On April 17, 1945, in the final days of World War II, General Devers of the United States Army gave the order for the city to be attacked by artillery. The city was saved by John Jay McCloy, who asked permission to request the unconditional surrender of the city before the attack. McCloy's mother had visited Rothenburg before the war and told her of the town's medieval beauty, so McCloy was reluctant to destroy it. The German regional commander refused the offer, but Major Thömmes, commanding the German troops in the town, ignored this order and surrendered the town.

April 9th, 1985!

that's the day i was born and hence, i had a birthday on april 9th, 2009! AHHHH!

it was a fun day. though it ended with bloatedness after drinking a soy chai at a restaurant. it was the powder mix chai, which, from experience, tends to be laden with dairy... Oh NOES! . . .

in any case, it was still fun. a guy gave me a HUGE purple cellophane wrapped basket of homemade peanut butter cookies he made himself, pretty white roses, funny balloons, and a card about BOOTYBUTTS (the card i received at work was about a toilet and poo... ironic much?)! his mom got me a to-die-for gift card to starbuck's (i whole-heartedly support the local coffee and tea shops, but sometimes, they just aren't around when you need 'em the most!)

then he and i went out to breakfast/lunch/brunch/whatever you wanna call it at T.C. Eggington's. they have great vegetarian choices... "portobellini"... yum! on the way to breakfast, we saw a mother and her tiny baby ducks by the freeway in the puddle-y canal/gutter/whatever you wanna call that. it was cool because it was my birthday and they were cute, yet odd because it was by a freeway and not in a park, or in my school's irrigation or something. them duckies must be suffering economically too, eh?

so after that, i contemplated going back home to work on a commedia dell'arte mask for theatre class, but decided to just veg and hang with this guy at his apartment (i find vegging out, doing nothing a bit difficult to do sometimes).

later on, we met up with my parents to eat dinner at the Euro Cafe in Gilbert, AZ. a great foodsie greeky place. and that's where, you know, *ahem*... the soy-chai-laden-with-dairy-omg-why-did-i-order-this fiasco happened. so after dinner, with all of us feeling like cows (even though i hardly ate anything and they ate like contestants in a hotdog eating contest), we went to Wal-Mart of all places. i'm particularly NOT a Wal-Mart fan, but since i was at Wal-Mart and it might be cheaper than at other places, i bought vanilla soy ice cream because i was magnetized/hankering for some.

we finally headed home around 11pm, after which i quickly shoved this guy out the door and kissed him goodbye, so i could heat up some of those peanut butter cookies and WHAM BAM!... inhale hot cookies n' ice cream. mmmmmmmmmm... no cake this year. and i wanted it that way. no one even sang to me either i noticed, but that's perfectly ok. it's not a crime. wait wait...i take that back: he played the weird al birthday song... so essentially, i was sung to in mp3 format. :)

oh yeah, and at work today for my 'employee birthday'... i made up fruit, granola, & yogurt parfaits for everyone. someone bought all the ingredients (i requested it instead of birthday cake), and i went right to work -- whipping up those babies during my lunch break. i was so amazed some people didn't know what a parfait was or how to make them.

well, now they know :)

suffice to say, i'm on a parfait kick now. i hadn't had one in a year before that day. soy yogurt though. yes, please. :)

p.s. thanks dude for taking these kickity arse photos!

Thank you so much for the support and kindness....it's greatly appreciated!! Have a great rest of the week! 😊

Grandpops Woodlice, also known as Philip Male, wrote that he would prefer to see one yellow bead. (See his comments on the previous macro, if curious.) I'm not certain if that meant one yellow bead without the tiny 18mm glass container or cork top. Perhaps he is quite a minimalist, although perhaps not. That is a large bear he posted today.

Fiddled with this a tad in an old version of Photoshop.

Sammy belongs to my friend, Les. Mk1 used to belong to his Mum, who also used to belong to me, but I gave him away as I was living with a violent partner, and was worried Sammy would get hurt or worse, then it was my turn to leave.

Mk2 seemed to be a stray that decided she was adopting Les. Sammy is a funny one, apparently where she is sitting, is her favourite spot in the garden, next to the plant pots. 😊🐱

My son Antonio requested I take the photo, he adores cats and unfortunately because he is so allergic to them, we can't have one.

Apologies for the absence on here... I have just had a manic few weeks with work and family life and photography trips and something just had to give... This is the first in a series of Puffin shots from a trip to the Isle of May... I never feel I have much time there so this time I decided on just going to two locations on the Island and working each one for an hour... mainly shooting the Puffins! I tried for ages to get the perfect landings shot... one on its own landing but I never quite got what I wanted of a single backlit bird landing... but other shots like this more than make up for it! The 2.5hrs on the island passed as it always does in a flash!

