Laughter and tears (of joy) predominated on March 21 at Match Day. More than 160 members of the 2014 Class of the University of Louisville School of Medicine learned where they will go for residency training after graduation in May. A key factor in determining the quality of a medical school, the match rate at UofL is 97 percent this year, meaning that 97 percent of the class matched to their preferred residency programs. The average match rate across the United States in 2013 was 93.4 percent.

Recently, Jorge began a residency program for plastic surgeons. Each year he accepts three people for the three year program, so there are nine residents at any given time. The residents train with him both in his private practice in Guayaquil and also on his frequent Rostros Felices trips across the country. Jorge made both experiences mandatory so the residents can gain medical experience as well as cultivate a sense of charity. Many of the residents come from wealthy backgrounds in leafy urban areas. For them, it can be easy to forget that there is immense poverty in much of Ecuador, so Jorge makes a point of instilling a sense of responsibility towards helping the poor.

Clemson University senior Mia Bowman, one of the first Clemson students to seek a Master’s degree through Clemson College of Education’s innovative Teacher Residency program, stands in a hallway at Riverside High School, Sept. 8, 2018. Teacher residencies are a research-based method to increase teacher retention and preparedness as well as student achievement. At the heart of Clemson’s residency program is the college’s combined degree option for undergraduate education students. This degree option replaces student teaching in a student’s final undergraduate semester with graduate education classes, and the following year is comprised of a year-round teacher residency. The residency program will see its graduates emerge after five years with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education as well as an extended, year-long student teaching experience.
