Exercise TRILLIUM RESPONSE is Joint Task Force Central’s annual field training exercise aimed at developing and maintaining the capability and expertise to conduct various operations in remote areas and extreme conditions. This year’s exercise focuses on a Defence of Canada scenario in a remote area of Northern Ontario.
The exercise provides challenging training to Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force personnel, allowing them to build winter field skills operating in harsh weather conditions.

On June 9, 2018 the 82nd Airborne Division conducted a Joint Forcible Entry training into Latvia with ten C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft, 642 paratroopers and heavy drop platforms.
Paratroopers departed from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on the morning of June 8 and flew over to Latvia with in-flight refuel over the Atlantic Ocean.
Exercise “Swift Response 2018” is an annual US Army Europe led multinational exercise being held in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
The C – 17 Globemaster III aircraft is the primary aircraft used for American airborne operations.

Exercise PRECISE RESPONSE, is an annual chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) exercise hosted by Defence Research and Development Canada at Canadian Forces Base Suffield where the Canadian Armed Forces along with NATO allies and partner Nations can practice essential CBRN defence skills in a multinational training environment.
LAREDO, TEXAS – A fast response by U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Zapata Station resulted in the shutdown of a stash house near San Ygnacio, Texas. This event occurred during the early afternoon of October 28, when agents acted on a report of suspicious activity near the Rio Grande River just south of the town. Within an hour of the report, the agents had followed foot sign to an abandoned residence on Ocampo Street. As agents approached the front of the house, several individuals ran out the back door only to encounter additional agents who had secured the perimeter of the residence. A total of 27 Mexican nationals illegally in the United States were taken into custody pending further investigation. At the time of their arrest, none of the individuals were wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). They were medically screened and processed accordingly. With a noted increase in COVID-19 infections among detainees, the smuggling and housing of large groups of individuals in stash houses and close quarters without PPE not only endangers the people being smuggled, but the safety of our nation. The Laredo Sector Border Patrol encourages members of our communities to take a stand against these risks of potential COVID-19 infection.

In response to a comment I made about the Nikon Nikkor S Auto 50mm f/1.4, I thought I'd take a walk through one of my favorite cemeteries. Maybe to choose my preferred resting plot.
I shot each scene at three apertures - f/1.4, f/2, and f/2.8. I've posted a few of these sequences here to illustrate how image rendering can change over these three aperture settings. While I think the differences are obvious, if you're not sure which is which, let me know.
My comment had been about the way this lens, the Nikkor S Auto, renders wide open. To me it has a number of qualities that I like in special purpose soft focus lenses. That is, images can be sharp with an overlay of spherical aberration that softens a scene behind the point of focus. I also observe that in-focus highlights can take on an interesting "glow."
So I thought I'd better get this project done and out of the way as I'm abot to enter a rather busy period of travel and the image making opportunities travel can bring. I'll be occupied for three full months before I can come back to my usual and customary boring existence where I'm looking for photo opportunities.

