Omis (Omiš) is well known for the Corsairs of Almissa (Pirates), whose Sagittas (ships) brought them fame because they were built for attack and fast retrieval into the mouth of the Cetina River, protecting the town from foreign invaders and even plundering the Venetian merchant ships en-route across the Adriatic. Omiš is situated some 25 km from the city of Split. Today, Omiš is a tourist destination, particularly for those who like active holidays (white-water rafting, canoeing and kayaking on the river Cetina).

GPS wildlife tracking is a process whereby biologists, scientific researchers or conservation agencies can remotely observe relatively fine-scale movement or migratory patterns in a free-ranging wild animal using the Global Positioning System and optional environmental sensors or automated data-retrieval technologies.

Richborough Castle contains the ruins of a Roman Saxon Shore fort, collectively known as Richborough Fort or Richborough Roman Fort. It situated in Richborough near Sandwich, Kent, in the United Kingdom.

Rutupiae or Portus Ritupis was founded by the Romans after their invasion of Britain in ad 43. Because of its position near the mouth of the Stour, Rutupiae was the major British port under the Romans and the starting point for their equivalent of Watling Street. Additional routes connected Durovernum (Canterbury) with further ports at Dubris (Dover), Lemanis (Lympne), and Regulbium (Reculver). Earth fortifications were first dug on the site in the 1st century, probably was as a storage depot and bridgehead for the Roman army. This transformed into a civilian and commercial town, which was later replaced by a Saxon Shore fort around the year 277. The later fort is believed to have been constructed by the rebel Carausius. The site is now under the care of English Heritage.

How good is the memory of a Northern Hawk Owl when it comes to retrieving its cache scattered over a wide area? I couldn't find a definitive answer. I saw the bird catching and caching three voles in one afternoon. I was curious to find out if I would see the cached voles a day later. The composite picture above is taken 24 hours apart. The one on the left shows the bird leaving its dead prey on the branch for caching and the second on the right was taken 24 hours later - the prey is still there and not consumed. If it's storing for long term then 24 hours is not enough for it to retrieve its cache. The other possibility is that the abundance of prey in the area doesn't require the bird to fall back to its cache. But, isn't that wasteful or attract other cache pilferers?

With the galaxy's growing love of the Galactic Asteroid Rally Circuit [GARC], the Space Police Land Division [SPLD] have taken to patrolling planets that the rally races take place above in hopes of catching a crashed racer and it's crew.

While not technically illegal, the GARC circuit is the most extreme and dangerous sport in the known galaxy. With over 1100 deaths in a period of ten years, the well loved sport is slowly creeping into the bad books of law enforcement groups.

I think GARC is a pretty legit theme, but is it really a legal sport? I decided that it's probably is frowned upon by law enforcement groups.

Seeing as I'm not very good at building space ships, I decided to make a land vehicle that could possibly hook into the fictional racing circuit.

Hope you don't mind TR!

Another test of the Neatimage anti-noise software. I'm a clutz, and would never clean a negative with anything other than compressed air and a swipe with an anti-static brush; will have to have Mr Socks go at it next time he's here.

The improvement is subtle (and partly comes from the increased sharpening/detail retrieval, not noise reduction) but if you compare some of the grey building facades with the original, you can see it's doing something.

My 1st take on the subject is here: www.flickr.com/photos/stevefretz/30945735623/in/dateposte... (and that page has a link back to Mr Sock's version, scanned with the Epson V600.

I used Nik Filters HDR2 and added a graduated neutral density filter from Nik Color Efex to distinguish this shot from the previous similar. The composition is slightly different too since iI include more of the sky and clouds.

In the 14th century the Crucifixion had been painted on one of the two wood surfaces of the sacred Byzantine icon that was kept for many centuries within the Assumption (aka Dormition of Virgin Mary) Old Cathedral in Kalampaka, Greece. The Assumption was painted later, in 1527, on the icon's other wood surface by the famous Cretan artist Theophanēs Strelitzas Bathas. The icon had been stolen and then its two sides were severed by illicit dealers in two separate icons; in 1992 both sides were retrieved. They have ever since remained safely kept in Meteora, but local tradition has it that the Crucifixion is always brought back to the Assumption Old Cathedral in Kalampaka for worshipping during the Third Sunday of Lent (Veneration of the Holy Cross).

The icon measures 82 × 60 cm. There is an inscription written with imperial red ink on the icon's lower part, stating it was donated by Ioannis Katakouzēnos, his wife Theodōra and their children

The shot of the sacred icon pictorially accompanies the Apolytikion sung on the Third Sunday of Lent (on March 19 for 2023): ❝︎Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries, and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross.❞︎

This is another image I have taken form my stock of RAWs for re-processing. I am trying to step-up my post processing a little and have even read some user manuals! I am happier with this than with previous versions of this image I have posted. I have managed to preserve the look I want in all areas of the image. This image was shot with a Samyang 85mm f/1.4 prime fitted on the excellent PENTAX K-1. The image was developed form RAW with DxO PhotoLab. Some stylisation was performed using ON1 Photo RAW (local exposure and dynamic contrast manipulation). Final edits to remove artefacts was performed using Affinity Photo.
