Mark Haney performing through the hour and a half right up to the second the sun set. Mark is the field house residency artist at Malaise Park as part of the Vancouver Parks and Recreation’s artist studio residencies program. We took in his magical performance with a small group while the crows came home overhead. His lyrical and looping performance finished the second the sun dropped beneath the horizon – albeit behind the clouds – and the rain started minutes later.

Mark used digital looping heavily in this performance to great effect and hence I really like my use of the layered images here.

Medical education in Cuba.

The full six-year medical education for Cubans studying to become general physicians is free. The first five years are spent in a combination of classroom and clinical learning modules; the sixth year is an internship. After obtaining their MD, with few exceptions, graduates are required to complete a two-year residency program in family medicine. From that point forward, they may apply to a residency program in a second specialty. The number of slots is determined by need, and the residencies are awarded according to performance and academic record. These programs are also free of charge.

According to the World Health Organization, Cuba provides a doctor for every 170 residents, and has the second highest doctor-to-patient ratio in the world after Italy. Medical professionals are not paid high salaries by international standards. A doctor’s salary in the late 1990s was equivalent to about US$15–20 per month in purchasing power. Therefore, some prefer to work in different occupations, for example in the lucrative tourist industry where earnings can be much higher

There are now 23 medical schools in Cuba, up from only 3 in 1959 before the Cuban Revolution.

The problem with health care therefore is not the shortage of doctors, but rather the rundown hospitals and lack of modern equipment - that is post 50's vintage. If you are interested in seeing what one Canadian (Thunder Bay) Volunteer organization is doing about it - Google "MEMO:Cuba". MEMO is an acronym for "Medical Equipment Modernization Opportunity".

Now the Montalvo Art Center, and originally Villa Montalvo, this Mediterranean-style villa in Saratoga belonged to James Duval Phelan. He loved inviting artists over to stay and work here. Montalvo now has a residency program.. One day, I would love to do a Residency here and sketch every little nook and cranny of this fascinating place!

I'd love to know what that large tree is... it's quite a tree!

Basics: Kalaeloa Safe House, Kalaeloa, Hawaii. The name means "Children of Promise." It was newly built in the vicinity of military barracks, on Hawaiian homestead land, and there is a big green fence around it. The boys are enrolled in a 6-8 months residency program. The House is run by Sterling, who received an undergraduate degree in Eastern Religions and Education, went to theology school at a Baptist Seminary in Louisville, before leaving Louisville to return to the islands. He felt that in Louisville or in the mainland states, you had to be male, white, and Judeo Christian to get ahead. Currently, there are 7 boys here -- ranging from 13 to 17 years old -- and 3 vacant beds. The majority are special ed and need more of a “hands on” learning experience. They have to be referred by probation officer.

Pictured: K.F, age 16, was referred by CWS. Her mother was incarcerated for drug charges -- there is a lot of meth addiction on the islands), and is now out of prison and in a “transitional setting.” When his mother came to the residential center to visit, she walked right past her son looking for him. Some of the kids don’t have families to go home to during the holidays. He has a grandmother but no father. He has been molested by the step-mother.

There are no visible electronics, but when users touch both the moon and a star (either alone or by holding hands with others) a tone is played.

CON- – -TACT is an improvised performance developed during the CINETic residency program, exploring the possibilities of remote contact. The internet fiber optic and submarine cables are part of the performance space, its digital acoustics’ glitches and delays are active parts of the improvisation. João Tragtenberg’s body is augmented by Giromin, a wearable sensor instrument that invokes sounds, visuals, and lights locally and remotely. In this performance he will improvise with Mitoș Micleușanu’s music and Saint Machine’s virtual and physical instances.