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – The Los Angeles District will be well prepared for its next disaster response with the recent acquisition of one of the Corps’ newest Emergency Command and Control Vehicles.
The ECCV, built on an International truck chassis, is a 47-foot vehicle designed to serve as a temporary mobile command post. It provides 11 work stations that each have a computer jack, 110- and 12-volt power sockets, and a phone that has cell, Voice over Internet Protocol and satellite capabilities. There is also onboard Wi-Fi capability to provide access for additional computers, and a rear compartment that houses a conference table, video camera and large screen TV for video conferencing.
“The old RRVs were extremely functional in their time,” said Alex Watt, referring to the 12-year old Response and Recovery Vehicle that served as the District’s previous emergency command vehicle. “But these are state-of-the-art. I’m so glad the Corps went this route with the truck chassis, because where we’re going is not just into town. We have to be able to get into and out of rough situations.”
Watt, a rehired annuitant and one of three District employees licensed to drive the ECCV, is a classic car enthusiast. He speaks that language when he describes the new vehicle’s capabilities.
“The old RRV was thirty-seven feet long and powered by a seven-and-a-half liter diesel engine,” Watt said. “It was similar to a roach-coach or UPS van. It was woefully underpowered for our needs and would have trouble getting over a two-by-four without a running start. This one is powered by an International six-cylinder, twelve-and-a-half liter twin turbo engine and an Allison six-speed automatic transmission. It’s the second-most powerful engine International makes.”
Sgt. Maj. Jeffery Koontz worked in the previous RRV when he deployed to hurricanes Rita and Katrina. He is another of the drivers qualified to operate the ECCV, and he echoed Watt’s comments.
“In comparison, the old vehicle couldn’t get out of its own way,” Koontz said. “The ease of setup with the new ECCV is a drastic improvement. The satellite uplink is fully operational in minutes, not to mention the operational staff reduction for the new equipment. You know, ‘Faster, smarter, better.’”
When compact and travelling, the ECCV sports a narrow interior hallway from front to back. When deployed and operational, the vehicle becomes an emergency response “Transformer,” extending leveling pads, four side-compartments, a satellite dish and radio antennas, emergency floodlights and, of course, the Corps flag. The process is a two-man (one outside for safety purposes), 15-minute evolution that allows responders near-immediate access to the equipment and capabilities necessary to conduct response and recovery operations in a disaster environment.
The vehicle has rearview and sideview cameras to eliminate blind spots, and a CB-radio to keep up with current traffic and weather conditions. In addition, a “trucker’s GPS” unit provides the driver with information about the height of upcoming underpasses, tunnels and bridges, weight capacities and curves, and other physical restrictions that could impact the vehicle’s ability to traverse roads and highways.
“I have been a driver for Emergency Operations since 2001, when the request went out for people who would like to drive the Emergency Response Vehicle,” Watt said. “As I love driving I immediately volunteered, and four of us went through a two-week training course learning to drive tractor trailers. EM is always looking for additional drivers and currently two other members of the ECCV team are working to obtain their commercial driving licenses.”
According to the Corps’ website, ECCVs provide an expedient tactical operations and communications platform for first responders where there are no available facilities or communications to support response operations. Each ECCV has onboard radio, interagency voice interoperability, satellite and cellular capabilities that deliver both voice and data communications. It is totally self-contained for up to 72 continuous hours with onboard fuel before additional fuel or alternative shore power is required.
The ECCV is about 13.5 feet high and 8.5 feet wide (about 15 feet with the side compartments extended) and weighs 44,000 pounds. A class 'B' Commercial Driver License with air brakes endorsement is required to drive the ECCV.
The Corps has 15 of the new ECCVs located across the continental United States. Mobile District maintains six, Sacramento District three, and Baltimore, Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, Nashville, Portland, Ore. and St. Louis districts one each.