Please refrain from posting shots, requests and Flickriver shots in my photo stream, thank you.

On Wednesday evenings I often get together with a friend with the intention of learning to sing and play guitars together.

He's on holiday this week and I'm not envious at all ... not one single bit .... well maybe just a little bit.

Well anyway, Tony, if you're reading this, which you almost certainly won't be because you're probably eating donuts and having way too much fun, but if by chance you are then practise, practise, PRACTISE !!!

As promised (to Tom) very early Thursday afternoon, two more Acorn woodpeckers upon request. This is a special pair. Normally, I can't tell a mated pair of these birds because they are not monogamous although they do only mate within the family. In order to become a member of an Acorn woodpecker family, you have to be ... hartched into it. Several generations are part of the family. For an outsider to be nominated, there usually has to be a death in the family. I don't know how the voting is accomplished, but I would imagine if the nominee shows up with three or more acorns, its got the insider track.

This is a pair: the male is on the left; female on the right. You can tell by the differences in the red crown.

The acorn woodpecker's habitat is forested areas with oaks in the coastal areas and foothills of Oregon, California, and the southwestern United States, south through Central America to Colombia. This species may occur at low elevations in the north of its range, but rarely below 1,000 m (3,300 ft) in Central America, and it breeds up to the timberline. Nests are excavated in a cavity in a dead tree or a dead part of a tree. Other characteristics are discussed in yesterday's upload.

One other thing that I always mention is that these "clowns" of the woodpecker species were the inspiration for Woody Woodpecker by cattroonist Walter Lantz in the 1930s. The call, a lioud ratcheting sound, HAD to be the model for Woody's call.

This was one of the earliest successful shots of this woodpecker, and one of the first bird images with the SX20 camera. Knowing the behavior and territory of a family ofhem is exceedingly useful in getting good images. For these two, I found the three main Valley oaks (out of as many as five), saw which was getting the most attention, and staked it out for the better part of two summers. With all that, I never saw where a nest was although I could guess by the activity around a hole in the trunk. Once the young are flying, they do not use the nest cavity again. They're too busy hoarding acorns. The branch of the tree that these two were on, collapsed under its own weight in May of 2011. It was estimated that 100,000 acorns had been hammered into that one branch. By the end of 2013, the whole tree had collapsed. flic.kr/p/23Xpdx4

Boss

This guy has been hanging around and he seems like a bit of an outcast as he is often alone and doesn't really have a mob to call his own.

He has let me get close to him to take photos even though I don't want to get too close just in case he decides he doesn't want to be friends.

Anyway the other day he did deiced to take back my friend request and as I went to take a photo he came at me.

I basically shit myself and ran back into the safety of the cat yard. I can take a hint.

Another shot of Beckley Point in Plymouth, taken on an evening out with Jay Stone.

Beckley Point is Plymouth's newest student accommodation tower block and at 23 floors it's the tallest building in the South West. A lot of local people think it looks ugly and is a blot on the landscape, but at night I think it looks pretty cool.

I do like doing night time photography, I don't do enough of it but I think we're quite limited in Plymouth. We don't have lots of lit up buildings and futuristic looking skyscrapers like they do in London, so once you've shot an area here at night there aren't really many options left.

As much as I appreciated comments and feedback I would request no Awards or flashy gif comments, please. They will be deleted. Thank you.

"The Car with a Conscience"

The Oakland Motor Car Company of Pontiac, Michigan, was an American automobile manufacturer and division of General Motors. Purchased by General Motors in 1909, the company continued to produce modestly priced automobiles until 1931 when the brand was dropped in favor of the division's Pontiac make.

The company was created by Edward Murphy who owned the Pontiac Buggy Company and Alanson Brush who was working as a consultant in Detroit after leaving the Cadillac Motor Company. Oakland Motor Company was named for Oakland County, Michigan, in which it was based.

