Comment by Philip McMaster:

People favourably respond to Change

Generally speaking, people don't change for the better when criticized. But they do respond favourably to praise.

Huaxi Cun is not the worst place in China, and it has been following and sometimes leading the objectives and trends of the government and Chinese people - first it was to get rich - and clean up the mess later. We did this in the West on our own schedule, some Chinese are doing it now under the generally hypocritical pressure of the global community.

An aspirational monument - if you choose to see it that way..

When I was invited to Huaxi Cun for the inauguration of the “Village in the Sky”, (www.tudou.com/programs/view/05XpJXkiNwI/ ) I spoke of the new tower as a beacon for all to see, not in terms of opulence and excess, but as a towering 3 element "Symbol of Sustainability" - an aspirational symbol rising above all else - including the cookie-cutter villas, the grubby factories, the money focus and the faux world landmarks - to shock and awe viewers into realizing that all monuments have a message – and this one should inspire people to make the connection between Heaven, Earth and the People (Tian, Di, Ren 天地人) and that to achieve Wu Renbao’s “Heaven on Earth”… the Triple-Bottom-Line balance between Society, Environment and Economy (社会,环境,经济)must become Huaxi’s new ethic.

"Now that Huaxi village is rich, what's next?"

Following my presentation, the new building’s architect Ma Xusheng, in turn praised my interpretation of his building’s design, saying that no one had thought of it before, but that “with your new ‘Society, Environment, Economy ‘meaning attached, our building is even richer”.

At a private dinner with village leaders the evening before, I had shamelessly asked: “Now that Huaxi village is rich, what’s next?” – hoping to encourage them to expound on how they were going to share Huaxi’s wealth and expertise with other communities and to build sustainable enterprises based on a model ecological civilisation… however the response was understandable, as a bit more thinking is required; and considering most people’s focus was still on showing off and celebrating what they have achieved so far, the answer was a simple “Gambei!”

A detail from Sir William Goscombe John's “The Response” at Barras Bridge, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, commemorating the Nortfhumberland Fusiliers . It is said to depict the scene in April 1915 when the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers marched from their camp in Gosforth Park, through Haymarket, and on to Central Station before embarking to fight on the Western Front. Soldiers march off to war watched by an angel while women and children bid them farewell. The memorial bears the inscription "Non Sibi Sed Patriae" (Not for Self but for Country). The memorial was commissioned by Sir George and Lady Renwick to commemorate three events: the raising of the Commercial Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers; the return of the five Renwick sons from the war; and Sir George Renwick's attainment of 50 years of commercial life on Newcastle Quayside. On St.George's Day the regiment wear a rose in their head-dress. The regimental badge shows St. George slaying the dragon.

Born in 1860, in Canton, near Cardiff, the son of a wood carver. Goscombe John worked alongside his father on carving and marquetry as part of the rebuilding of Cardiff Castle by William Burges. It was Burges who was said to have encouraged Goscombe John to study at the Cardiff School of Art. From 1881 to 1884 he studied clay-modeling under Jules Dalou at the Lambeth City and Guilds School of Art and then continued his studies at the Royal Academy Schools. He won a Royal Academy gold medal and traveling scholarship for “Parting”, a bronze group for Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and eventually took a studio in Paris where he worked from 1890 to 1891. At the Royal Academy Schools he had had the opportunity of working and studying under the likes of Frederic Leighton, Sir Thomas Brock and Sir Alfred Gilbert and in Paris was said to show the influence of Rodin who he had had the opportunity to watch at work.

DLECTRICITY 2012 Installation, Artist: NBNY.

Nuit Blanche New York (NBNY) presents a curated collaborative response by artists, writers, architects, and urbanists to the multitude of visions of the new city. Through a unique online visual platform, participants in New York and Detroit visually interpreted a glossary of writing about Detroit as a collage of moving images, photographs and illustrations. These works have been facilitated by NBNY using an innovative new tool, ToBe– a web-based interface that allows users to collage media in a canvas where they can draw and modify a shared palette of shifting content. Juxtaposing outsiders and locals, the project takes inspiration from How to Recuperate an Urban Crisis, Andrew Herscher’s important new glossary of urban figurations on Detroit. “ToBe Detroit” illustrates the complication and conflict of perception and offers a platform for visual dialog as a means to explore community across geographic boundaries.