The Tanzania National Government Pandemic Response Tabletop Exercise opened March 7, 2011, in Arusha, Tanzania.
The event convened with remarks from several guest speakers, who spoke on how imperative disaster preparedness and response is to the security of Tanzania.
During his welcoming remarks, Chief of Security Cooperation for the U.S. Embassy to Tanzania, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Kevin Balisky, discussed the critical importance of cooperation among national militaries and civil authority leaders, as well as international organizations, nongovernmental organizations and other civil society groups, all of whom must work together to mitigate and recover from pandemic disaster.
The exercise itself is an example of the power of collaboration. It is hosted by the government of Tanzania; organized by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), which is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany; supported by the Center for Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Medicine; and funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
In addition to representatives from all levels of the Tanzanian government, the five-day event brings together over 100 professionals from many diverse organizations such as the World Food Program, the National Disaster Operations Center in Kenya, the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria, the UN World Health and Food and Agriculture Organizations, the Ghana Ministry of Defense, and UNICEF. All will take part and contribute to the exercise.
“This exercise is designed to strengthen the government of Tanzania’s national preparedness and response plan, which will be the guiding document during a severe pandemic complex emergency,” Balisky said.
Among the first morning’s speakers, John Power, East Africa Regional Deputy Director for USAID, spoke of a “whole of government” approach to pandemic response.
At the end of 2008, using funds provided by the U.S. Congress, USAID signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to fund the Pandemic Response Program. The program established a close working relationship among USAID, AFRICOM and U.S. Pacific Command to enhance their foreign partner military capacity to respond to pandemics in these two geographic regions.
“What is different about this program is that the Pandemic Response Program, although implemented by the U.S. military, is structured more like a traditional USAID project with a focus on long-term sustainable results. It provides an excellent example of a new whole of government approach where you will begin to see much closer linkages between the efforts of American diplomats, military staff, and development professionals in selected countries, including Tanzania,” Power said.
“Our Pandemic Response Program will continue to have a regional focus to help improve the capacity for regional collaboration in the event of a complex humanitarian emergency,” said Brig. Gen. William Glasgow, Deputy Commander, Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa.
“Let us not forget that the 2009 H1-N1 outbreak highlighted the critical importance of a holistic approach required of government, civil society and the military to mitigate the effects of a complex humanitarian emergency like a severe pandemic outbreak; hence, the purpose of this exercise this week,” Glasgow said.
The role of AFRICOM’s Pandemic Response Program is to assist in strengthening African partner military nations capacity to respond to a pandemic in support of the national pandemic preparedness and response plan. To this end, AFRICOM’s overall objectives for the Pandemic Response Program are that senior- and mid-level military leaders are prepared to support their nation’s plan in disaster management and humanitarian assistance, with a particular focus on severe pandemics.
It is also AFRICOM’s goal that each military in USAID’s targeted pandemic preparedness countries have a developed, detailed contingency plan that directly supports the national preparedness response plans to an influenza pandemic disaster.
The conference’s first day ended with a visit to the Tanzanian National Food Reserve Agency in Arusha. The Pandemic Disaster Response conference will continue tomorrow with plenary talks, facilitated lectures and lessons-learned discussions. The tabletop exercise portion of the event will begin Wednesday and continue through Friday.

Exercise TRILLIUM RESPONSE is Joint Task Force Central’s annual field training exercise aimed at developing and maintaining the capability and expertise to conduct various operations in remote areas and extreme conditions. This year’s exercise focuses on a Defence of Canada scenario in a remote area of Northern Ontario.
The exercise provides challenging training to Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force personnel, allowing them to build winter field skills operating in harsh weather conditions.

L’exercice TRILLIUM RESPONSE est un exercice annuel en campagne de la Force opérationnelle interarmées (Centre) qui vise à développer et à assurer le maintien de la capacité et de l’expertise nécessaires pour mener des opérations variées dans des secteurs isolés dans des conditions difficiles. Cette année, l’exercice portera principalement sur un scénario de défense du Canada dans un secteur isolé du Nord de l’Ontario.
L’exercice offre à des membres de l’Armée canadienne et de l’Aviation royale canadienne une occasion de procéder à de l’entraînement exigeant. Ils peuvent ainsi remettre à jour et exercer leurs compétences de vie en campagne dans de difficiles conditions météorologiques.

Six people have been arrested and over £60,000 worth of assets seized as part of Operation Harness, a day of action targeting a suspected organised crime group (OCG) based in North Manchester.
Today, Thursday 19 March 2015, officers from Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) North Manchester Division executed seven warrants as part of Op Harness, a day of action carried out under the larger response to organised criminality, Programme Challenger Manchester.
Five of the warrants were executed in Clayton, one in Newton Heath and one in Blackpool.
Six people have now been arrested as a result of the warrants. They are as follows:
A 32-year-old man was arrested in Manchester on suspicion of money laundering and conspiracy to supply drugs.
A 30-year-old woman was arrested in Manchester on suspicion of money laundering.
A 37-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were arrested in Manchester on suspicion of possession with intent to supply drugs.
A 32-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were arrested in Blackpool on suspicion of possession with intent to supply drugs.
A Mercedes C63 AMG and a BMW X5 worth a combined total of approximately £60,000 have been seized, along with around £2500 in cash.
A large quantity of what is believed to be Class A drugs was recovered from an address in Blackpool as well as a quantity in Manchester.
Detective Inspector Liam Boden said: “Ridding our communities of organised crime remains one of our absolute top priorities.
“Today’s day of action is a continuance of the excellent work carried out as part of Programme Challenger Manchester, which has seen significant results since it began.
“A large amount of the intelligence that we have received leading up to this operation came from the public and I hope that this day of action will demonstrate just how seriously we take reports of this nature.
“I hope that the great relationship between ourselves and the communities of North Manchester will long continue.”

