in the thirteenth century as the seat of the Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek (Saare-Lääne). The castle was used as a defensive building, so constraction went on throughout several centuries, with the architecture changing according to the development of weapons. The cathedral was built in 1260 and belongs to the transition period from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. In 1710, Estonia fell under Russian rule and the walls were partially demolished, turning the castle in effect into ruins. In 1940 the church was closed by the Soviet goverment. During World War II, services were continued, but in the spring of 1944 hooligans broke into the church and destroyed the altar with the altarpiece, the organ, the chairs and the windows. After the war for some time it was used for storing grain, even plans for turning it into a swimming-pool were made. In 1992 a Mother’s Altar to commemorate Estonian mothers killed during the Soviet occupation was consecrated by the sculptor Hille Palm. Now this the cathedral is open and in castle located museum. Here you can learn amazing historical facts, the mystical love-story of the White Lady and a funny example of how even the strict laws can be hacked 😉 #belmova in comment below⤵ *** #estonia #eesti #haapsalu #haapsalucastle #architecture #building #beautiful #oldbuilding #ruins #church #castle #xiiicentury #romanesque #Romanesquearchitecture #gothic #gothicarchitecture #estonianarchitecture #estonianhistory #BishopricofÖselWiek #ÖselWiek #SaareLääne

Around the year 1180, Jean de Gisors, a wealthy Norman merchant and Lord of the Manor of Titchfield, gave land in his new town of Portsmouth to the Augustinian canons of Southwick Priory so that they could build a chapel "to the Glorious Honour of the Martyr Thomas of Canterbury, one time Archbishop, on (my) land which is called Sudewede, the island of Portsea" It was given so that they could build a chapel dedicated to the honour of St Thomas of Canterbury, who was assassinated and martyred ten years earlier. This chapel was to become, in turn, a parish church in the 14th century and then a cathedral in the 20th century.

Spoleto Cathedral is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia and the principal church of the Umbrian city of Spoleto, in Italy. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church is essentially an example of Romanesque architecture, with a nave and two side-aisles crossed by a transept, although subsequently modified.
