Elke 30 seconden sterft er een kind aan malaria. Daar moet wat aan gedaan worden. Op de Grote Markt in Groningen draaien Giel Beelen, Gerard Ekdom en Annemieke Schollaardt van 18 t/m 24 december 2009 een week lang plaatjes om geld op te halen voor het Rode Kruis. Dit doen de DJ's in het kader van 3FM Serious Request 2009.
when my customer requested me to do the carebear theme with all the different colours and each matching tummy design, i was petrified.. hahaha but after seeing the carebear's pictures I was excited and was game on with the challenged.. turned out was pretty fun to do these bears... they are just soo adorable.. and I did the theme as if they're playing in the cloud :)

TFS crews requested a 2nd alarm enroute after spotting heavy smoke from several blocks away. Station 114 crews, first on the scene found heavy fire on the first floor at the rear of this large residence. Several 38mm lines, and one 65mm line were stretched off P114 as crews attacked the blaze. The fire spread up into the 2nd floor and the eaves of the mansion as T114 also applied water to the roof. Crews were able to bring the fire under control before the residence was destroyed, although it suffered heavy damage to the rear.

We celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied and multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

This is Johann's magnet playground. For three years now this fridge has been part of his shante school - spelling, math, animals. Often when Tammy is cooking in the kitchen and he can't help he'll work on making up math problems or spelling new words.
Many of the magnets came from frdges before that...some came all the way with us from Idaho and are nearly as old as he is. And yes, this is pretty much how it looks almost all the time.

The nice lady driving her team wanted pictures of her pulling horses at the Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. I provided some contact information, but I'm afraid it didn't get to her. If anyone recognizes her, let her know these pictures are available to her.
Note to self: I need to do a better job getting contact information to people who want the pictures I shoot. Everyone seems to have a camera/phone nowadays, but people still appreciate good pictures when they actually see them.

De DJ's in het Glazen Huis in Heerlen zetten zich in december 2015 samen met Nederland in voor de generatie van de toekomst in oorlogs- en conflictgebieden: kinderen en jongeren die leven onder de meest extreme omstandigheden en daardoor weinig kans hebben op scholing en ontwikkeling. Zij zijn de stille slachtoffers van de oorlog. NPO 3FM geeft ze met Serious Request een stem. Paul Rabbering reisde naar Syrië, een land waar de oorlog een enorme impact heeft op het dagelijks leven.

Justin and Will from the BBT Yahoo Group wanted to see the records hanging in my basement, so I shot the picture in such a way, that you can see a small part of my record collection too.
Today's dedication is for Hopeisland, who requested, 'something pretty'.
I have lots of photos that could pass for pretty but that would've been too easy so I wanted to post one that also represented Hope...
I googled what colours stand for Hope...most sights stated green...some stated green or white...so when I saw this flower, I thought it ticked all the boxes...it's pretty, it's white and there's green!

Bridging the Gap
The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia sent a request to the Japanese Embassy to build a memorial in commemoration of the 2000th year on the Julian calendar by creating a cultural center that would bridge the two cultures. The site is located in Fassil Ggebbi, a world heritage site in the old imperial capital, Gondar. Our concept was to integrate the 2 cultures architecturally by relocating each countries traditional dwelling to its designated site. A new sense of space and value was created by relocating traditional Japanese dwelling that was no longer in use to an entirely new and social and cultural setting.
The Japanese Pavilion operates as a socio-cultural exchange center to home exhibitions and open markets for music, dancing, and other performing arts. On the other hand, the Ethiopian Pavilion operates as a gallery space as well as a water distribution depot for its neighborhood where rain water is collected and naturally purified. The water purification system is planned to be installed at a later date.
The structural frame used for the Japanese Pavilion was extracted from an old traditional dwelling from Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Under the supervision of Atelier Tekuto, the traditional dwelling was shipped and transported to the site, and rebuilt using traditional materials expect the structural frame and the shoji frame.
Similar to the traditional Japanese dwelling, the traditional circular Ethiopian dwelling was also abandoned and was transported and rebuilt on site using the skill and technologies available locally. The Glass Blocks, provided by Japan Electric Glass Co., are used as a medium to structurally to elevate the roof and to allow light to penetrate the gallery space.
Through re-locating tradition and architecture, the project attempts to create an entirely new approach in how architecture is perceived beyond global and regional limits.
The Two Traditional Dwellings
Besides the structural framework reused from each countries traditional dwelling, most of the materials to complete the project was obtained locally. Instead of using traditional Japanese paper for the shoji screens in the Japanese Culture Center, we used a type of thin clothe known for its distinct characteristic. Taking a look at local churches as an example to our design, we used a traditional method of bamboo bracing to construct the ceiling. The roof consists of a layer of zinc sheeting to protect its interior from leakage, and is coated with papyrus on its exterior.

Photographs in this collection have been produced by Alison Lowrie, Heather Do, Liz Dolinar, and Adriana Haro at request of Michael Ashley for the UC Berkeley Anthropology 136e class, Spring 2011. The purpose was to digitally document the cultural heritage of Green Gulch Zen Center with the objective of gaining better insight into the Zen Center's cultural history through the use of photographic technology.
Green Gulch Farm Zen Center (Latitude 37.86657, Longitude -122.56528), also referred to as the Green Dragon Temple, is located in Marin County, CA in a beautiful coastal valley overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Green Gulch, approximately a 10 mile drive north of San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, is located on 115 acres surrounded by hundreds of acres of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Green Gulch is a cultural heritage site constituting of one of the three centers that form the San Francisco Zen Center founded by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi [1]. In 1972, Green Gulch was purchased from George Wheelwright, co-founder of Polaroid, as a part of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi's vision to obtain a farm near the San Francisco Bay area where a community of Zen Buddhist practitioners could communally live and practice in accompany of one another [2] [3]. Part of the Wheelwright's stipulation of the sale to the San Francisco Zen Center was that the farm must forever remain open to the public, as well as partake in agricultural awareness [4]. Green Gulch now serves as a Buddhist practice center in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition, were their endeavor is to awaken the people residing, working, and visiting the center in the bodhisattva spirit-the spirit of kindness and realistic helpfulness [1]. Green Gulch is compromised of a temple (the Zendo), organic farm and garden, guesthouse, and conference center. The center offers training and practice in Zen mediation through workshops and retreats, as well as apprenticeships emphasizing meditation practice, Buddhist teachings, and organic gardening and farming methods [5].
Photographs in this collection were captured on Sunday April 24, 2011, between 11:30 AM and 2:15 PM Pacific Time, under sunny conditions. Nixon D80 and two-Canon XSI cameras were used. A tripod was used for HDR shots. The photos were post-processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.