1:76 scale (OO Gauge) Ford Galaxy by Oxford Diecast. This was bought some time ago to become SP59EFO, a TayPol Firearms Unit. At the time I made a start by adding a lightbar, driver & passenger, blacking out the windows and adding the yellow dots. After which the model was put on a shelf and forgotten… until last week.
After applying the Battenburg livery, I cut thin slivers of a yellow square and applied each piece individually to the door frames. The first lightbar I had applied was completely wrong and was replaced with some scrap card. Likewise the ANPR camera is scrap plastic.
Whilst I have not changed the number plate (VRM), as above, this model is based on SP59 EFO. Callsign Oscar Mike Zero One (OM01), an Armed Response Unit, OM01 was a Force wide resource for Tayside Police based in Central Division (Dundee).
Despite the stereotypes about Firearms Officers (that they eat their crayons meant for filling in their paperwork, are short and muscular and a bit thick) my limited interactions were always positive. The one time I had cause to request urgent backup, the real OM01 was quickly at locus, as were Traffic and every nearby Divisional resource.
Today, April 15 2014, saw the passing out parade of Bolton’s first volunteer police cadets. The ceremony took place at Bolton Town Hall with guests including Sir Peter Fahy, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Jim Battle, Chief Superintendent Shaun Donnellan - Bolton’s police commander and Cllr Colin Shaw and his wife, Dee, the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton.
In 2012, Sir Peter Fahy pledged to create a new Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme for young people in the region.
The scheme, developed by Sergeant Jane Butler and Youth Strategy Officer PC Andrew Marsden, is aimed at 13- 17 year-olds and provides a programme of weekly Cadet nights filled with activity, information and – hopefully – some fun.
The aims of the scheme include:
•Promoting and encouraging a practical interest in policing among young people,
•Providing training which will encourage positive leadership within communities which will include volunteering opportunities,
•Encouraging a spirit of adventure and developing qualities of leadership and good citizenship. Cadets will be given the opportunity to obtain a Duke of Edinburgh Award, First Aid qualification etc.
Cadets units will be based in areas where there is currently little to occupy local youngsters.
Volunteers will have to apply, stating their reasons for wanting to be part of the scheme and will be encouraged to remain with the scheme for as long as they can. On reaching the end of their time as a cadet, they will be given with advice on careers and business, help with CVs and information about any opportunities to remain with the Force.
The first cadet scheme has been developed with the support of the Co-op Academy, Blackley.
Cadets are currently completing a "probationary" period and have so far experienced drill, physical exercise classes and advice on subjects such as the effective and safe use of social media.
Further items on the curriculum are lessons on the law, public order awareness, phonetics and radio use, problem solving … and more drill!
A uniform will be worn but only issued on completion of a successful probationary period.
The scheme's team leaders are also volunteers and include schools based officers, PCSO's, special constables and university students, all contributing their own time to run each cadet night.

Soldiers participating in Immediate Response15 move out to the exercise area. Immediate Response 15 is a multinational, brigade-level exercise utilizing computer-assisted simulations and field training exercises in Croatia and Slovenia. The exercises and simulations are built upon a scenario designed to enhance regional stability, strengthen partner capacity and improve interoperability between partner nations. The exercise will run Sept. 9-22, 2015, and will include more than 1,400 soldiers from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Immediate Response 15 supports the goal of a “Strong Europe” in that partner nations are trained and ready to combine forces to ensure unified security across allied nations. Immediate Response is a preplanned exercise that has occurred annually for the past five years.