After one year of production, Oakland's principal founder, Edward Murphy, sold half of the company to William C. Durant's General Motors Corporation in early 1909. When Murphy died in the summer of 1909, GM acquired the remaining rights to Oakland. Within General Motors, Oakland was later slotted as their entry-level brand below the more expensive Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac cars. Conventional four-cylinder engined models were introduced shortly after the GM takeover, and GM didn't acquire the volume-priced Chevrolet until 1917, and Oakland found itself competing with the Ford Model T introduced in October 1908. Once GM assumed operations of Oakland, production was moved to the factory that manufactured Cartercar in Pontiac, Michigan, another Durant acquisition that was cancelled while the resources were newly utilized, and the Oakland Model 40 was introduced. Starting with 1910 Oakland was exclusively offering 4-cylinder flathead engines with five different wheelbases and their advertising slogan was "The Car with a Conscience". By early 1920, however, production and quality control problems began to plague the division. In 1921, under new general manager Fred Hannum, a consistent production schedule was underway and the quality of the cars improved, and Oakland vehicles shared the GM A platform used by Chevrolet. One marketing tactic was the employment of a quick-drying bright blue automotive lacquer by Duco (a DuPont brand product), leading to the slogan "True Blue Oakland Six".

The Oakland was built only in Pontiac, Michigan, which is the county seat of Oakland County. The name antedates any GM association with an automobile manufacturing facility in Oakland, California, that built Chevrolet vehicles before Chevrolet joined GM called Oakland Assembly.

A long time Flickr friend asked for more postings of Tess and Nina - anything for a friend :)

These were taken on an afternoon walk when the ambient temperature, the humidity and the appearance of the always magical winter sun created a wonderful blue ice fog, a relatively rare occurrence that is very difficult to capture with a camera. Although these photos are no substitute for actually being there and experiencing this phenomenon ... at least they satisfy the request to see more of Tess and Nina. Cheers!

This is the first official photo of King Autumnus "Pepo" Cucurbita. It has always been the tradition that the first official image of the new king or queen of autumn is a painting but "Pepo" I. wants to be a modern king so he asked for a photograph, and who am I to refuse a king's request? For the photo, Pepo I. proudly wore his super comfortable, velvety-soft coronation mantle that was exclusively designed for him by Kale Lagerfeld.

Since Pepo is such a modern ornamental gourd, pardon, king, he also spends much of his free time searching the internet. Most recently, he developed a keen interest in body enhancements. As a first step, he requested a second eye. Born a cyclops (he's always been fine with it and it has never impaired him whatsoever), he for once wanted to have the "stereo view" experience "just like everybody else." So I made him a second eye from modeling clay, not expecting much of a "stereo view" experience for Pepo but he's delighted about it and keeps assuring me that he "sees like I have never seen before. By the way, Silke, when was the last time you dusted that corner, if I may ask?"

Originally, I wanted to use a tiny chestnut that I had picked up in front of my house (it's a tradition to pick one up and keep it as a good luck charm) but then I saw these small ornamental gourds at the supermarket the other day and took a closer look. One of the colourful little gourds had a tiny head with one "eye" and a huge pug nose and I kind of fell in love with it. Since there also was the first kale at the Whole Foods Market, an idea formed and I decided to stick to it and try to make it work: the birth and coronation of King Pepo I.

So the autumn traditions here are quite obvious: collecting leaves, and cooking with pumpkin and kale (the latter I didn't like too much as a child because back then it was the fashion to almost cook it to oblivion). Even the modeling clay eye represents a typical at-home autumn activity: crafting.

In-camera focus stacking yielded the best results, and combining the 15 ORF files in Helicon Focus yielded a better result than the in-camera stacked final JPG which had some artifacts. Illumination: natural light from above, yellowish light from the right, and indirect, reflected light from the left.

Size info: The width of the frame is a little less than 7 cm/2, 75 inches. I went as close as possible and measured the scene before taking the photo to make sure it didn't exceed our size limit. And you've seen the tiny crown before, it is 2 cm/0,78 inches "tall".

HMM, Everyone! (I will catch up with you a little later.)

An UFO-like water blob is hovering above the surface of a wavy landscape of unknown constitution.

Will it manage a safe landing?

Or will it be absorbed in one gulp by this strange and lively floor?

Nothing is certain...

REQUEST T A K I N G ~

Click below for detail <3

Alfred was one of the most popular men in town. The best stone mason had to work even on Sunday to finish everything on time. Orders were coming from everywhere - the king himself wanted an oversized bust. There was a request even from a land across the sea - a dragon statue. The most interesting job though was from a guy who said he saw his unborn son in a dream. According to the guy, his son's statue would turn to a live boy. He gave Alfred a detailed sketch and asked him to finish the job as soon as possible. The stone mason was baffled, but part of him was really intrigued, because of something he saw in the man's eyes. So Alfred spent almost all of his time working on that statue, leaving on a side all of his other projects. Now he was waiting for the guy...and for that miracle too.

I built this for Brickscalibur, Trading Places category.
