The doors were closed on the car - I'm mystified how it happened - but happen it did. Bang went my bank cards, health cards, driving licence - and not forgetting my camera. Only notuced two hours later when we got home, Lloyd Spain knock off at 3pm on a Saturday in SPain so you cant report your card lost or stolen. All good fun! If you dont weaken.
The Postcard
A Brash Series postcard that was published by A. Denholm Brash, Bookseller and Artistic Stationer of the County Hotel Buildings and also at 92, Heaton Road, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
The card was posted in Bury on Thursday the 21st. September 1911 to:
Mrs. J. Shaw,

Tanners Street,
Ramsbottom.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

We shall come on Tuesday
if the weather is fair and we

look-out - you will think there
is a special trip from Bury.
It poured as we were going
to the station on Tuesday but
we caught the motor.
Love from Lena".

Fingerprint Evidence in Illinois
So what else happened on the day that Lena posted the card to Ethel?
Well, on the 21st. December 1911, the Illinois Supreme Court became the first in the United States to uphold the admissibility of fingerprint evidence, affirming the murder conviction of Thomas Jennings.
Jennings was hanged on the 16th. February 1912. By 1925, all state courts had followed the reasoning in People v. Jennings.
An Armed Robbery
Also on that day, the first armed robbery using a "getaway car" took place in Paris as four members of the Bonnot Gang used a stolen limousine to escape after robbing a courier who was bringing cash to the Société Générale Bank.
Octave Garnier and Raymond Callemin stepped from the vehicle and confronted the courier and his bodyguard with pistols. They shot him when he resisted, stole a case with money and hopped back in the car. Driver and gang leader Jules Bonnot then raced away.

A daring robbery of a city bookmaker's office at the hippodrome. Three young women in masks, threatening with weapons, took away the day's earnings. Although no one has been able to prove anything, there are persistent rumors that the photo, reconstructed from drawings from eyewitnesses, depicts the daughter of the governor of the Sunrise State, Charlotte, a student at Mary State College and the young wife of the prosecutor, Paola. All three women for the current year, 1952, categorically deny all accusations and consider them the machinations of the terrible Soviet intelligence! “Of course, these are Russians, you can expect anything from them!”
Years since the infamous bank robbery and shootout, traces still remain. North Hollywood, California.
Lorain is a city at its breaking point.
Yesterday was Lorain's 13th armed robbery in four weeks. And it was deadly.
Jose Gonzalez was killed at the Central Lorain grocery store he owned.
I didn't know Jose Gonzalez, but apparently a lot of people did and thought very highly of him. There are no shortage of testiments to him in the newspaper and blog coverage.
I have always been one to trumpet Lorain's many positive aspects -- a beautiful lakefront, historic lighthouse, wonderful cultural mix, hard-working people, slew of summer festivals. Yes, I've seen the bad, but I always thought if you just think positive and work hard and don't cause trouble you can have a great life in this city.
A living example of that philosophy was shot in cold blood yesterday.
Less than a week ago a coworker and I were discussing the recent problems in Lorain, and he asked me if I felt safe living there. I hesitated perhaps a little longer than usual, but I said yes.
Today, I'm not sure what my answer is. My heart aches for Lorain. Each of these crimes chips away a little more at my will to keep on keeping on believing in Lorain.

No cacti were hurt in the making of this photo. The Ocotillo limb grew that way, so I used it to put a lightweight purse on it.

Yotsuba's water gun antics have gotten some press attention... not the good kind. Seems like it's only a matter of time until Yotsuba's image graces the post office walls. Our girl's got some anger issues.
