The fact of the matter is that some people do not know the difference between burglary and robbery, so today we will be comparing the two to clear things up. First, we will go over the definition of burglary.
Burglary is the the act of breaking and entering a dwelling at night to commit a felony (such as theft). A person commits burglary when he enters a building with the intent to commit a crime within. To show that a burglary occurred, a prosecutor must produce evidence on the following points, and convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt on each of them.
Robbery is the crime of taking or attempting to take anything of value by force, threat of force, or by putting the victim in fear. It can happen at any age, whether you are older and you have your car stolen, or whether you are 5 and you got your candy stolen, it is all robbery. You will not go to jail for stealing someone’s candy when you were a young child, but that doesn’t mean you didn’t get trouble! But, if you stole a car, you would definitely get in trouble.
Among the types of robbery are armed robbery, which involves the use of a weapon, and aggravated robbery, when someone brings with them a deadly weapon or something that appears to be a deadly weapon. Highway robbery or mugging takes place outside or in a public place such as a sidewalk, street, or parking lot. Carjacking is the act of stealing a car from a victim by force. Extortion is the threat to do something illegal, or the offer to not do something illegal, in the event that goods are not given, primarily using words instead of actions. All types of robberies are serious crimes.
While the 2 names often get confused with each other, they actually have different meanings (as described earlier in this blog) and should not be used interchangeably. Also, they have different legal consequences. Depending on the state where the crime is committed, the consequences given can vary. When it comes to fines, burglary fines can be extremely high. Again, this is depending on the state, but someone who is guilty of burglary can be expected to pay as much as $100,000 or more for a felony charge. Usually for a misdemeanor charge, the fines are less than $1000. Even if you break in to someone’s home and don’t take anything, a judge may still give you a restitution sentence. This basically means that the court can make you repay the victims of the crime to cover costs for losses and repairs.
As for robbery, it is almost always a felony, punishable by at least one year in prison, regardless of the value of the items taken. Most states punish aggravated robbery quite harshly, including armed robbery, carjacking, and home invasion robbery. Sentences of ten or 20 years in prison or more are common.
Of course, I’m sure you’re wondering what you can do to protect yourself from falling victim to these crimes. To start, you can install security and doorbell cameras. And always make sure you’re aware of your surroundings, especially when you’re walking to your car or house at night to prevent getting robbed.

Evidence is gathered in a suspects truck at a house on Bradley Street in Bristol, Va. on thursday. Several houses were broken into even with people in the houses.
"On April 24, 2025, at 11:25am the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) Communications Unit received a 9-1-1 call regarding a robbery that just occurred at Harmony House Jewellers, located on Main Street West in the Town of Grimsby. Uniform patrol officers assigned to 8 District (Grimsby / Lincoln / West Lincoln) were immediately dispatched and responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers learned 5 suspects arrived at the location inside a black Dodge Ram pickup truck that was intentionally reversed into the stores front window to gain access. The 4 passengers exited the truck and brandished hammers and axes and proceeded to break glass cases within the store to gain access to jewelry and watches. The driver of the pickup truck exited and proceeded across the street to an unoccupied parked white Honda CRV. This vehicle was used by all 5 suspects to flee the scene. As the suspects were attempting to drive off, a firearm was pointed at an individual attempting to stop the escape. The firearm is described as a black handgun with a narrow silver barrel.
Harmony House Jewellers was open at the time of the incident and occupied by several employees. Fortunately, none of the employees received any physical injuries as a result of this robbery.
Detectives assigned to the 8 District Criminal Investigative Branch (CIB) attended the scene and assumed carriage of the investigation. They are being supported by detectives assigned to the Forensic Services Unit (FSU). Investigation has since determined the Dodge Ram pickup truck was stolen in London, Ontario on January 10th, 2025, and the Honda CRV was stolen in Toronto, Ontario on April 23rd, 2025. The CRV used to flee the scene was located by the Hamilton Police Service on Baseline Road near the North Service Road, in the City of Hamilton a short time after the robbery. The vehicle was unoccupied. A witness has since come forward to report the suspects were observed exiting the CRV and entering an awaiting pickup truck.
All 5 suspects are described as adult men in their 20’s, with medium builds, and of average height. The ethnicity of one of the suspects is believed to be white. The ethnicity of the other four suspects is unknown at this time. All suspects wore dark colored clothing and concealed their identity with blue surgical style face masks. The items stolen and value of the items remains part of the ongoing investigation.
Detectives are aware of the videos and images that are circulating online. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or taken videos/pictures are strongly encouraged to contact the lead detective by dialing 905-688-4111, option 3, extension #1009383 or by email at 9383@niagarapolice.ca.

A new specialist team cracking down on robberies and key suspects across Manchester has secured five arrests in an overnight operation.
The team – working across one of the busiest and most diverse districts in the country – will be working to bring down robbery levels, strengthen investigative outcomes, and build greater public confidence through its sustained proactive work.
In recent weeks, the team has already begun to secure results as part of their goal, including last night’s arrests.
At around 7.30pm, officers from the team stopped a 24-year-old man in the Tib Street area.
Following a search, a mobile phone – suspected of being stolen – was recovered. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.
Officers then conducted a search of the suspect’s address in Withington, with a further quantity of suspected stolen goods recovered. This includes five high-value push bikes, 26 mobile phones, multiple tablet devices, laptops, watches, and designer clothing.
Around £15,000 in cash was additionally seized. The items will be assessed and analysed over the coming days.
As part of the work at the address, a further four men, aged between 19 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of offences including handling stolen goods, possession of criminal property, and money laundering.
Inspector Leon McLaughlin, from the newly created team, said: “This overnight work saw us achieve five arrests and seize tens of thousands of pounds worth of cash and suspected stolen goods.
“This shows how effective our proactive work can be – while it began with a stop-search, we are now launching a much wider-scale investigation into robbery and criminal goods offences.
“I have no doubt at all that we will continue to produce more successful results as the team continues to work with local neighbourhood teams ,
specialist resources, and response officers to secure arrests, charges, and more.”
Force lead for Robbery at Greater Manchester Police, Chief Superintendent Helen Critchley said: “Robbery is a crime that causes untold and lasting harm to its victims. In addition to the impact on the victims themselves these offences often happen in open and public spaces, and so affect feelings of safety in the local community.
“Within GMP, we are committed to the role of effective neighbourhood policing in providing public reassurance, preventing these offences and responding efficiently when they do.
“As part of the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee the force has invested in the creation of a new City of Manchester robbery team, who will be tackling all aspects of robbery, including knife-enabled robbery.
“These frontline officers will provide a visible deterrent, proactively target offenders and when offences do occur, they will provide a best standard of initial investigation to maximise opportunities to bring offenders to justice."
