Spoleto Cathedral is the principal church of the Umbrian city of Spoleto, in Italy. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The church is essentially an example of Romanesque architecture, with a nave and two side-aisles crossed by a transept, although subsequently modified. It was built from the second half of the twelfth century after the city had been devastated by Frederick Barbarossa's troops.

Andorra has more than 60 churches. See them all on 1 page >>> www.lutz-meyer.com/reise/0809and-churches.htm

St David's Cathedral (in Welsh Eglwys Gadeiriol Tyddewi) which is situated in St Davids (the smallest City in Britain) in the county of Pembrokeshire, on the most westerly point of Wales.

The Cathedral stands on the site of a 6th-century monastery founded by Dewi (David), a Celtic Christian monk, who later became St David the Patron Saint of Wales. Due to the relics of St David, the cathedral was a major pilgrimage destination throughout the Middle Ages.

In the 6th Century St David was reputedly born on a cliff top on the South-West Wales coast during a fierce storm. The site of David’s birth is marked by the ruin of a tiny ancient chapel close to a holy well and the more recent 18th century chapel dedicated to his mother Non can still be seen near St. David’s Cathedral.

The Celtic saint soon became famous for his learned preaching, devotion to God, and extreme asceticism (he ate only bread and herbs, drank only water, and regularly stood in cold water for long periods). He was nicknamed Dewi Ddyfrwr, David the Water Drinker.

Many legends have circulated about David, including one alleging that King Arthur was his uncle and that among the "prophecies of Merlin" was a prediction that St David would found a bishopric in Wales. In another legend, St. Gildas foretold David's birth when a pregnant woman came into the church as he was preaching. He was struck dumb, and on regaining his power of speech, predicted that she would give birth to a son "with a greater proportion of the divine spirit than has ever fallen to the share of a preacher."

Life in the monastic community that formed under David's leadership was a simple one of prayer, study, and hard labor. Soon a bishopric was established at the site (according to tradition, David was the first bishop), making the monastic church a cathedral. In the centuries that followed, St. David's Cathedral suffered more than a dozen attacks by Vikings and other marauders. Bishops of St. David's were killed in 999 and 1080.

In 1081, William the Conqueror visited St Davids to pray and, probably, to explore its strategic benefits due to its proximity to Ireland. The cathedral was safe under Norman rule, but at the cost of its original Welsh character. The Normans regarded their own form of Christianity as superior to the Celtic way, and soon set out to reform it. This was probably the motivation behind the Latin Life of David written by a bishop's son in 1090, which reports that David visited Jerusalem and was consecrated bishop by the patriarc.

It was founded in 1148 under the patronage of Alfant, bishop of Cavaillon, and Ramon Berenguer II, Count of Barcelona, Count of Provence, by Cistercian monks who came from Mazan Abbey in the Ardèche. Temporary huts housed the first community of impoverished monks. By 1152 the community already had so many members that Sénanque was able to found Chambons Abbey, in the diocese of Viviers.

The young community found patrons in the seigneurs of Simiane, whose support enabled them to build the abbey church, consecrated in 1178. Other structures at Sénanque followed, laid out according to the rule of Cîteaux Abbey, mother house of the Cistercians. Among its existing structures, famed examples of Romanesque architecture, are the abbey church, cloister, dormitory, chapter house and the small calefactory, the one heated space in the austere surroundings, so that the monks could write, for this was their scriptorium. A refectory was added in the 17th century, when some minimal rebuilding of existing walls was undertaken, but the abbey is a remarkably untouched survival, of rare beauty and severity: the capitals of the paired columns in the cloister arcades are reduced to the simplest leaf forms, not to offer sensual distraction.

The abbey church is in the form of a tau cross with an apse projecting beyond the abbey's outer walls. Somewhat unusually, its liturgical east end faces north, as the narrow and secluded valley offered no space for the conventional arrangement.

Pisa Cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale di Santa Maria Assunta; Duomo di Pisa) is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, in the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, Italy. It is a notable example of Romanesque architecture, in particular the style known as Pisan Romanesque. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Pisa.

The original building plan was a Greek cross with a grand cupola at the crossing, but today the plan is a Latin cross with a central nave flanked by two side aisles on each side, with the apse and transepts having three naves. The inside offers a spatial effect similar to that of the great mosques thanks to the use of raised lancet arches, the alternating layers of black and white marble, and the elliptical dome, inspired by the Moors. The presence of two raised matronea in the nave, with their solid, monolithic columns of granite, is a clear sign of Byzantine influence. Buscheto welcomed Islamic and Armenian influence.

The Cathedral Church of St Thomas of Canterbury known as Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral was built in 1180 and paid for my a local wealthy Norman merchant. It has a very interesting history. In 1449 the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors so the cathedral was closed for 58 years and the people of Portsmouth excommunicated! It reopened in 1508 when the excommunication was lifted. Queen Elizabeth 1st worshipped there. The remains of the sailors taken from the Tudor warship Mary Rose when she was lifted from the seabed just off Portsmouth are all in a tomb inside the cathedral.

The Cathedral is just a short walk from the closest beach at the Hot Walls. This photo was taken with my Samsung phone camera

480 Brunt Street is also known as the Red Hook Stores. It is a Civil War-era storehouse located in the Red Hook Waterfront Historic District in Brooklyn, New York City.

It is now a Fairway Market. The trolley cars link to Brooklyn's trolley car past where trolley lines dominated the landscape in the early part of the 20th century. They are worn by the elements and time and are beautiful examples of curated urban decay.

Andorra has more than 60 churches. All are here >> www.lutz-meyer.com/reise/0809and-churches.htm

Saturday 14th of August 2021 and a trip to the closest Cathedral to me in Portsmouth. Portsmouth Cathedral was built in 1180AD and paid for my a local wealthy Norman merchant. It has a very interesting history. In 1449AD the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors so the cathedral was closed for a time and the people of Portsmouth excommunicated! The Cathedral is just a short walk from the closest beach at the Hot Walls.

St. Mary’s Church is one of the oldest brick churches in the Lake Mälaren Valley and the oldest building in Sigtuna still in use. The church was built by the Dominican order as their convent church, and construction began in the 1230s. The church is built of brick in a transitional style, between Romanesque and Gothic.

The painted celing you see on this shot actually dates from the 1860's. It was painted by two artists Henry Styleman Le Strange who died in 1862 having only completed half the celing. The second part was completed by Thomas Gabier Parry (who is also known for his work at Gloucester Cathedral amongst others) at the request of the then Dean & Chapter..

Not many opportunities to take photos within such buildings, and quite late in the day so not too many folks around.
