The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Swithun, commonly known as Winchester Cathedral, is the cathedral of the city of Winchester, England, and is among the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Winchester and is the mother church for the ancient Diocese of Winchester. It is run by a dean and chapter, under the Dean of Winchester.
The cathedral as it stands today was built from 1079 to 1532 and is dedicated to numerous saints, most notably Swithun of Winchester. It has a very long and very wide nave in the Perpendicular Gothic style, an Early English retrochoir, and Norman transepts and tower. With an overall length of 558 feet (170 m), it is the longest medieval cathedral in the world. With an area of 53,480 square feet (4,968 m2), it is also the sixth-largest cathedral by area in the UK, surpassed only by Liverpool, St Paul's, York, Westminster (RC) and Lincoln.
History
Though churches were recorded in Winchester as early as 164, the first Christian church can be traced back to c. 648, when King Cenwalh of Wessex built a small, cross-shaped building just north of the present building. This building, known as the Old Minster, became the cathedral for the new Diocese of Winchester in 662, a vast area stretching from the English Channel to the River Thames, the bishopric having been transferred from Dorchester on Thames, Oxfordshire by Bishop Wine. The design of this early church cannot be confirmed, for no trace other than ground plan exists today, but Wolstan mentions a gateway tower situated some distance from the west end. Wine died in c. 672, but one of his later successors, Swithun, would become one of the most famous Bishops of Winchester.
Whether Swithun himself oversaw any expansion of the Old Minster is unknown, but it is recorded in Acta Sanctorum that from 963 to 984, Bishop Æthelwold greatly expanded the church, the works being finished by the following Bishop, Alphege. The church was rededicated in 993, and consisted of a central tower, north and south aisles, transepts, crypt and an apse, and was briefly the largest church in Europe. Also on the site was the New Minster, in direct competition with the neighbouring Old Minster. The New Minster was begun by Alfred the Great but completed in 901 by his son Edward the Elder. These two monasteries existed side by side, the monks becoming virtually intertwined with one another. Swithun's body, which according to his wishes had been buried in the graveyard outside the church, was brought inside and housed in a magnificent shrine.

This is the Union Station Hotel in today's Nashville, TN but when it originally opened on October 8, 1900, it was Union Station - Railroad Station and was the center of travel for all who passed through the Southeastern U.S. and Middle Tennessee. A few notable facts about this building include:
- Construction began on Aug. 1, 1898
- The Train Shed was the largest unsupported span in America, housing up to 10 full trains at once
- Listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on December 30, 1969 and later designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1977
- The track level once held two alligator ponds

View of Église Saint-Symphorien, the parish church of the village / small town of Azay-le-Rideau (the département of Indre-et-Loire, located in the Centre-Val de Loire region in central France), from the courtyard of the grounds of the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, on a mostly clear late afternoon in mid-October.
While there was a church on the site by the 6th century, and parts of the facade date back to the 11th century (Romanesque period) with some possible Carolingian (9th century) decorative elements, it was considerably rebuilt during the 12th century and enlarged in the 16th century. It is located on the grounds of the château, whose surviving building is a small gem of the Renaissance period primarily built between 1518 and 1527. As is characteristic of the area of the Touraine, a historical, pre-Revolutionary province, the building is of pale, silvery-grey to near-white tufa limestone (in French, tuffeau or tufeau).
While broadly considered part of the "Loire Valley" or Val de Loire, Azay-le-Rideau actually lies along the River Indre, which is a tributary of the Loire itself. Several mills were established in and near the village. The village is probably best known for the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, a small gem of the Renaissance period primarily built between 1518 and 1527. The château is surrounded by the Indre, which forms a natural moat, as well as a garden and parkland. Azay-le-Rideau is located within Le Parc naturel régional Loire-Anjou-Touraine (the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park).
(Information about the church from the Michelin Châteaux of the Loire Green Guide (Watford, Herts., UK: Michelin Travel Partner, 2015 printing), Mérimée (reference number PA00097549), an architectural heritage database of the Ministère de la culture, and Wikipedia, last consulted 18 August 2018.)

Around the year 1180, Jean de Gisors, a wealthy Norman merchant and Lord of the Manor of Titchfield, gave land in his new town of Portsmouth to the Augustinian canons of Southwick Priory so that they could build a chapel "to the Glorious Honour of the Martyr Thomas of Canterbury, one time Archbishop, on (my) land which is called Sudewede, the island of Portsea" It was given so that they could build a chapel dedicated to the honour of St Thomas of Canterbury, who was assassinated and martyred ten years earlier. This chapel was to become, in turn, a parish church in the 14th century and then a cathedral in the 20th century.
This place used to pump all the sewage out of London during the victorian age. It was built after the "Great Stink" of 1858 and was operational up until the 1950's. During it's time it was an engineering marvel as well as featuring some beautiful ironwork that you can see in the Octagon here. It was derelict for decades but has been partially restored recently and you can see one of the steam pumps in operation on one of their open days.

In 1449AD the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors so the cathedral was closed and the people of Portsmouth excommunicated!

Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, currently Justin Welby, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury.
Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the 12th century and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174.

This grand stretch of Embassy Row in Washington, D.C. showcases a dazzling display of late 19th-century Romanesque Revival architecture. Built from rugged green-hued sandstone with red clay tile roofs, these richly detailed homes blend medieval fantasy with Gilded Age opulence. Look closely, and you'll find Gothic arches, turrets, intricate stone carvings, and wrought-iron balconies—a level of craftsmanship rarely seen today.
These homes, originally built as private mansions for D.C.’s elite, now house embassies, institutions, and organizations, carrying forward a tradition of international diplomacy. The sunlight striking the textured stone brings out its golden undertones, while the bare trees frame the façade, offering a clear view of the elaborate architectural ornamentation.
Photographed in the soft morning light of winter, the scene captures the enduring charm of D.C.'s historic residential blocks—where every building tells a story of wealth, ambition, and the timeless appeal of old-world craftsmanship.
Another photo of beautiful Winchester Cathedral. I do love this grand old Cathedral which is only about 25 miles away from me. I took these photos with my Nikon camera

Originally built in the 10th century, a fire dating back to 1142 brought about the Romanesque interior of St. George's Basilica seen today in Prague. The frescoes and wall paintings are credited to the well known, Baroque era Czech painter Václav Vavřinec Reiner and were painted in the early 1700s. Though considerably smaller than many churches in Prague, St. George's is the oldest church in the Hradcany Castle District and the 2nd oldest church in Prague; it's intimate setting is used primarily for concerts.

The wonderful Natural History Museum in London. It would take a few days or even weeks to look around the museum properly.
Captured at golden hour, this striking Romanesque Revival mansion stands proudly at a busy corner of Washington, D.C.'s Dupont Circle neighborhood. Built in the late 19th century, the red brick exterior is framed by intricate green trim and a round turret tower, nodding to a time when craftsmanship and grandeur defined the city’s wealthiest homes.
This historic structure once served as a private residence and now often houses embassies, cultural institutions, or offices. The vibrant urban energy is on full display: pedestrians cross the iconic rainbow crosswalk, a symbol of Dupont’s LGBTQ+ pride and activism. The playful mix of historic architecture, community spirit, and modern city life perfectly encapsulates what makes this part of D.C. so dynamic and beloved.

Portsmouth Cathedral is very close to where I live, so I have visited it many times. The remains of the sailors taken from the Mary Rose when she was lifted from the seabed just off Portsmouth are all in a tomb inside the cathedral. Portsmouth Cathedral was built in 1180AD and paid for by a local wealthy Norman merchant. It has a very interesting history. In 1449AD the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors so the cathedral was closed for a time and the people of Portsmouth excommunicated! The Cathedral is just a short walk from the closest beach at the Hot Walls.

Praha-Krteň, Church of Saints John and Paul
Romanesque Church of St. John and Paul in Krteň is mentioned as a parish church in 1352. The village is mentioned in 1434 as the property of Czech kings. During the Thirty Years' War, the village was completely destroyed by Swedish troops, who marched on Prague to loot the collections of Rudolf II. and bring them to Sweden, which they did. The village was then not restored and in 1667 the church with a cemetery was attached to Chrášťany. In 1890, the church was rebuilt in neo-Romanesque style according to the design of A. Živný. Then the vault was replaced by a coffered ceiling, the north nave was raised and the tower was rebuilt.
A Romanesque window has been preserved in the chancel and on the east wall inside a late Romanesque mural from the end of the 13th century. They represent the Baptism of Christ, Sacrifice in the Temple, Joseph's Dream, the Church Teacher, and the symbols of the evangelists. The paintings were restored in 1952 by the academic painter Miroslav Terš, who also explained the meaning of the depiction. The furnishings are mostly pseudo-Romanesque, only in the side wall the original altar with a painting by J. Heřman from 1890 was left during the reconstruction. There are tombstones from the 18th century in the side walls and from the outside.
